3/31/14 Mon. 4:47   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says tThe U.S. stock market closed higher on Monday, while quarterly performance for the main indexes was mixed. The benchmark S&P 500 showed resilience this quarter despite geopolitical uncertainties and the curtailing of monetary stimulus.
On Monday, investors welcomed news that the European Central Bank may start quantitative easing to address the threat of deflation in the euro-zone. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s comments about the state of the economy and monetary policy propped up indexes further. In a speech to a Chicago community reinvestment conference on Monday, Yellen said that the recovery still feels like a recession to many Americans, which is why the central bank will keep its “extraordinary” support for the economy for “some time to come.”
The S&P 500 SPX +0.79%  ended the day 8.41 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,872.34, and recorded a 0.7% gain for the month. The benchmark index extended its quarterly winning streak, gaining 1.3% over the past three months.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.83%  jumped 134.60 points, or 0.8%, to 16,457.66 and is 0.8% higher on the month. However, the blue-chip index lost 0.7% over the past quarter.

“What is helping markets today is the news from Europe – it seems like the European Central Bank got an approval from the Bundesbank to initiate quantitative easing as they are at the threshold of slipping into deflation,” said Doug Cote, chief investment strategist at ING Investment Management.
“The U.S. is exporting QE across the pond even as it is ending it here. Hopes for monetary stimulus boosted stocks there and giving investors more confidence here,” Cote said.
In economic news, a gauge of Chicago-area businesses unexpectedly tumbled in March, hitting the lowest level since August, led by drops for new orders and employment, according to data released Monday.
However, markets shrugged off the report and looked ahead to manufacturing and employment data later this week.
The biggest data of the week will come on Friday, when the U.S. employment report for March is due. Economists are expecting a rebound in jobs growth after cold winter hindered hiring in the first two months of the year.
Cal-Maine Foods Inc. CALM -0.29%  shares jumped 9.2% after the company reported quarterly results. The food company said third-quarter sales and profit rose due to higher prices and continued growth in its specialty-egg business.
Micron Technology Inc. MU +7.99%  rallied 8% in the wake of a positive write-up from analysts at Stifel Nicolaus. Analyst Kevin Cassidy said in a note that he disagrees with the general bearish outlook on Micron shares and urged investors to build positions in the stock on weakness.

“Today’s economic data was as expected, but compared to the last few months there is an improvement, suggesting that the economy’s slowdown this year is weather-related and temporary,” said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones.
“This was enough good news for stocks to go higher this morning,” Warne added.
Consumer spending rose in February at the fastest rate since November as Americans spent more on health care and utilities, but in a negative sign, purchases of big-ticket items fell for the third straight month. Personal income also ticked up in February.
Next week will offer a barrage of economic data, which are expected to have less weather-related distortions and provide a better view of the economy.
Separately, consumer sentiment declined to a final March reading of 80 -- the lowest level since November -- from a final February level of 81.6, according to a Friday report on a gauge from the University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters. http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,617 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent  ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Monday's Barron's, Investor's Business, Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today,   Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16323.06 up 58.83 or 0.36%  from Thursday's close of 16264.23. For the week the Dow was up 20.29 or 0.12%  from last Friday's close of 16302.77.  For the year the Dow is down 1.5%. Of the Dow components  26  gained  and  4 declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise  was Exxon up $1.46  and percentage-wise was Microsoft up 2.39%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Visa down $3.68 or 1.71%.

IBD pB8 "Stocks lose early gains as buyers lack conviction" by Paul Whitfield says stocks staked out nice gains early Fri but the bears once again wrested away a large portion of the increase as Friday's action was up in declining vol & gives back most of gains.  the current outlook is the market is in correction.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at pageC4 Momday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.89 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 16.00  (last year it was 15.95).  Monday's P/E estimate is 14.74 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.85   (year ago it was 12.95) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.43 up  from Friday's dividend yield of 2.18   (last year it was 2.44). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2541.76  down 9.16  from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2532.60.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $84.73 down 31 cents  from Thursday's average closing price of $84.42.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.38  (DIS/PG) up 70 cents   from Thursday's median closing price of $78.68    (HD/PG). The lowest volume was 3M  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $916  ($254,176 - $253,260).

3/28/14 Fri. 7:18   pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says   the U.S. stock market pared most of its gains Friday after an early morning rally following generally positive consumer spending data petered out by mid-afternoon.
The Nasdaq Composite saw the worst week in 17 months, after a week-long selloff in biotechs dragged the index down.
The S&P 500 SPX +0.46%  ended the day 8.58 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,857.62, and recorded a 0.5% loss for the week. With only one trading session left this month, the benchmark index is set to finish March roughly where it started.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.36%  closed up 58.83 points at 16,323.06 and is 0.1% higher on the week.

Finish Line Inc. FINL +2.15%  rose 2.2% after the athletic-gear retailer reported its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings rose 25%.
Amazon.com Inc. AMZN -0.05%  shares gave up earlier gains and closed flat after reports that the company plans to offer free streaming television and music videos to its customers. The firm had previously planned to charge for the members-only service, reported The Wall Street Journal. Amazon has denied the reports.
Shares of Restoration Hardware Holdings Inc. RH +12.73%  jumped 13% after the high-end home furnishings retailer topped Wall Street estimates and issued a healthy outlook.
There were also a number of initial public offerings, with some more successful than others. CBS Outdoor Americas CBSO +5.36%  rose 5.4% on the first day of trading, but Everyday Health, Inc EVDY -3.57%   fell 3.6% on debut.

Elsewhere, Asian markets ended the week mostly higher , while the positive mood also helped lift European equities XX:SXXP +0.71% , with all major national benchmarks trading in positive territory. Gold prices were under pressure again, oil prices roseCLK4 +0.39% , while the dollar DXY +0.06%  moved slightly higher.
The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.11%  finished the day up 4.53 points, or 0.1%, at 4,155.76. The tech-heavy index is down 2.8% for the week, its worst performance since Oct 2012.

A preliminary March reading pegged the level at 79.9. Economists polled by MarketWatch had expected a final March level of 81. Economists watch sentiment levels to get a feeling for the direction of consumer spending.
Heavy losses among biotech stocks dragged the Nasdaq Composite down. The Nasdaq Biotechnology index fell 2.8%. Biogen Idec, Inc. BIIB -5.05%   and Gilead Sciences, Inc.GILD -4.01%   were among the top five losers on the S&P 500, falling 5% and 4.9% respectively.
In corporate news, BlackBerry Ltd. BBRY -7.07%  shares slumped 7% after reporting an adjusted per-share loss that was less than expected. The company said it anticipates maintaining a strong cash position and is targeting break-even cash-flow results by the end of fiscal 2015.
