8/31/12 Fri pm Dow Closes at 13,090.84 up 90.13 or 0.69%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 13,090.84 up 90.13 or 0.69% from Thursday's close of 13,00.71.  For the week the Dow is down 67.13 or 0.05% from last Friday's close of 13,157.97.  Of the 30 Dow components 29 gained and only Merck declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM up $1.80 and percentage-wise was Intel up 2.31% The only decliner dollar-wise was  and percentage-wise was Merck down 1 cent or .02%.


As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of   Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.12914682. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.41 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 12.82); today's P/E estimate is 12.52 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.52 (year ago it was 11.23) and today's dividend yield is 2.64 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.62 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,690.63 up 11.64 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,678.99.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.12914682) you get the increase in today's Dow .Each dollar increase in the Dow increases the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 7.74.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.35 up 38 cents from Thursday's average closing price of $55.97. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.25 (HD/DD) up 15 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $53.10 (HD/DD). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,164 ($169,063 - $167,899).

MarketWatch.com Thurs. 4:13 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday notched a third month of gains that have largely priced in another round of easing by the Federal Reserve and policy action in Europe to address its debt crisis. The market drew "a lift today on further confirmation that [Fed Chairman Ben] Bernanke does have another round of QE in his back pocket," said Jeffrey Kleintop, chief market strategist at LPL Financial. After a 151-point climb, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.69% rose 90.13 points, or 0.7%, to 13,090.84, giving it a 0.6% August gain and a 0.5% decline on the week. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.51% climbed 7.10 points, or 0.5%, to 1,406.58, rising 2% for the month and down 0.3% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.60% advanced 18.25 points, or 0.6%, to 3,066.96, up 4.3% for the month and off 0.1% for the week.

Dow Jones Average:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 13,000.71 down 0.81 Wednesday's close of 13,107.48. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined.  For the year the Dow is up 6.41 %. he biggest decliner dollar-wise was  IBM down $1.71 and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down 1.88%.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,678.99 down   13.69 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,692.68.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

MarketWatch.com Thurs. 4:13 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. Thursday were hit by thinking the next European Central Bank meeting would not deliver the promised results and that the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole gathering could prove to be a nonevent."I suspect the market would be surprised if anything substantive came out of Jackson Hole: the big one now is next Thursday when ECB meets. We've been hearing a lot of chatter about how the ECB may not be in a position to do anything definitive next week, which puts the euro crisis back in focus," said John De Clue, global strategist for U.S. Bank Wealth Management.
