A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's and Investor's Business Daily and the combined Sat/Sun issues of the Wall St. Journal and Saturday's issues of New York Times and Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,977.57 down 2.73 or 0.02% from Thursday's close of 12,980.30. For the week the Dow is down 5.38 points or 0.04% from last Friday's close of 12,982.95. For the year the Dow is up 6.22%. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. Sat WSJ "Blue chip stocks close week treading in red" by Christian Berthelsen says stocks finished slightly lower with the Dow seeing their first weekly loss in 3 weeks despite closing above 13000 on Tues. without major economic data releases or corp news to provide direction, stocks drifted lower. Indexes fell on the open continued downward until mid afternoon on Fri, then recovered & peaked briefly into positive territory before falling. The Dow fell less than the other indexes primarily on the strength of IBM which rose $1.28. The move accounted for nearly 10 points in the Dow's performance. Blue chips were weighed down by American express which declined 58 cents.
Sat NYT pB6 "energy shares are lower in a down day on Wall St" by Reuters says stocks ended the day lower on Fri but the S&P and Nasdaq indexrd still closed with weekly gains for the 8th week out of the last nine. The decline hit enerhy shares sending the S&P energy sector index down 1.1%. Exxon declined 0.6%.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks mixed for week, but IBD 50 stays on top" by Paul Whitfield says stocks strayed lower Fri as volume fell on both major exchanges. The S&P lost 0.3% and the Nasdaq and NYSE were also down. The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B5 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.52 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.53 (year ago it was 14.89); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.67) and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.50 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.37). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,714.72 down 0.36 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,715.08. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.16 down $0.01 from Thursday's average closing price of $57.17. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.43 (DD/HD)up $0.0715 from Thursday's median closing price of $49.36. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $58.01 -0.41 0.7% 2,176,857 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.13 +0.01 0.12% 142,117,460 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $36 ($171,508 - $171,472).
MarketWatch Friday 3/2/12 4:10 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks and the dollar declined Friday, positioning the Dow Jones Industrial Average for its third weekly loss in nine weeks this year. Energy firms fell the most among the S&P 500 Index’s 10 major sectors as crude ended down for its first week in four. “Markets don’t move in a straight line, and obviously there’s a risk of a pullback here,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Off 0.1% from the week-ago close, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.02% fell 6.66 points, or 0.1%, to 12,973.64, with 15 of its 30 components in the red. Situated for a 0.3% weekly gain, the S&P 500 SPX -0.33% shed 4.50 points, or 0.3%, at 1,369.59, with energy firms hardest hit, a day after President Barack Obama called on Congress to end $4 billion in subsidies for oil and gasoline companies. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.43% declined 12.48 points, or 0.4%, to 2,976.47, a level that has it 0.4% up from last Friday’s close. For every share rising two fell on the New York Mercantile Exchange, where 460 million shares traded as of 3:20 p.m. Eastern.
Down 2.8% for the week, crude-oil futures CLJ2 -1.98% shed $2.14, or 2%, to settle at $106.70 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The drop came after Saudi Arabia denied a report of a pipeline explosion. The report by Iran’s state-run television on Thursday briefly pushed crude above $110 a barrel. The price of crude has climbed this year on worries that a standoff between Western countries and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program might spark conflict in the Persian Gulf region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected in Washington on Monday to talk about the issue. “Israel cares much more about Iran having a bomb than the price of oil, while the West and East have an overwhelming interest in keeping the flow of oil going,” said Kelly at J.P. Morgan Funds. The dollar DXY +0.81% rose against other global currencies including the euro EURUSD -0.81% and the yen USDJPY +0.74%. While equities’ near-stead rise has many analysts, including Kelly, saying a pullback, even short-term, was likely in store.
But investors should be cautious in banking on a market retreat, given any drops could be likened to “small waves in a rising tide,” Kelly said. From his perspective, the overall economic and market climate is only getting better, as evidenced by recent data that had U.S. auto sales in February rising to their highest level since before the recession and same-store sales up 6.4% at the 18 retail chains that reported February figures. “The main stories are in place, the U.S. economy is clearly improving here, with 15 million units in vehicle sales and strong chain-store sales,” said Kelly. “Consumer spending is coming back, and what that says is, consumer confidence is coming back. That also affects hiring, business and investor behavior,” he added.

