Post #336. The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Towards the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 3/1/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's most recent SEC filings as of 3/1/10.

A read of Thursday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, The New York Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 10,567.33 up 2.95 or 0.03% from Monday's close of 10,564.38. Year to date the Dow is up 1.34%. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 15 gained and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $70.01 +2.22 3.27% 10,605,026 NYSE. WSJ pC1 "Dow's Climb In Two Days: 14.81 Points" by Peter A. McKay says a rally in financial stocks pushed the market to its second narrow gain in a row, with investors continuing to snap up Wall St. firms that are subject to heavy federal backing. Energy stocks benefited from a rally in crude, which closed at its highest level since 1/11 after new data from the gov showed a drop in gas inventories. ExxonMobil edged uo 0.7%.

WSJ pC5 "BofA, Boeing Climb; AIG Takes 11% Leap" by Donna Kardos yesalavich says stocks crept higher, led by the fin'l sector, with Bank of America, JPMorgan Cahse and AIG among the gainers. Boeing was the Dow's best performer adding to its gains Tues on expectations the firm will win a $35 bil contract from the Air Froce after Northrop Grumman dropped out.

Fin Times p24 "Retail banks in focus amid talk of Barclays interest" by Masa Serdarevic says US stocks posted decent gains Wed as they marked the 10 year anniversary of the Nasdaq's peak. However, following a series of rises over prior sessions, markets lacked a positive driver to send them higher.

NYT pB9 "Market Rises on Sense that Worst is Behind Big Fin'ls" by Javier C. Hernandez says a renewed sense that Wall St's biggest fin'l firms has endured the worst of the economic downturn helped lead the stock market higher on Wed.

Inv. Bus Daily pA1 "Cips, Biotechs Boost nasdaq To Fifth Straight Gain" by Alan R. Elliott says stocks marked anotehr day of modst gains in mixed trade Wed as the current outlook is the market is in a confirmed uptrend.

USA Today p4B "Economic reports help stocks creep up" by Bloomberg says US stocks rose for a second session Wed as a drop in wholesale inventories and improvement in corporate bond markets added to signs the economy is strengthening, overshadowing concern China will raise interest rates.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 16.48 up from Wednesday's P/E ratio of 16.47 (year ago it was 22.98) the P/E estimate is 13.45 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 13.45 (year ago it was 9.91) and the current dividend yield is 2.58 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.58 (it was 4.48 a year ago).

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1398.26 up 0.39 from Tuesday's closing Dow numerator of 1,397.87. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 0.39 for Wednesday by the divisor you get the increase in Wednesday's Dow close of 2.95. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.61 up 0.01 from Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing price of $46.60. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was 41.33 up 0.27 from Tuesday's median closing price of 41.06. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $81.56 -0.43 0.52% 3,574,860 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $17.11 +0.31 1.85% 221,765,263 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $26 ($139,826 -$139,800).

Market Watch by Peter McKay, Donna Kardos Yesalavich, Kristina Peterson, Kellie Geressy-Nilsen March 10, 2010, 4:34 p.m. --Financials lead market higher; regionals, AIG in focus -- U.S. stocks edged higher for a second straight session Wednesday thanks to a rally in the financial sector led by American International Group and Citigroup, which conducted a successful offering of $2 billion in securities. The deal heightened confidence that Wall Street is quickly putting the worst effects of the financial crisis behind it. In particular, investors have flocked over the past two sessions to some of the companies that still have heavy federal backing in hopes that the government will be able to unload its stake sooner than previously expected. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDU 10,567, +2.88, +0.03%) rose 2.95 points to 10,567.33. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,146, +5.17, +0.45%) rose 0.5% to 1145.61, led by a 1.1% gain in its financial category. AIG (AIG 36.12, -0.12, -0.33%) leapt 10.6%, and Citigroup (C 3.95, -0.01, -0.25%) was up 3.7% after a well-bid offering of trust preferred securities. Trust preferred securities possess characteristics of both equity and debt instruments, and are often sold by bank holding companies, falling in a capital basket, rather than being termed debt on a bank's balance sheet. Other advantages include early redemption by the issuer or a deferral of interest payments. Among the financial sector's other winners on Wednesday were Fannie Mae (FNM 1.09, -0.01, -0.91%) and Freddie Mac (FRE 1.30, -0.01, -0.76%) , which rose more than 2% each. Several regional bank stocks also rallied Wednesday, including Zions Bancorp (ZION 20.49, +1.23, +6.39%) , Regions Financial Corp. (RF 7.31, +0.02, +0.27%) and SunTrust Banks Inc.(STI 26.49, +0.64, +2.48%) , after a Wall Street Journal report said Barclays Capital (BCS 20.67, -0.01, -0.05%) (UK:BARC 347.85, +2.05, +0.59%) was hunting for a retail bank. Technology stocks also were a market leader Wednesday, helped by a 2.9% gain in bellwether Google Inc. (GOOG 576.45, +16.26, +2.90%) after the search giant said it will soon conclude negotiations with the Chinese government regarding censorship and monitoring of its Chinese sites. Wednesday also marked the 10-year anniversary of the peak of the dotcom bubble -- an episode from which the Nasdaq still hasn't recovered. The index is down 55% from its March 2000 high. Volume outside the financial sector was light as some traders paused ahead of next week's full calendar, including key reports on housing and inflation, as well as the Federal Reserve's interest-rate meeting and decision. Composite trading in New York Stock Exchange-listed names recently hit 5.6 billion shares, with much of the activity concentrated in just a few big-name financials. Among stocks to watch, Facet Biotech (FACT 27.01, +10.80, +66.65%) jumped 67% as Abbott Laboratories (ABT 55.03, +0.24, +0.44%) agreed to acquire the biotechnology company for $722 million. Facet shareholders will get $27 a share, two-thirds above the company's closing price Tuesday. Abbott rose 0.6%. American Eagle Outfitters (AEO 18.20, +1.05, +6.12%) rose 6.1% after the apparel retailer said it would shutter its 28-store Martin + Osa chain to focus on its namesake brands. In other markets, the dollar was weaker against the euro but strengthened against the yen. The broad Dow Jones-UBS Commodity Index slipped 0.2%, hurt by an $11 drop in gold to $1,111 per ounce. Nymex crude for April delivery gained 60 cents a barrel to $82.09. Treasury prices slipped, with the 10-year note off 6/32 to yield 3.723%.
