6/18 pm Dow rises 58.42 +69% to close @ 8555.6

Now, if you divide the Dow increase of 58.42 in the Dow numerator by the divisor you get 58.42, the increase in Thursday's Dow.

The average closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones was 37.73 up .26 from Wednesday's average closing price of $37.47. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones is $32.08.

The highest closing price Thursday again was IBM at IBM $106.33 -0.67 down 0.63% with volue 6,206,856 NYSE and the lowest closing price Thursday again was AA Alcoa at AA $10.78 -0.29 down 2.76% volume of 40,021,831.

The lowest volume Thursday was MMM $59.31 +0.27 up 0.46% volume of 3,194,453 NYSE and the highest volume was BAC Bank of America BAC $12.9 +0.60 + 4.88% at 340,028,904 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased $100 of each of the Dow 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $660 ($113,190 - $112,530).

A read of today's (Thursday 6/18/09) print editions of: Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, Investor's Business Daily, Financial Times and Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones 30 component companies:

Intel INTC leads the news with a story at pB5 of today's WSJ, Technology Section, saing that Intel is changing the branding on its computer chips, including phasing out the high-profile logo Centrino to identify a set of technologies in laptop computers.

Also @ pB5 of WSJ is a story entitled "AT&T Alters IPhone Policy" explaining that T AT&T will allow some current iPhone owners to upgrade to a new model at the same price as new buyers when it is released Friday. This info also appeared in a story in today's AJC @pA13. Today's NYT at pB1 has a story assessing the new iPhone 3G which will hit stores Fri. Walter S. Mossberg at WSJ pD1 has a story on the new iPhone. USA Tdoay at p3B has a similar story.

AJC's front page today has a story mentioning JPM JP Morgan and BAC Bank of Am. as two of the 10 big banks that will start to repay $70 billion of bailout money. At pB7 of today's NYT JPM is mentioned in an article related to this pay-back. At pC2 BAC Bank of Am. is said to be creating vehicles to repackage existing CMBS, commercial-mortgage-backed securities, with more protection to bondholders which will breathe life into the CMBS market.

WSJ @ pB5 has a story about Bing, the search engine that MSFT Microfsoft is heavily promoting with a $100 million advertising campaign noting that Bling helped MSFT notch a second straight week of gains in the online-search market, rising to 12.1% in the second week of June, up from an 8% share in May prior to Bling's release. A similar story is at pA2 and pA5 of todays Investor's Business Daily IBD.

Dis Walt Disney is mentioned at pB5 of today's WSJ in a story, "Asustek to Make Disney Netbook" that says Asustek is launching a Disney-branded netbook aimed at children. The $350 netbook will include Dis software featuring Dis characters. The Disney Netpal is designed for children 6 to 12 and will be in stores in late July. A similar story is at pA2 of todays Investor's Business Daily IBD.

WSJ at pC1 blames yesterday's Dow fall on BAC Bank of Am leading the decline by losing 3.4% and AXP Amex lost 3%. It says PFE Pfizer was the biggest percentage gainer, up 3%. WSJ's large stock focus column @ C6 says the MSFT Microsfot helped keep Nasdaq in the black yesterday. JPM is mentioned as falling 2.3% to 32.73 on news it was repaying back some TARP funds. PFE and MRK Merck were mentioned in an article on the market at p26 of today's Fin. Times FT saying PFE and MRK, rising 1.4% to 24.77, demonstrated a strong performance yesterday from drug makers.

The lead story in several of the papers was Obama's proposal for sweeping overhaul of financial rules which generally, according to the stories, will level the playing field for large banks currently under the microscope such as BAC Bank of Am.

WSJ at pC10 has a story entitled "Obama Rules Could Mean Shock for GE" saying that GE's lending arm, GE Capital, isn't a bank-holding company like JPM JPMorgan, for example, so, as a result, GE Capital, becasue of its size and reach, would likely be classified as systemically important thus facing a stricter regulatory regime.

IBD at pA2 says IBM will spend $100 mil over 5 years to develop new services for handhelds. Same page, IBD says BA Boeing finally joined the orders race on the third day of the Paris Air Show, securing 2 orders for jets valued at $153 mil.

IBD @ pA2 says JNJ Johnson & Johnson said it has joined the nonprofit Global Aliance for TB Drug Development to speed commercialization of its experimental tuberculosis drug - TMC207.
