Post No. 2,984 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 12/20.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Wednesday at 17823.07 down 160 or 0.89%  from Tuesday's close of 17983.07.  Of the Dow components 2  gained  and 28   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 70 cents or 0.67%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was Visa down $2.35 and percentage-wise was Cisco down 1.92%.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio was 16.88 down from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.93  (last year it was 17.07).  Wednesday's P/E estimate was 15.93 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 15.93 (year ago it was 15.25) and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.41 up from  Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.40  (last year it was 2.05). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2775.34 down 25.09  from  Tuesday's   numerator of 2800.25.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.51 down 83 cents from Tuesday's  average closing price of $93.34.  The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $92.75  (XOM/AXP) down 89 cents from Tuesday's median closing price of $93.64 (XOM/MCD). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $2,509 ($280,025 - $277,534).

12/31/14 Wed. 4:08 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis says U.S. stocks wrapped up a solid year on a down note, erasing early gains to end with sizable losses Wednesday. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.03% fell 21.45 points, or 1%, to finish 2014 at 2,058.90, according to early FactSet data. The benchmark gained 11.4% for the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.89% slid 160 points, or 0.9%, to end at 17,823.07, leaving the blue-chip gauge with a 7.5% rise for the year. Some market watchers said there was no single factor behind the stock market's choppy action on Wednesday, and investors shouldn't read that much into its moves on light, pre-holiday volume. But others suggested typical end-of-quarter action occurred, where portfolio managers bid up stocks in the morning, then ran out of money and walked away, leaving equities vulnerable for an afternoon fade.

IBD pB5 "Indexes end near lows; distribution tags Nasdaq" by Ken Shreve says major averages ended with moderate losses Tues. as the action was down in mixed trade and the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

NYT pB8 "Worries about Greece take a toll on the markets" by AP says lingering concern about the political future of Greece pushed stock amrkets   modestly lower on Tues.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2800.25 down 8.58  from  Monday's   numerator of 2808.84.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. 12/30/14 Tues. 4:35 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks closed with moderate losses Tuesday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average back below 18,000 for the first time in about a week. Energy-sector stocks were among the day’s worst performers even as the U.S. oil benchmark stabilized, however briefly, a little above recent lows. Adding to the negative tone, a consumer-confidence figure jumped less than expected. The S&P 500 SPX, -0.49% pulled back 10.22 points, or 0.5%, to finish at 2,080.35, a day after scoring its 53rd record close of the year. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.31% shed 55.16 points, or 0.3%, to 17,983.07, undercutting 18,000 after first clearing that mark on Dec. 23. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.61% lost 29.47 points, or 0.6%, to end at 4,777.44. All three main indexes endured their biggest drops in two weeks. The S&P is on pace for a yearly gain of 12.6% while the Dow is showing an 8.5% advance and the Nasdaq a 14.4% rise. Jeff Kravetz, regional investment director at U.S. Bank Wealth Management, said he didn’t see any major driver for Tuesday’s moderate drop. “It’s just normal volatility at the end of the year,” he told MarketWatch, adding that his team expects mid- or high-single digit percent gains for U.S. stocks in the new year. Trading was light on the second-to-last day of 2014, as many investors remain away on year-end breaks. The day was the 12th slowest day of the year, as measured by total composite volume. U.S. markets will be open for a full day on Wednesday.
Crude oil’s crash has spurred analysts to cut their earnings-per-share estimates for energy-sector companies, even as the slide helps consumers and other industries save money. Sam Stovall, U.S. equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, said in a note Tuesday that “sliding 2015 earnings estimates offer an additional concern,” but his shop still expects stocks will gain next year. He said “should this oppressive obsession with oil prove overdone, the EPS trend will likely reverse course, making our year-end 2015 S&P 500 price advance of 7% again more realistic.” Tuesday’s economic news: A key U.S. consumer confidence index climbed to 92.6 in December from a revised 91.0 in November, below a post-recession high of 94.1 set in October and under the 93.8 projected by economists polled by MarketWatch. The Case-Shiller home-price index indicated that prices declined for a second straight month. But after seasonal adjustments, prices among 20 cities rose 0.8% in October — the strongest result in seven months — compared with a 0.2% increase in September. CRT Capital Group’s Ian Lyngen in an email Tuesday described the housing report as “overall, a better-than-expected release.”  Movers and shakers: Southwestern Energy Co. SWN, -6.78% and another energy name, Range Resources Corp. RRC, -4.20% were the S&P 500’s two biggest losers, finishing down 6.8% and 4.2%, respectively. Southwestern said late Monday that it’s boosting its capital spending next year, while peers are cutting back as energy prices plunge. The U.S. oil benchmark rose Tuesday after showing a drop of 50% from its June 2014 peak, but the European crude benchmark fell again. Civeo Corp. CVEO, -52.60%  closed down a whopping 52.6% after the company, which provides accommodations for energy workers, warned late Monday of lower-than-expected revenue due to cutbacks by energy companies. Other markets: European equity markets finished with losses, as upcoming Greek snap elections brought back fears of Greece leaving the eurozone. Asian stocks closed mainly lower, with Japan’s Nikkei losing 1.6% on its last trading day of the year. The Japanese coalition government agreed to tax reform that will cut the country’s corporate tax rate in an effort to spur economic growth.  Gold prices rose, while the dollar softened DXY, -0.27% against most major currencies. The euro EURUSD, +0.02% was little changed against the dollar, trading around a more-than-two-year low following the renewed worries about Greece.

Post No. 2,983 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 12/20.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's  Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Tuesday at 17983.07 down 55.16 or 0.31%  from Monday's close of 18038.23. For the year the Dow is up 8.5%.  Of the Dow components 4  gained, American Express was unchanged  and 15   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was UnitedHealthcare up 52  cents or 0.51%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was and percentage-wise was Caterpillar down $1.12 or 1.2%.

WSJ pC4 "U.S. stocks fall; utilities lead decliners" by Saumya Vaishampayan, Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks fell but were on track to notch another year of gains fueled by a brightening economic outlook.  US stocks followed European & Asian stocks lower due to political turmoil in Greece.

A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.34 down 29 cents from Monday's  average closing price of $93.63.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.64  (XOM/MCD) down 35 cents from Monday's median closing price of $93.99 (CAT/AXP). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $859 ($280,084 - $280,025).
