As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Today's trailing P/E ratio is 12.7 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.72 (year ago it was 14.42); Thursday's P/E estimate is 11.70 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 11.70 (year ago it was 13.25), and today's dividend yield is 2.69 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,520.10 down 9.57 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,529.67. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.67 down $0.32 from Tuesday's average closing price of $50.99. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.43 (DD/VZ)down 0.68 from Tuesday's median closing price of 41.11. If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $957 ($152,967).

MarketWatch Wednesday 10/19/11 5:13 pm by Wallace Witkowski & Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks fell Wednesday after indications showed the U.S. economy was growing at a weak pace and on disappointing earnings from Apple Inc., and as investors assessed European efforts to fix the region’s debt problems. The decline, which solidified in the latter part of the session, marks the ninth straight session the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.63% has closed in a different direction from the prior trading day. Joel Greenblatt, founder and value investor at Gotham Capital in New York, talks with Steve Eder about why investing in hedge funds is seen as a way to get "more bang for your buck." The Dow industrials ended down 72.43 points, or 0.6%, at 11,504.62, after rising nearly 57 points and falling as much as 108 points. The index had been higher before the Federal Reserve’s afternoon release of regional indicators, known as the Beige Book. The report said many districts saw “modest” to “slight” growth. “Contacts generally noted weaker or less certain outlooks for business conditions,” the report said. Investments recently sought as safe-haven assets, such as Treasurys and the U.S. dollar, pared losses after the report. The S&P 500 Index SPX -1.26% ended down 15.5 points, or 1.3%, to 1,209.88 points. It had risen as high as 1,229.64. Losses were led by declines in the metals and chemicals-heavy materials sector, followed by technology. Utilities was the only sector to gain. Other so-called defensive sectors, such as health care, also outperformed. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -2.01% slid 53.39 points, or 2.01%, at 2,604.04, weighed down by a 5.6% drop in the shares of Apple Inc. AAPL +0.30%. John Canally, an investment strategist at LPL Financial, said the market is still in a tug of war between economic data and earnings and the sovereign-debt crisis in Europe, with the continent exerting about 80% of the influence. Markets were sensitive to media reports on possible European efforts to leverage their bailout fund. French President Nicolas Sarkozy was expected to fly to Frankfurt Wednesday to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde and other officials ahead of a key summit meeting of euro-area leaders on Sunday, news reports said. Sarkozy told French lawmakers that a dispute over how to boost the firepower of the European Financial Stability Facility, the region’s bailout fund, had stalled talks, Reuters reported. Stocks had been bolstered late Tuesday after an article in U.K.’s Guardian newspaper late Tuesday said Germany and France had agreed on a plan to expand the bailout fund to 2 trillion euros, or $2.67 trillion. The article was later shot down by unnamed sources cited by Dow Jones Newswires. Canally said the S&P 500 should maintain its 1,225 level or trade higher if investors still believe progress is being made in Europe. E.U. leaders are expected to announce progress on the region’s debt crisis at a summit meeting this Sunday. He cautioned, however, that European leaders need to come up with a large-funded, specific plan or risk a flop much like Treasury Secretary’s Timothy Geithner’s much-criticized stability plan in February 2009. “This could end up being Europe’s Tim Geithner moment,” LPL’s Canally said. Analysts have noted that even disparate talk of a more powerful fix to the euro-zone crisis could provide a floor for stocks and investments that are closely correlated to equities. “We’re on pause as to what’s going to come from Europe,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC. “The market could drift higher in the absence of anything affirmative, but so far we’ve seen a lot of talk and no action, so we have to keep an eye toward disappointment.” Alcoa Inc. AA +1.54% and Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.16% led Dow decliners, falling more than 3%. On the positive side of the market, Travelers Cos. TRV -0.21% shares rallied 5.7%, leading the blue-chip gains, after the insurer’s earnings report included progress on raising prices — signaling the industry may be on the mend. Intel Corp. INTC +0.12% shares also provided support to the Dow, adding 3.6% after the semiconductor maker reported a 17% jump in quarterly earnings late Tuesday. Apple, a significant component of the Nasdaq, had its worst session since December 2008 after the consumer-electronics maker late Tuesday reported earnings that fell short of analysts’ estimates because of a surprise drop in iPhone sales from the June quarter. Morgan Stanley MS +0.06% pared earlier gains to close up 0.1%. The investment bank reported a jump in profit and a 46% surge in revenue. Accounting for changes in credit spreads boosted its bottom line, similar to other big banks this quarter. Stock futures had pared losses following before-the-bell economic releases on consumer prices and housing. Housing starts jumped 15% in September to a 17-month high, according to the Commerce Department. Increased demand for rental stock and rebuilding after Hurricane Irene supported new construction. The Labor Department also reported that consumer prices rose 0.3% in September.
