Post No. 1,113 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of July 7, 2011.

Your Blogger is in Singapore lecturing, among other things, on the Dow Jones 30 Components at the Clean Technology World Asia Conference. I apologize for the sporadic postings through July 17 and lack of access to my usual print publications to which this Blog is dedicated.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,437.12 down 54.49 or 0.44% from Wednesday's close of 12,491.61. Of the 30 Dow components 7 gained and 23 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was McDonald's up 0.85 cents and percentage-wise was JPMorgan Chase up 1.84%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M down $1.21 or 1.27%.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,643.31 down 6.80 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,650.51. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.78 down 0.24 from Wednesday's average closing price of $55.02. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.87 (AXP/JPM) down 0.14 from Tuesday's median closing price of $46.01. The lowest volume was UTX United Technologies and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,720 ($165,051 - $163,331).

Thursday's Closing Dow Numbers:

The 8 companies whose stocks rose were Disney, GE, JPMorgan, Johnson & Johnson, Kraft, McDonald's and Merck.
