Post No. 597. The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 8/17/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 8/17/10.

A read of Friday's issues of Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,271.21 down 144.33 from Wednesday's close of 10,415.54. For the year the Dow is down 1.50%. Of the 30 Dow Companies: all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was 3M MMM $81.81 -1.80 2.15% 3,918,782 NYSE and percentage-wise was Intel INTC $18.9 -0.69 3.52% 158,947,515 NASDAQ-GS.

WSJ pC1 "Investors turn tail on stocks" by Jonathan Cheng says weak economic data hit the stocks of Alcoa and Ge and investors thought Intel's McAfee bid was a bit rich. Growth fears jumped back into the foreground Thurs, sending investors out of stocks and into safe haven assets. An unexpected surge in jobless claims and signs of slowing in the manufacturing sector eclipsed excitement over the latest corp acquisition news.

WSJ pC6 "FedEx declines 2.9%; Dollar Tree goes up" by Kristina Peterson says Intel and GE both weighed heavily on the Dow as US stocks skidded broadly Thur. Intel was the measure's worst performer, after it agreed to pay a heft premium for computer security software firm McAfee which is charted under Good News saying the $48 a share bid for McAfee by Intel is a 60% premium and a price last reached in '99. Intel fell 69 cents. Fin'l and materials slid as the economic data darkened prospects for a robust recovery. Alcoa fell 27 cents, 3M shed 1.80, Bank of America dropped 30 cents and JPMorgan dropped 82 cents.

NYT pB1 "Stocks fall on news of slowing recovery" by Christine Hauser says a slowdown in US manufacturing and weak employment data sent stocks lower on Thurs. as investors continued to absorb news of a weak economic recovery. The separate reports from the Fed Res and the Labor Dept were a fresh reminder of the slow pace of the recovery. Manufacturing, in particular, had shown tentative signs of a rebound in recent months. The reports were enough to reverse the upward trend of the previous 2 days, when the market rose 1.1%.

Fin Times p20 "Weake conomic figures oveshadow Intel McAfee deal" by Hannah Kuchler says US stocks fell Thurs after surprisingly weak manufacturing and jobless figures shook investor confidence, overshadowing a deal between Intel and McAfee.

USA Today p4B "Stocks smacked by rising jobless claims" by Bloomberg says stocks retreated Thurs, with benchmark indexes closing at the lowest in a month, as jobless claims increaed to the highest level since Nov.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 13.83 down from Thursday's 14.02 (year ago it was 15.09) the P/E estimate is 12.49 unchanged from Thursday's 12.49 (year ago it was 14.65) and the current dividend yield is 2.73 up from Thursday's 2.69 (it was 3.07 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,357.13 down 13.12 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,376.25. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 1.3 for Wednesay by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Wednesday's Dow of 9.69. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.24 down 0.61 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.88. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.02 down $0.78 from Wednesday's median price of $39.80. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $81.81 -1.80 2.15% 3,918,782 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $13.02 -0.30 2.25% 150,336,489 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,912 ($137,625 - 135,713).

MarketWatch 8/19/10 Thurs. 4:32 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended sharply lower Thursday as a gloomy jobs report and other downbeat reports put the U.S. economic recovery in doubt and overshadowed fresh merger and acquisition activity.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 10,271, -144.33, -1.39%) fell 144.33, or 1.4%, to end at 10271.2, with all 30 blue-chip components in the red for the day. The hit to Wall Street came as economic reports showed weekly jobless claims rising to a nine-month high. In addition, manufacturing in the Philadelphia region contracted and, the Conference Board said its index of leading economic indicators climbed just 0.1% in July, with the lackluster rise pointing to slowing growth. Intel (INTC 18.95, +0.05, +0.27%) led the declines in the Dow Industrials, falling 3.5% to 18.90 after announcing plans to acquire security software maker McAfee Inc. (MFE 46.97, -0.04, -0.09%) in the chipmaker's largest-ever deal. Intel is paying a roughly 60% premium over McAfee's closing price Wednesday. Journalists discuss this morning's disappointing jobs report and other developments that could impact today's market action. The S&P 500 Index /quotes/comstock/21z!i1:in\x (SPX 1,076, -18.53, -1.69%) fell 18.53 points, or 1.7%, to 1,075.63, with financials leading all sectors lower. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,179, -36.75, -1.66%) declined 36.75 points, or 1.66%, to 2,178.95. Losers outpaced advancers by a roughly 5-to-1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.07 billion shares traded. Composite volume hit 4.44 billion. Crude-oil futures retreated to end at $74.43 a barrel, and gold hit a seven-week high and closed at $1,235.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. See how dollar's rise dents gold's rally. On Wednesday, investors continued to pour resources into government bonds, as the government said it would sell $109 billion in debt next week.
