Post No. 821 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of January 10, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,671.88 up 34.43 points or 0.32% from Monday's close of 11,706.31. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 18 gained and 12 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $91.83 +1.42 1.57% 7,783,560 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $14.69 -0.29 2.01% 210,505,241 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Verizon VZ $35.36 -0.56 1.56% 43,261,761 Dual Listed.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal was 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.89 down from Friday's 14.91 (year ago it was 18.42); the P/E estimate is 13.55 down from Friday's 13.65 (year ago it was 13.75), and the dividend yield is 2.46 unchanged from Friday's 2.45 (last year it was 2.58). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,542.20 up 4.55 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,537.65. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.41 up $0.16 from Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $51.25. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.24 (HPQ/AXP) up $0.58 from Monday's median closing price of $44.66. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $87.74 +0.59 0.68% 3,024,265 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.69 -0.29 2.01% 210,505,241 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $545 ($154,765 - $154,220).

MarketWatch Tuesday 1/11/11 4:34 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended modestly higher Tuesday on earnings-related optimism and after Japan joined China in saying it plans to buy bonds issued by Europe’s financial aid fund. “We’re seeing modest improvement on Japan’s willingness to buy European debt. That’s good news, as somebody has got to buy it,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. “Near term, there was a lot of optimism going into this week and that may have been cause for things to have been overbought.” The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,672, +34.43, +0.30%) ended up 34.43 points, or 0.3%, at 11,671.88. Blue-chip gains were led by a 2% advance in shares of Bank of America Corp. (BAC 14.71, +0.03, +0.17%) and a 1.7% advance in shares of Intel Corp. (INTC 21.08, +0.03, +0.14%). The biggest daily losers among the blue chips were Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ 35.17, -0.19, -0.54%) and AT&T Inc. (T 27.95, +0.04, +0.14%) . Verizon Wireless made its anticipated announcement that it would begin selling a version of the iPhone 4 next month. Since being introduced in 2007, Apple Inc.’s (AAPL 341.84, +0.20, +0.06%) phone has only been available through AT&T’s network in the United States. “Sprint Nextel is the biggest loser; maybe it would be victimized on two of its competitors having the iPhone,” said Harris Bank’s Ablin in contrasting its performance to others in the sector. The S&P 500 Index (SPX 1,274, +4.73, +0.37%) gained 4.73 points, or 0.4%, to 1,274.48, with energy and materials gaining the most among its 10 industry groups and telecommunications faring the worst. The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,717, +9.03, +0.33%) advanced 9.03 points, or 0.3%, to 2,716.83. For every three stocks rising, two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 944 million shares traded. On Monday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.3% to its lowest level so far this year. Aluminum giant and Dow component Alcoa Inc. (AA 16.29, -0.04, -0.25%) late Monday reported fourth-quarter earnings that topped Wall Street’s expectations and offered an upbeat forecast. Read more about Alcoa’s results. Separately, retailers Sears Holdings Corp. (SHLD 74.51, -0.52, -0.69%) and Tiffany & Co. (TIF 60.56, -0.38, -0.62%) both projected that earnings would beat analysts’ forecasts. See story on Sears. “The earnings numbers that are out are OK, but it’s hard to draw major conclusions from the first handful of earnings reports. I’d like to see 150 rather than just the first four or five,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD 8.38, +0.02, +0.24%) slumped after the chip maker late Monday said that its chief executive has resigned, taking the industry by surprise. Read more about the move at AMD. European equities posted gains Tuesday, helped by Japan’s announcement that it will buy debt issued by the European Financial Stability Facility. The news eased near-term concerns over the euro-zone debt crisis, though Portugal faces a key test Wednesday when it will hold a government bond auction. After years of trailing their small and midsize brethren, the stocks of large companies look relatively inexpensive and ready to race ahead. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index (ST:STOXX600 281.98, +3.50, +1.26%) gained 1.3% and Portugal’s PSI 20 advanced 2.4%. In Asia, most markets ended higher, with the Hang Seng index (HK:HANGSENG 23,760, +233.08, +0.99%) in Hong Kong rising 1%. The dollar index (DXY 80.84, -0.04, -0.05%), used by Intercontinental Exchange to track the U.S. currency against those of half a dozen trading partners, held steady at 80.825. The following are excerpts from Tuesday morning's Blog.

Note to readers: This Blog is devoted to the Dow 30 and print financial media Therefore, when there is no print media delivered to me due to a snowstorm in Atlanta, there is no aggregation with the exception of MarketWatch Market Outlook. As soon as I can get out or the news delivery folks can get to me, I can just give market data. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Our usual read of the print editions of the: Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga)has been interrupted by the snowstorm so we do not have the usual stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Monday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 11,637.45 down 37.31 points or 0.32% from Friday's close of 11,674.76. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 11 gained and 19 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was 3M MMM $87.15 +0.92 1.07% 3,348,792 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was McDonald's MCD $73.56 -0.81 1.09% 11,189,227 and percentage-wise was AT&T T $28.34 -0.51 1.77% 40,233,903 NYSE.

The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,537.65 down 4.93 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,542.58.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.25 down $0.17 from Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $51.42. If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $493 ($154,258 - $153,765).

MarketWatch Monday 1/11/11 4:12 by Nick Godt says U.S. stocks finished mostly lower on Monday, as investors took a backseat ahead of the results of aluminum giant Alcoa Inc. after the close. AT&T (T 28.25, -0.09, -0.32%) led blue-chip declines, its shares falling 1.8%, while other telecom shares sank ahead of Verizon's (VZ 35.97, +0.05, +0.14%) expected launch of Apple's (AAPL 342.50, +0.05, +0.01%) iPhone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 11,637, -37.31, -0.32%) sank 37.31 points, or 0.3%, to 11,637.45, with Alcoa shares bucking the trend, up 0.4%.
