Post No. 3,159 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 17840.52 down 195.01 or 1.08% from Wednesday's close of 18035.53.  Of the 30   Dow components  3  gained and  27   declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was American Express up 29 cents or 0.38%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Apple down $3.49 or 2.71%.

As of the open of  the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Thursday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.34 down from Wednesday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.41 (last year it was 16.17).  Thursday's P/E estimate is 16.30 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.70) and  Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.26 up from  Monday's dividend yield of  2.25 (last year it was 2.16). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2673.56 down 29.22 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2702.78.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.12 down 97 cents from Wednesday's closing average of $90.09.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87.13 (CAT/XOM) up 83  cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $87.68 (CAT/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,922  ($270,278 - $267,356).

4/30/15 Thurs. 4:50 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks limped out of April, managing to eke out marginal gains in the month after a sharp selloff Thursday.
Losses in the technology and biotechnology sectors led the main indexes lower, which came under severe selling pressure amid higher-than-usual volumes. The thumping stocks endured came as a number of economic releases and quarterly reports already had been shaking the market’s confidence, a day after the Federal Reserve left open the possibility of an interest rate hike as early as June.
Brian Fenske, head of sales trading at ITG, said Thursday’s trading action just reminds investors that the market can be tumultuous.“It is probably a combination of events and some earnings over the past few days that has sparked a selloff. Big moves in currency and commodity markets have played a role as did disappointing earnings from Yelp and Twitter,” Fenske offered. The S&P 500 SPX, -1.01%  lost 21.34 points, or 1%, to 2,085.51, but recorded a 0.9% gain over the month. Tech and health-care stocks were hit the hardest. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -1.08%  dropped 195.01 points, or 1.1%, to 17,840.52, leaving it with a gain of 0.4% over the month and flat year-to-date. During session lows, the blue-chip index briefly turned negative for the year. Taking the worst of the beaten Thursday was the Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.64% which sank 82.22 points, shaving 1.6%, to 4,941.42. The tech-heavy index gained 0.8% in April. The iShares Nasdaq Biotechnology index ETF IBB, -3.23%  dropped 3.2% and was down more than 8% from its peak reached last Thursday, driving the Nasdaq lower.Fenske took some comfort in the view that selling hasn't been frenetic. “This selling is not frenzied, it’s just a regular down day, which is normal in equity markets,” he added.Thursday’s economic data came in above expectations and pointed to improvement in the labor market and further inflation stabilization - both are key gauges of U.S.economic health that the central bank said it would use to help guide its hand as it aims to start normalizing interest rates.

4/29/15 Wed. am Merck's Rev Down 8% But Beats Views

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/
by Dan Kolber

Post No. 3,157 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Wednesday's   Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 18110.14 up 72.17 or 0.40%  from Monday's close of 18037.97. For the year the Dow is up 1.61%. Of the 30   Dow components 19   gained, American Express was unchanged and   10  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise  was IBM up $3.19 and percentage-wise was Merck up 5.04%.  The  biggest decliner dollar-wise  and percentage-wise was Apple down $2.09 or 1.58%.

WSJ pC4 "Profit reports offset biotech slide" by Corrie Driebusch says US stocks rose slightly  Tues. as a  round of upbeat quarterly earnings reports helped offset a continued decline in biotech stocks.  Merck raised its earnings guidance for the year as its 1Q results declined less than expected.

As of the open of  the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Wednesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.41 up from Tuesday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.39 (last year it was 16.13).  Wednesday's P/E estimate is 16.30 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.70) and  Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.25 down from  Monday's dividend yield of  2.25 (last year it was 2.16). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2713.97 up 10.82 from Monday's average numerator of 2703.15.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.47 up 36 cents from Monday's closing average of $90.11.  The median closing price of  Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $87 (CAT/XOM) up 83  cents from Monday's median closing price of $86.17 (CAT/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,082  ($271,3397 - $270,315).

4/28/15 Tues. 4:37 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks ended Tuesday’s choppy session mostly higher, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closing near record levels reached last week. However, disappointing earnings and weaker-than-expected economic data capped gains on the S&P 500 and Dow industrials, while Nasdaq finished slightly lower. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.28%  closed up 5.84 points, or 0.3%, at 2,114.76, with nine of its main sectors finishing higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.40% which had dropped by as much as 120 points in early trading in New York, finished with a gain of 72.17 points, or 0.4%, to 18,110.14. Meanwhile, the tech-laden Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.10%  ended the session 4.82 points, or 0.1%, lower at 5,055.42. James Abate, chief investment officer at Centre Funds, was concerned about markets’ march higher despite deteriorating fundamentals.“Recent economic data indicate contraction and a slowdown in growth. Meanwhile, earnings outlook is for zero growth. It is possible that investors are treating this as ‘bad news is good news’ assuming the Fed will not raise rates at all, given the economy is not doing as well as they hoped it would,” Abate said. “Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategists at CMC Markets, earlier blamed worse-than-expected earnings from companies such as Ford and Whirlpool on selling pressure, when Dow dropped more than 100 points at session lows.“It appears that consumers are not spending on big-ticket items, while confidence also dropped. In the next month or so, if we do not see improved economic numbers, markets might see a deeper correction, as a lot of investors had been expecting consumer spending to pick up,” Cieszynski said. The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting kicked off on Tuesday, but the interest-rate statement isn’t released until Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Investors will be looking for clues as to whether a near-term rate hike is still in play, although a large majority of Fed watchers don’t think the central bank will provide any hints, preferring to keep all options on the table. For the discussion on Wednesday, the FOMC will have the first-quarter GDP number to include in their assessment of the economy and interest rates.
