4/29/13 Mon American Express Holds Annual Meeting Today

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,163  The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 1, 2013 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 1, 2013.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business Daily, the Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,  Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. -  carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 14,712.55 up 11.75 or 0.08% from Thursday's close of 14,700.80. For the week the Dow was up 164.94 or 1.13% from last Friday's close of 14,547.61. For the year the Dow is up 12.27%. Of the Dow components 13 gained and 17 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron up $1.53 and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.94%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M down $1.09 and percentage-wise was Alcoa down 1.43%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks keep calm despite lackluster 1Q GDP report" by Paul Whitfield says stocks dug in against a disappointing GDP report & contained Friday's losses to minor levels.  Friday's action was mostly down in dwindling volume whle the current outlook is the market is still in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4  of  Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Monday's  trailing P/E ratio is 16.17 up from Friday's  P/E ratio of 16.16   (year ago it was 14.81); Monday's   P/E estimate is 13.15 up from Friday's  P/E estimate of 13.05 (year ago it was 12.42) and Monday's  dividend yield is 2.43 down from Friday's   dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.51). The Dow's all-time high was 14,865.14 on April 11, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,915.81 up 1.53 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,914.28. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $63.86 up 5 cents from Thursday's average of $63.81. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.67 (DIS/UNH) unchanged from Thursday's median closing price of $60.67. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $153 ($191,581 - $191,428).

4/26/13 Friday MarketWatch 4:28 by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Friday after a report showed the economy expanded at a slower pace than expected in the first quarter and a gauge of consumer sentiment fell in April. However, gains for Hewlett-Packard Co. and Chevron Corp. helped the Dow Jones Industrial Average finish in positive territory. The S&P 500 index SPX -0.18% fell 2.92 points, or 0.2%, to end at 1,582.24 after hitting an intraday low of 1,577.56. The benchmark snapped a five-session winning streak Friday, but it posted weekly gains of 1.7%. The technology and consumer staples sectors were the only gainers among the S&P 500’s 10 major industry groups, while materials was the worst performing sector. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite /quotes/zigman/12633936 COMP -0.33% dropped 10.72 points, or 0.3%, to end at 3,279.26, leaving it up 2.3% for the week. “What’s happening today is a little bit of jitters on the economic front and a little bit of jitters on the earnings front,” said Adam Sarhan, chief executive of Sarhan Capital. Investors are also growing more concerned over a steeper-than-expected downturn in Europe, he said. More than 681 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 3.1 billion. The Dow Jones Industrial AverageDJIA +0.08% rose 11.75 points, or 0.1%, to end at 14,712.55, leaving it up 1.1% for the week. Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +1.94% rose 1.9%, leading gainers in the 30-stock blue-chip index. Chevron Corp. CVX +1.29% was another gainer in the Dow, rising 1.3%. The oil major said its first-quarter earnings fell to $6.2 billion, or $3.18 per share, from $6.5 billion, or $3.27 a share, in the same period a year ago, but the results still exceeded analyst expectations. Alcoa Inc. AA -1.43% and United Technologies CorpUTX -1.04% were the biggest decliners in the Dow, dropping 1.4% and 1%, respectively. The Federal Reserve’s meeting on monetary policy, March employment data and Facebook’s earnings will keep investors and traders on their toes next week.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; & Sunday's & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

WSJ pB5 "US stocks trim their gains for the week" by Matt jarzemsky says stocks edged mostly lower Fri trimming their gains for the week as investors weighed anotehr round of corp earnings & a lower than expected reading on economic growth.  Chevron beat analysts' expectations.

Sat. NYT pB6 "Shares close mixed on tepid growth and earnings" by AP says the market stalled Fri as the US reported disappointing figures  for 1Q growth & a handful of big companies posted tepid earnings.

Sat. AJC pA10 "Economic growth disappoints" by AP says the stock market stalled Fri after the US economy didn't grow as much as hoped.

As of the close of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6  of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Friday's closing  trailing P/E ratio is 16.17 up from Friday's opening P/E ratio of 16.16   (year ago it was 14.81); Friday's closing  P/E estimate is 13.15 up from Friday's opening P/E estimate of 13.05 (year ago it was 12.42) and Friday's closing dividend yield is 2.43 down from Friday's opening    dividend yield of 2.44 (last year it was 2.51).
