Post No. 1,361 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of December 1, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,997.7 down 198.68 or 1.63% from Wednesday's close of 12,196.37. Of the 30 Dow components 29 gained and only McDonalds declined. The only and biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was McDonald's MCD $96.92 +0.47 0.49% 8,119,272 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $191.58 2.47 1.27% 4,357,960 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $5.59 -0.30 5.09% 283,699,983 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.19 up from Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.14 (year ago it was 14.50); Thursday's P/E estimate is 12.35 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.35 (year ago it was 13.33), and today's dividend yield is 2.59 unchanged from Wednesday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.52). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,585.24 down 16.26 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,611.50. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.84 down 0.88 from Wednesday's average closing price of $53.72. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.22 (DD/HD down $1.19 from Wednesday's median closing price of $44.41. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $82.46 -1.93 2.34% 3,968,027 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC BAC $5.59 -0.30 5.09% 283,699,983 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,626 ($161,150 - $158,524).

MarketWatch Thursday 12/8/11 5:45 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks lost sizeable ground Thursday as public sparring among European Union members jolted the market late in the session. “There is such a thing as too much transparency, because there is too much posturing. This is very typical tactics, to leak out stuff about what you want to try to get the upper hand; unfortunately this is not stuff for such an important meeting,” said Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald.
The market came off its lows late in the session after Dow Jones reported details of a draft proposal at the EU summit. But then the indexes sank further, with the Dow average sinking as much as 230 points, after Reuters cited a senior German source in saying Germany opposed some measures in the draft conclusions. All eyes are now on a crucial meeting of European Union leaders in Brussels. EU leaders are under pressure from ratings agencies and bond investors to devise a comprehensive plan to rein in sovereign debts that have sent some countries to the brink of default. Germany’s Angela Merkel has supported a stronger fiscal union that could penalize members if they don’t abide by deficit limits; some EU members don’t want such changes. “It’s having a body that has authority to look at something versus the ability to sanction. Germany wants sanctions if you don’t meet the requirements of the EU committee,” Pado said. Down after a three-day rise, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 198.67 points, or 1.6%, to 11,997.70. The Standard & Poor’s 500 SPX -2.11% lost 26.66 points, or 2.1%, to 1,234.35, with financial companies taking the biggest hit among its 10 major industry groups. Among the top decliners on the S&P, Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. HIG +0.64% fell 8.2% after the insurer said it would look to cut additional costs due to the “fragile economic recovery.” Leading declines among banking shares, Morgan Stanley tumbled 8.4% and Citigroup Inc. lost 7%. Down for a third day, the Nasdaq Composite declined 52.83 points, or 2%, to 2,596.38. For every stock that gained half a dozen fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where just over 930 million shares traded. Composite volume neared 4.3 billion. “I don’t get the sense with this kind of volume that you have real institutions that are playing on a daily basis. You have traders looking for that headline, ready to hit the button at a moment’s notice,” said Pado. In Frankfurt, the ECB on Thursday cut interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point to 1% and said it would supply banks with unlimited cash for three years, but President Mario Draghi told reporters at a monthly news conference that he had not signaled the ECB would as a matter of course back additional purchases of the bonds of debt-strapped nations. “Did the market really think Mario Draghi was going to do QE I II III, just because the EU will have better budgetary control? Evidently it’s news to him. The market got hit hard as it was set up for some good news and every dip in the last week was bought,” wrote Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel Nicolaus. And the European Banking Authority said the aggregate capital shortfall for European banks amounted to 114.7 billion euros ($152.7 billion), with lenders looking at having to raise 8 billion euros more than previously estimated by the EBA in October. “Europe is fundamentally broken, so it’s hard for the world to gain confidence when we see a very duct-tape approach,” said Kevin Brungardt, chairperson of RoundPoint Financial Group. And, as has been the case of late, events in Europe drew the spotlight from positive news on the U.S. economy. Labor Department figures released Thursday had U.S. jobless claims falling by 23,000 to 381,000 last week. Read more on jobless claims. “We continue to make progress, but that’s overshadowed by what is happening in Europe,” said Brungardt, who added the U.S.’s gradual recovery “could be derailed if Europe is not able to insulate the world from this crisis.”

MarketWatch Wednesday 12/7/11 4:55 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks on Wednesday closed near to where they began, with the Dow industrials displaying the most strength, as investors crossed their fingers two days ahead of a European Union summit. “We’ve got two big days ahead of us, which has freaked out the shorts, as people are assuming there will be an announcement that will buy us more time,” Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, said of a European Union summit on Friday. The bigger deal is how the European Central Bank responds to recent events, said Boockvar of conflicting messages that crossed computer screens late in Wednesday’s session. Japan’s Nikkei news agency reported the Group of 20 was considering a $600 billion International Monetary Fund lending program, but CNBC cited an IMF official who said no such plan was being considered. After a two-day decline, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 46.24 points, or 0.4%, to end at 12,196.37, supported by a 2.3% rise in JPMorgan Chase & Co. after the bank said it has the authority to buy back additional shares after spending less than regulators allowed on dividends. The S&P 500 Index added 2.54 points, or 0.2%, to 1,261.01, while the Nasdaq Composite Index declined fractionally to 2,649.21. Advancers edged ahead of decliners on the New York Stock Exchange, where 968 million shares traded. Composite volume topped 4.1 billion. “When people are afraid, you’re going to get these big swings, because the foundation isn’t there for certainty,” said Kim Caughey Forrest, senior equity analyst at Fort Capital in Pittsburgh. “In general you have to have a bit of optimism when you look at the U.S. economy, but we’re being nagged by Europe,” said Jim Dunigan, managing executive of investments at PNC Wealth Management. In separate statements Wednesday, Standard & Poor’s said the European Union’s AAA long-term rating and some of the region’s biggest financial institutions could be downgraded. Investors largely have held out hope this week that European Union leaders would reach agreement Friday on a plan that would help the 17 nations that use the euro to further connect their economies. Those expectations were bolstered by comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel supporting a stronger fiscal union among euro-zone members. Then late in Tuesday’s session, stocks made a brief surge on a Financial Times report that European leaders are considering letting the euro zone’s existing rescue fund continue running when a larger facility comes into force in the middle of next year, in a bid to bulk up the power of the bailout funds. Read Tuesday's Market Snapshot. But a German official on Wednesday threw cold water on that optimism in comments to reporters in Berlin, causing stocks in Europe giving up their gains after the reports. Read more about European markets. “There are conflicting messages on how much resolve they have in trying to fix the problem,” Dunigan said.“Some of those leaks are suggesting the optimism over what is going to happen may be overstated, and unfortunately we seem to be held hostage to that situation.”