Post No. 1,503 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,977.57 down 2.73 or 0.02% from Thursday's close of 12,980.30. For the week the Dow is down 5.38 points or 0.04% from last Friday's close of 12,982.95. Of the 30 Dow components 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise IBM $198.81 +1.28 0.65% 3,628,912 NYSE and percentage-wise was AT&T T $30.87 +0.24 0.78% 23,021,553 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $112.49 -0.90 0.79% 5,340,246 NYSE and percentage-wise was American Express AXP $52.99 -0.58 1.08% 4,634,164 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.53 up from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.49 (year ago it was 14.66); Friday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.67) and today's dividend yield is 2.50 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.51 (last year it was 2.41).

The following are excerpts from Friday morning's Blog.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,980.30 up 28.3 or 0.22% from Wednesday's close of 12,952.07. For the year the Dow is up 6.24%. Of the 30 Dow components 20 gained, Cisco was unchanged and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise IBM $197.51 +0.78 0.4% 3,261,641 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $21.5 +0.375 1.78% 44,525,099 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble PG $66.66 -0.96 1.42% 11,884,540 NYSE.
WSJ pC4 "Stocks hold ot close higher" by Chris Dieterich says stocks rose after firm readings from the labor market & retail sales but gave up gains late in the session after a report later denied of a pipeline explosion in Saudi Arabia. Fin'ls & materials were the best performing sectors in the S&P. JPMorgan added 1.13% and Bank of America rose 15 cents after the WSJ said it is working on changes that would require many users of checking accounts to pay a monthly fee.
Fin times p24 "Fin'ls lead the way as bullish S&P climbs to post-crisis peak" by Ajay Makan says US stocks survived a mid-afternoon oil price surge to finish the session at a post-fin'l crisis high, as Wall St's best start to a year in 2 decades continued to gather strength.
NYT pB6 "Fin'l rally sends shares higher" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced on Thurs sending the S&P to the highest level since '08 as fin'l shares rallied and gov data showed that initial jobless claims declined to a 4 year low.
USA Today p4B "Stocks up as fall in jobless claims indicates labor market is healing" by Bloomberg says stocks advanced Thurs sending the S&P idnex to the highest level since '08 as fin'l shares rallied & after gov data showed that jobless claims declined to a 4 year low.
Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks up in mild trade, but leaders find volume" by Paul Whitfield says stocks Thurs rebounded nicely though imperfectly from Wed's sell-off. Action was up in lower trade as the current outlook is still in a confirmed uptrend.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,715.08 up 7.30 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,707.78.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.17 up $0.24 from Wednesday's average closing price of $56.93. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.36 (DD/HD)up $0.15 from Wedneday's median closing price of $49.21. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.49 -0.11 0.13% 2,520,622 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $8.111 +0.141 1.77% 190,295,124 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $730 ($171,508 - $170,778).
MarketWatch Thursday 3/1/12 4:09 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed higher Thursday, after scaling back late in the session on reports of a blast destroying pipelines in Saudi Arabia that sent oil futures above $110 a barrel. "Every dip is being bought," said Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak. The price of oil rising "because of supply issues is a lot different than due to demand," said Boockvar. "The market doesn't care," he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.22% added 28.23 points, or 0.2%, to end at 12,980.30. The S&P 500 SPX +0.62% rose 8.41 points, or 0.6%, to 1,374.09. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.74% advanced 22.08 points, or 0.7%, to 2,988.97.

The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,715.08 up 7.30 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,707.78.

