Post No. 689 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 9/12/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 9/12/10.

A read of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution, & Daily Report (Ga) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.

Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,143.69 up 80.91 or 0.73% from Friday's close of 11,062. For the year the Dow is up 6.86%. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 24 gained and 6 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $142.83 +1.77 1.25% 9,991,236 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $12.34 +0.36 3.01% 415,123,516 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $30.53 -0.17 0.55% 10,676,841 NYSE.

WSJ pC5 "Dow rises 80.91; Citigroup shines" by Donna Yesalavich says stocks closed higher as investors were encouraged by earnings from Citigroup & a measure of home builder confidence that topped expectations. IBM fell 5.23 after reproting that its signed service contracts fell 7% & Microsoft fell 59 cents on reports that its chief software architect is retiring.

Fin Times p26 "Citigroup earnings provide impetus for fin'l sector" by Hannah Kuchler says strong earnings from Citigroup helped to revive the fin'l sector which was battered last week by fears about the possible costs of the foreclosure crisis.

NYT pB9 "fin'l shares are higher on Citi's upbeat earnings" by Christine Hauser says fin'l stocks rose more than 2% after upbeat earnings from Citigroup, which also helped push the broad market higher.

USA Today p4B "Stocks celebrate good Citigroup news" by David Randall says upbeat news for banks and home builders pushed the stock market broadly higher Mon, extending its gains for the month.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 14.98 up from Monday's P/E ratio of 14.88 (year ago it was 16.21) the P/E estimate is 13.25 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 13.25 (year ago it was 16.02) and the current dividend yield is 2.53 down from yesterday's yield of 2.55 (it was 2.77 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,472.40 up 10.66 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,461.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.08 up 0.36 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $48.72. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $38.88 (AXP/JPM) up 0.68 from Friday's median price of $38.12. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $89.66 +0.52 0.58% 2,687,641 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.34 +0.36 3.01% 415,123,516 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,080 ($147,240 - $146,160).

MarketWatch 10/18/10 Monday 4:16 pm by Nick Godt says U.S. stocks rose on Monday, after results from Citigroup Inc. lifted the financial sector and signs of rising confidence among homebuilders.
