Post No. 1,139 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investors Business Daily, each of the combined Sat/Sun issues of Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, and Saturday's & Sunday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,143.24 down 96.87 or 0.79% from Thursday's close of 12,240.11. For the week the Dow is down 538.62 or 4.25% from last Friday's close of 12,681.86. For the year the Dow is up 4.89%. Of the 30 Dow components only IBM gained, AT&T was unchanged and 28 declined. The only and therefore the biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM $181.85 +0.05 0.03% 6,665,564 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was ExxonMobil XOM $79.79 -1.67 2.05% 26,566,849 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $35.17 -1.06 2.93% 20,433,791 NYSE.

WSJ pB5 "Stocks add to their losses" by Steven Russolillo, Benjamin Levisohn says stocks fell for a 6th straight session & posted the biggest weekly fall in a year,k as a blur of debt ceiling developments left the market uncertain over the course of DC's deadlocked negotiations. Exxon is charted as it reported a jump in 2Q profit, but missed expectations & siad it would ramp up domestic spending to its highest level in 20 years.

Investors Business Daily pA1 "Stocks close sorry week on losing note" by Paul Whitfield says stocks fell Fri for a 5th straight day on the S&P 500 & a 6th decline in a row on the NYSE composite. The market was down in rising volume with the current outlook still is the market is in a correction.

Fin Times p11 "S&P 500 suffers worst weekly result in a year" by Micole Bullock says US equities fell this week, with the S&P 500 registering its worst weekly performance in a year & its biggest losing streak since '08, as investors weighed the likelihood that lawmakers can iron out a deal to avoid a US default.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.62 down from the prior day's trailing P/E ratio of 13.91 (year ago it was 14.18); Saturday's P/E estimate is 12.57 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 12.70), and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.49 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,604.48 down 12.80 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,617.28. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.48 down 0.43 from Thursday's average closing price of $53.91. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.25 (AXP/JPM) down 0.40 from Thursday's median closing price of $45.65. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $55.13 -0.37 0.67% 4,674,885 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.1 -0.08 0.82% 187,562,713 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,280 ($$161,728 - $160,448).

MarketWatch Friday 7/29/11 5:32 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks slid Friday, sending two major indexes to their worst week in more than a year, as Congress prolonged the uncertainty over the nation’s debt ceiling. “The debt issue is hurting the economy,” said Aaron Smith, senior economist at Moody’s Analytics. “Confidence is dissolving more rapidly than the data and markets would suggest.” Even as the debt-limit crisis dominates U.S. market attention, next week's news calendar is packed with major corporate earnings reports and key economic indicators. The White House said President Barack Obama would consider signing a short-term extension of the debt ceiling if it would give lawmakers time to complete a longer-term deal.
But spokesman Jay Carney said the administration still believes a deal can be done to raise the borrowing limit by Aug. 2.“I don’t think Tuesday is as big of a deal as say midmonth; interest payments are due on the 15th, so if we didn’t have a deal by then it could get ugly pretty fast,” added Smith at Moody’s Analytics. Recovering from a 156-point drop, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.79% ended down 96.87 points, or 0.8%, to 12,143.24. The blue-chip benchmark lost 4.2% from a week ago, its worst week in percentage terms since early July 2010. It’s fallen 2.2% for the month of July, its third straight monthly loss. The S&P 500 Index SPX -0.65% declined 8.39 points, or 0.7%, to 1,292.28, with a drop in energy and materials leading declines for all 10 industry groups. For the week, the index of large-cap U.S. companies has lost 3.9% — also its worst stretch in just over a year — and 2.2% for the month. Despite the ongoing nervousness over the debt negotiations, Mike Santoli and David Callaway argue that Treasurys are still some of the safest investments there are. The Nasdaq Composite Index ended down 9.87 points, or 0.4%, to 2,756.38. It’s lost 3.6% for the week and 0.6% for the month.
For every stock that rose about two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.2 billion shares traded hands. In the week ahead, “the debt-ceiling debate is issue number one, and then the attention will quickly shift to the jobs report on Friday, we’re thinking we’ll see some improvement,” said Smith at Moody’s Analytics of the nonfarm payrolls report for July. “The concerning thing is if we do get a weak number, the July numbers are going to predate the most intense debt-ceiling driven caution on the part of companies that we’ve seen,” said Smith of reluctance on the part of cash-flush corporate America to hire, given the shaky climate.
Given the July employment data is based on a survey conducted fairly early in the month and the debt-ceiling dysfunction has ramped up in the past seven to 10 days, the “uncertainty this is creating will be fully reflected in August (payrolls) number, particularly if we don’t get a quick resolution in the next week,” Smith said.Stock investors also wrestled with a new report showcasing slower growth for the U.S. economy. On Thursday, the Commerce Department said gross domestic product expanded at a 1.3% rate in the second quarter, below the 1.6% forecast by economists. Separately, the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan gauge of consumer sentiment fell in July to its lowest level since March 2009. The disappointing GDP report helped drive up Treasurys, as investors sought U.S. government debt as safe-havens — even as the prospect of a U.S. default loomed. Yields on benchmark 10-year Treasury notes tumbled 15 basis points to 2.8%. Yields move inversely to prices, and a basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.
Crude-oil futures fell $1.74 to end at $95.7 a barrel, while December gold futures gained $15 to finish at a record $1,631.20 an ounce. But stalled efforts to come to an agreement on hiking the nation’s debt ceiling overshadowed the day’s economic reports, with only four days to go before a threatened default according to a Treasury Department deadline. “We’re almost out of time,” said Obama in making another bid for compromise on the deficit and debt ceiling, arguing that while the House plan is moot and that both sides are not that far apart. On Capitol Hill, House Republicans planned a second attempt at passing Speaker John Boehner’s proposed debt legislation, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he had asked his minority counterpart Mitch McConnell to meet with him for a “good-faith” negotiation.

Post No. 1,138 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc.

Journal & Financial Times, and Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Post No. 1,137 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,143.24 down 96.87 or 0.79% from Thursday's close of 12,240.11. For the week the Dow is down 538.62 or 4.25% from last Friday's close of 12,681.86.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 13.91 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.08 (year ago it was 14.38); today's P/E estimate is 12.75 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 12.59), and today's dividend yield is 2.47 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.46 (last year it was 2.66).
