Post No. 1,643 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of May 16 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of May 16.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution &amp Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Thursday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,529.75 up 33.6 or 0.27%  from Wednesday's close of 12,496.15. For the year the Dow is up 2.56%. Of the 30 Dow components 20 gained and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   was  Chevron and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was   Caterpillar and percentage-wise was Cisco.

WSJ pC4 "Hope for Greece picks up stocks" by Kaitlyn Kiernan says US stocks finished higher after late afternoon comments from the Italiam premier boosted confidence that Greece would stay in the Euro.  Hewlett-Packard climbed 2.9% after it reported earnings that beat expectations and is charted under Good News.

NYT pB7 "In a mixed day the Dow finishes up" by AP says stocks were mired in a narrow range & finished mixed on Thurs as Hewlett-Packard announced layoffs, lifting gthe Dow for just the 4th time this month.

USA Today p4B "Stocks boucne back from early decline on news out of Europe" by Bloomberg says stocks rose Thurs sending the S&P higher for a 4th session after Italian Prime Minister Monti said a majority of leaders backed joint European bonds.

Inv. Bus. Daily pB2 "Major indexes close flat: techs drag nasdaq down" by David Saito-Chung says stocks ended a seesaw session litttle changed Thurs but a fresh batch of disappointing news in the computer tech sector weighed on the Nasdaq.  Thurs' action was mixed in lower trade as the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

As of the open of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.81 up from   yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.74 (year ago it was 14.10); today's P/E estimate is 11.75 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 11.75 (year ago it was 12.62) and today's dividend yield is 2.65 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.66 (last year it was 2.40). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,655.55 up 4.44 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,651.11. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $55.18 up 0.14 from Wednesday's average closing price of $55.04. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.19 (HD/DD) up $0.56 from Wednesday's median closing price of $48.73. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $444 ($165,555 - $165,111).

MarketWatch  Thursday 4:13 by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks made a late-day reversal Thursday as traders ran with the latest headlines from Europe, including comments from Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti that he expected Greece to stay in the euro zone. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.27% ended up 33.60 points, or 0.3%, at 12,529.75, led by Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ +3.27% . The S&P 500 SPX +0.14% rose 1.82 point, or 0.1%, to 1,320.68. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.38% dropped 10.74 points, or 0.4%, to 2,839.38. Tech stocks, outside H-P, were the hardest hit after recent earnings reports fostered concerns about corporate IT spending.