MarketWatch Wednesday 2/29/12 4:44 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks indexes fell modestly Wednesday in closing the books on strong February gains, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising for a fifth straight month. “A combination of good economic news and stimulus is all contributing to a good market,” said Mark Martiak, senior wealth strategist at Premier Financial Advisors in New York. “Europe is moving in the right direction too, although a lot of what is going on in the sovereign debt crisis is already priced into the market,” Martiak added. Up 2.5% for February and 6% year-to-date, the Dow DJI -0.41% shed 53.05 points, or 0.4%, to close at 12,952.07. The blue-chip index on Tuesday closed above 13,000 for the first time since May 2008. “The last time we were here, the valuation of the S&P 500 was 17 times, we currently have a 14 PE multiple,” Art Hogan, strategist at Lazard Capital Markets, said of price to earnings per share. “In a real sense, we’re much more fairly valued than the Dow 13,000 the last time we were here,” he added. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.47% declined 6.5 points, or 0.5%, to 1,365.68, a February rise of 4.1% and its third consecutive monthly gain, leaving it 8.6% higher from the end of 2011. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -0.67% declined 19.87 points, or 0.7%, to 2,966.89. The technology-laden Nasdaq rose 5.4% in February, its second straight monthly advance, which has it nearly 14% higher for 2012 so far, with Apple Inc. AAPL +0.01% in particular leading the climb.
“With tech, the risk-on trade is better than ever, especially when you look at Apple, which keeps breaking through to new historic highs. It’s such a bellwether for the sector,” said Premier Financial’s Martiak of the iPod maker, which had its market capitalization top $500 billion on Tuesday. On Wednesday, stocks reverted to losses, with the Dow clearing what had been a 50-point rise, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke curbed market expectations of more monetary easing in testifying before Congress. Gold futures GCJ2 -5.10% sank and the dollar DXY +0.73% rebounded after Bernanke didn’t deliver any hint that the Fed was thinking about further steps to bolster economic growth. “This must have been the best-kept secret in a long time: the market looking for an indication from Bernanke’s testimony that additional easing in the form of QE3 was on the way,” noted Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus, in emailed commentary. In his testimony, Bernanke said keeping monetary stimulus is warranted but climbing energy costs would likely hike inflation temporarily and that the decline in the nation’s jobless rate had been more rapid than expected. Ahead of the Fed chairman’s appearance, U.S. stocks had risen modestly, lifting the Nasdaq briefly above 3,000 for the first time since late 2000, after data showed the economy grew more than expected in the fourth quarter and as worries about Europe’s financial troubles ebbed. “It’s a move in the right direction,” said Lazard’s Hogan of the Commerce Department’s upward revision in gross domestic product, to 3% growth from an initial reading of 2.8%, for the final three months of 2011. While Dow 13,000 and Nasdaq 3,000 could be a boost to sentiment, Martiak said he’s watching for the S&P 500 to clear technical resistance at 1,400 to 1,425. “It took awhile to get to 13,000, so I think it will be a measured pace, but the S&P breaching 1,400 is a reasonable expectation sometime next month,” Martiak said. For every stock rising nearly two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 billion shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.4 billion. Oil futures CLJ2 +0.33% rose for their first session in three after the government reported U.S. stockpiles of crude climbed to a more-than-five-month high. The contract for April delivery closed 52 cents higher at $107.07 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. European banks and institutions took billions in loans from the European Central Bank under its long term refinancing operation. A major driver in the market stemmed from the ECB’s allocation of 529.5 billion euros ($713.4 billion) in its second auction of three-year loans to the banking sector. The amount was slightly higher than some analysts expected, but not so high that it stoked worries about stresses on the banks. “The ECB seems to have a real game plan here, the second tranche of the LTRO is right in line with credible expectations that should keep the liquidity crisis at bay,” said Hogan. Stock gains were supported after the open by a gauge of business activity in the Chicago area rising more than expected in February.
And, stock indexes were little moved by the afternoon release of the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, an anecdotal read of economic conditions across the country. The report found modest improvements in residential real estate and banking conditions.

Post No. 1,501 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' recent SEC filings.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,980.30 up 28.3 or 0.22% from Wednesday's close of 12,952.07.
As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.49 down from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.55 (year ago it was 14.65); Thursday's P/E estimate is 12.45 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.45 (year ago it was 12.67) and today's dividend yield is 2.51 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.50 (last year it was 2.41).
