Post No. 1,131 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 12,501.3 down91.5 or 0.73% from Monday's close of 12,592.8. Of the 30 Dow components 6 gained and 24 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $36.39 -0.26 0.71% 9,886,655 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M MMM $89.93 -5.14 5.41% 11,431,925 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's closing trailing P/E ratio is 14.59 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 14.69 (year ago it was 14.65); today's P/E estimate is 12.75 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 12.59), and today's dividend yield is 2.40 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.38 (last year it was 2.64). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,651.78 down 2 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,663.88. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for Tuesday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in Tuesday's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.06 down 0.40 from Monday's average closing price of $55.46. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.51 (AXP/JPM) down 0.23 from Monday's median closing price of $46.74. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $56.8 +0.15 0.26% 3,243,292 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $10 -0.01 0.1% 120,980,742 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $37 ($167,550 - 165,178

MarketWatch Tuesday 7/26/11 5:30 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed near session lows Tuesday as the extended standoff in Washington over hiking the debt ceiling went unresolved. “Profits drive stock prices and profits are phenomenal, but it just seems that the private sector is in its own little oasis now,” Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank, said of Wall Street’s focus on what he called Washington‘s “ideological divide.“ In its third straight losing session, the Dow industrials fell 91.50 points, or 0.7%, to 12,501.30, with 24 of its 30 components declining. Losses were led by 3M Co., which fell 5.4%. The industrial giant said its quarterly results were dented by the disaster in Japan and declining demand for LCD televisions. The S&P 500 Index fell 5.49 points, or 0.4%, to 1,331.94, with industrials the hardest hit and technology up the most among its 10 industry groups. Falling the most among the index’s components, AK Steel Holding Corp. shares declined 17% after the company forecast a drop in third-quarter shipments due to higher costs for raw materials. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed gains by the close, edging down 2.84 points, or 0.1%, to 2,839.96. Treasury prices gained as expectations that U.S. lawmakers would agree to hike the U.S. debt ceiling and avoid a default heightened investor demand at Tuesday’s auction of $35 billion in two-year notes. Yields on the 10-year note, which move inversely to prices, fell 4 basis points to 2.96%. Equities displayed little reaction to a combination of improved consumer confidence and slightly lighter new-home sales data, with the focus remaining on the political stalemate that had President Barack Obama calling for a compromise on hiking the debt ceiling, with an Aug. 2 deadline just a week away. On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats labored to round up votes for dual debt proposals to avoid a potential default. “Each day they fail to come to an agreement is bringing in some nervous selling pressure. It’s very distracting for investors who don’t know how to position themselves,” said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald. “Earnings and the economy, that’s what I’d rather talk about, but we can’t focus on that with such an overwhelming negative out there,” he added. For every one stock rising, two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 837.2 million shares traded by the closing bell. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, gold futures ended at a record $1,616.80 an ounce, while crude futures rose to finish at $99.59 a barrel.

As of Monday, the index tallied a year-to-date gain of over 6%.
