A read of Saturday's issues of Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, 9/13/10 issue of Barron's, Sat's issue of Atlanta Journal Constitution & 9/10 -9/16/10 issue of Atlanta Business Chronicle yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 10,462.77 up 47.53 or 0.46% from Thursday's close of 10,415.24. For the year the Dow is down 1.18%. For the week the Dow is up 14.84 or 0.14% from last Friday's Dow Close of 10,447.93. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 22 gained and 8 declined. WSJ pB2 "Chevron helps fuel Dow rise" by Donna Yesalavich says US stocks rose Fri, putting the market in positive territory for the 2nd week in a row. Energy firms including Chevron, Halliburton & Schlumberger led the climb, boosted by increased expectations for global oil demand.

Fin Times p14 "S&P 500 climbs but gains muted by low volumes" by Hannah Kuchler says US stocks edged higher after a sharp rise in wholesale invesntories boosted consumer discretionary stocks and the energy sector benefited from a higher oil price.

NYT pB7 "Shares edge up again as investors stay upbeat" by AP says stocks edged higher Fri, extending a rally that began nearly 2 weeks ago, as investors retained their newfound optimism about the economy.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.12 up from Friday's 14.09 (year ago it was 15.50) the P/E estimate is 12.53 up from Friday's 12.50 (year ago it was 15.35) and the current dividend yield is 2.69 down from Friday's 2.70 (it was 2.95 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,382.44 up 7.28 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,375.16. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 1.72 for Friday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in Friday's Dow of 28.23. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.08 up 0.33 from Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $45.75. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.07 (AXP/HPQ) up 0.28 from Thursday's Dow Jones median price of 40.35. If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $629 ($138,244 - $137,615 ).

MarketWatch 9/10/10 Friday 4:17 pm by Nick Godt Gibson says U.S. stocks upbeat reports from Japan and China helped lift hopes about the global economy.
