http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,446 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a  recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of  Friday's  Wall St. Journal,  Financial Times,   Investor's News Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg)  yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and  Thursday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thurs. at 15876.22 up 54.59 or 0.35% from  Wednesday's  close of 15761.78.   For the year the Dow is up 21.15%. Of  the Dow components  22  gained  and  8   declined.  The biggest gainer dollar-wise was  Boeing up $1.92 and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 1.73 % .  The biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Cisco down $2.63 or 10.96%.

WSJ pC4 "Stocks hit highs after Yellen talks" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow and S&P 500 hit new highs after Yellen defended the central bank's economic stimulus efforts but tech stocks were hurt by weak fin'l results from Cisco, which is charted under Bad News due to 1Q profit dropping 4.6%.

IBD pB2 "Stocks close with gains; Cisco weighs on Nasdaq" by Ken Shreve says a sell off in Cisco did not spead much as the market seemed to focus instead on testimony from Fed Vice chair Janet Yellen at her Senate confirmation hearing.  She had soothing words for the market that she would continue the Fed's stimulus policies.  Thursday's action was fresh highs in mixed volume as the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

NYT pB4 "Shares rise as Yellen reassures on stimulus" says the stock market rose Thurs whle the Dow and the S&P hit new highs after Yellen said she would continue the Fed's stimulus policies.

FT p21 "Cisco pulls tech stocks lower after warning of revenue fall" says Cisco weighed on tech sector after its warning that its rev would be hit in the current quarter hit its market value by 11%.  Walmart rose 0.3% despite lower than expected quarterly sales.  IBM was down 0.7%.

As of the open  of the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5   of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Friday's   trailing P/E ratio is  17.78 up  from Thursday's  trailing P/E of 17.73  (last year it was 13.70).  Friday's   P/E estimate is  14.70 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 14.70  (year ago it was 12.15) and Friday's  dividend yield is 2.15 up from Thursday's  dividend yield of 2.13  (last year it was 2.82). The Dow's all-time high was 15,876.22 on November 14, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2472.18 up 8.50 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 2463.68. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $82.41 up 29 cents from Wednesday's average closing price of 82.12.  The median closing price of  Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $79.01 (HD/WMT) up 63  cents from Wednesday's median closing price of $78.38  (NKE/WMT).  The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Cisco.

If  Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $850    ($247,218 - $246,386).

MarketWatch 11/14/13 Thurs. 4:48 pm by Victor Reklaitis says  U.S.stocks on Thursday closed at record highs for a second day in a row after Janet Yellen, who is nominated to lead the Federal Reserve, vigorously defended the central bank’s bond-buying program. The S&P 500 SPX +0.48%  rose 8.62 points, or 0.5%, to finish at 1,790.62, achieving a record close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.35% gained 54.59 points, or 0.4%, to end at 15,876.22, also scoring a record close. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +0.18%  added 7.16 points, or 0.2%, to finish at 3,972.74. At a Senate Banking Committee hearing, Yellen said that the benefits outweigh the costs of the Fed’s asset purchases, which aim to boost economic growth. Kim Caughey Forrest, a portfolio manager and senior equity analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group, noted that “the markets are probably comforted by what she said.” “She came across as a very capable candidate, and markets find that reassuring,” Forrest said. Trades also assessed weaker-than-expected jobless claims and a big earnings disappointment from Cisco Systems Inc. On the plus side, Japanese economic growth data were better than expected. Thursday’s jump came after the S&P 500 and Dow rallied to record closes on Wednesday, with some observers pinning the move on speculation that Yellen’s testimony would be positive for stocks.
  • Today’s market-moving news: Yellen defended the Fed’s stimulus efforts that have boosted stocks and tried several times to ease concerns that bubbles are forming. “She seems to be following the ‘Bernanke Playbook’ word for word,” said Tom Di Galoma at ED&F Man Capital Markets in an email. In U.S. economic news, weekly jobless claims edged down, but not by as much as economists expected. The U.S. trade deficit increased more than expected, while productivity rose less than anticipated.
  • The buzz: Fort Pitt’s Forrest said “the market’s a little ahead of itself,” so she was somewhat uncomfortable with Yellen saying that stock prices are not bubble like. Meanwhile, a Tell blog post highlighted some mostly bullish comments from DoubleLine Capital’s Jeffrey Gundlach and Goldman’s Abby Joseph Cohen. Gundlach says U.S. stocks are “the only game in town,” but he won’t buy high, while Cohen says there’s still value in U.S. stocks.
  • Today’s movers & shakers: Cisco Systems Inc. CSCO +0.16%  slid 11% after its earnings report late Wednesday, making it the worst performer in the Dow, the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. /WMT +0.23% closed up 0.2% following its quarterly earnings report.
  • Other markets: Gold prices settled higher for the first time in six sessions as Yellen offered her take on the precious metal. Crude-oil futures settled lower on the Nymex, while the dollar traded mostly higher against other major currencies. Asian stocks closed higher after data released overnight showed the Japanese economy expanded at an annualized pace of 1.9% in the third quarter, beating forecasts. European equities also rose. Growth in the euro zone slowed to 0.1% in the third quarter, but that matched forecasts.
