10/25/12 Thurs. pm Dow Closes at 13,103.68 up 26.34 or 0.2%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thurssday at 13,103.68 up 26.34 or 0.2% from Wednesday's close of 13,077.34. Of the Dow components  17 gained and  13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble up $2.00 or 2.94%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.16 or 1.6%.



As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.92 dwon  from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.95 (year ago it was 13.16); today's P/E estimate is 12.59 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 12.59 (year ago it was 11.75) and today's dividend yield is 2.59 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.59 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,706.70 up  0.54 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,706.16. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.89  2 Cents up from Wednesday's average of $56.87. The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.20    (DIS/UNH) down 9 cents from yesterday's median closing price of 53.29. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Thurssday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $54   ($170,670 - $170,616 ).

Thursday 4:09  MarketWatch by Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks ended slightly higher on Thursday as several reports cast a more favorable light on the global economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.20% gained 26.34 points, or 0.2%, to 13,103.68. Shares of Procter & Gamble Co.PG +2.92% rose 2.9%, leading gainers on the Dow after the consumer-products company reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2013 that exceeded estimates. The S&P 500 index SPX +0.30% climbed 4.23 points, or 0.3%, to end at 1,412.98, with energy and health-care posting the biggest gains among its 10 major sectors. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.15% gained 4.42 points, or 0.2%, to 2,986.12.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Average:   The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,077.34 down 25.19% from Tuesday's close of 13,102.53.  For the year the Dow is up 7.0. Of the Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Caterpillar up $1.60 and percentage-wise was Alcoa up 2.57%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM down $10.50 or 4.98%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks slip again as Fed flags risks" by Jonathan Cheng says US stocks followed a day of steep losses with anothe decline after the Fed reiterated its economic concerns overshadowing positive housing data.  Tech & Ind'l sotcks weighed.  Cisco Systems dragged most hevily falling 63 cents or 3.5 after Juniper's CEO warned of more demand challenges ahead.  Health care & fin'l stocks offset some of the losses.  United Technologies led with a gain of 83 cents.

NYT pB3 "Market slides as investors ponder corporate reports" by By Reuters says stocks ended lower for a 2nd day Wed as investors reacted to anotehr round of underwhelming corp results  the Fed said it would stick to its stimulus plan until the job market improves.

WSJ pB2 "Lockheed awaits cuts" by Doug Cameron says the fear of sequestration  and existing budget custs were evident as  contractors were forced to focus on margins & expanding int'l slaes.  Lockheed, Boeing & Northrop reported better than expected 3Q profits Wed and raised their full year guidance.
