2/9/14 Sun/Sat Barron's Likes AT&T, Chevron & Cisco

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,562 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of January 27, 2014  and a summary of Dow 30 components'  recent SEC filings as of January 27, 2014.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's &  Investor's Business Daily; the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall St. Journal & Financial Times; & Sunday's & Saturday's  New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 15794.08 up 165.55 or 1.06%  from Thursday's close of 15628.53.  For the week the Dow was up 95.23 or 0.06% from last Friday's close of 15698.85. For the year the Dow is down 4.72%. Of the Dow components  29   gained  and only Coke   declined. The  biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing up $4.35 or 3.55%. The only and therefore biggest decliner dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Coke down 8 cents or 0.21%.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 2459.39 up 25.78  from  Thursday's closing numerator of 2433.61. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

IBD pB8 "Stock indexes find thrust: is correction all but over?"  by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was up in mixed volume while the current outlook is the market is in a correction.

FT p11 "Gap jumps as sales rise and higher earnings expected" by Eric Platt says investors shrugged off a disappointing report from the labor dept that showed the US economy added 113,000 jobs in Jan below expectations for 189,000.

Sat. WSJ pB1 "Shaky data can't stop stock rally" by Matt Jarzemsky, Kaitlyn Kiernan, Alexandra Scaggs says the Dow soared to its 2nd straight triple digit gain after the Labor Dept reported the US economy added just 113,000 jobs in Jan far fewer than expected.

As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of  Saturday's Wall St. Journal will be 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio will be 15.41 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.10  (last year it was 15.41).  Monday's P/E estimate will be 14.09 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.15  (year ago it was 12.54) and Monday's dividend yield will be 2.49 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.22 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 16,576.66 on December 31, 2013. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $81.98 up 86 cents  from Thursday's average closing price of $81.12. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $75.10     (WMT/HD) up 61 cents from Thursday's median closing price of $74.49    (WMT/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Cisco.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $2,578   ($245,939 - $243,361).

2/7/14 Fri. 5:23 pm MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova says US stocks finished the week with modest gains after a two-day rally helped indexes break a streak of weekly losses. The main indexes trimmed year-to-date declines, and some analysts are predicting an end to the pullback, which began near the middle of January. On Friday investors shrugged off disappointing January jobs gains and instead focused on the more positive details in the government’s report. The unemployment rate ticked down while the labor force participation rate edged up.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +1.06%  closed near session highs, adding 165.55 points, or 1.1%, to 15,794.08. The blue-chip index gained 0.6% over the past week, ending a two-week losing streak. The S&P 500 SPX +1.33%  closed up 23.59 points, or 1.3%, at 1,797.02 and recorded a 0.8% weekly gain after three straight weeks of losses. The Nasdaq Composite COMP +1.69%   ended the day 68.74 points, or 1.7%, higher at 4,125.86, gaining 0.5% for the week. The U.S. economy added 113,000 jobs in January and the unemployment rate fell to another post-recession low, of 6.6%, but the pace of hiring appears to have slowed over the past few months, according to new government figures.“The top line in the jobs report was weak but the details had many positive aspects,” said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of Multi-Asset Strategies at ING U.S. Investment Management.“The household survey side of the report, which we think leads the businesses survey, was far stronger at 638,000 -- there is a big discrepancy, so we believe the labor market is stronger than what the headline number suggests,” Zemsky said.
“Also, the fact that the unemployment rate fell and labor force participation rose is a good sign,” he added.
Details in the report, including an increase in aggregate hours worked and average weekly earnings, signaled a “reduction in labor-market slack,” said Millan Mulraine, deputy head of U.S. research and strategy at TD Securities.Adding to the positive sentiment were upbeat earnings from Expedia Inc. EXPE +14.29% . Shares surged 14% after the company’s quarterly profits beat estimates.Shares of Activision Blizzard Inc. ATVI +14.39%  jumped 14%. The videogame company reported a 51% decline in fourth-quarter profit late Thursday, but shares rallied as adjusted results beat expectations.Apple Inc. AAPL +0.17%  shares rose 1.4% after the Wall Street Journal reported the company bought $14 billion of its own shares in the two weeks since reporting results that left investors disappointed. From the turmoil in emerging markets to worries about Fed tapering, the more confusing the market seems to get, the more investors need to develop their voice of reason.Shares of LinkedIn Corp. LNKD +0.34%  fell 6.2% after the social network for professionals posted a weak outlook, though fourth-quarter results topped analysts’ forecasts late Thursday.
Cigna Corporation CI -0.47%  shares tumbled 9.2% after the health insurer’s disappointing fourth-quarter earnings added to Wall Street worries that insurers are getting squeezed by rising medical costs. In other markets, European stocks moved higher after the U.S jobs data, while Asia closed broadly higher. The dollar rose against the yen but fell against the euro on Friday.Gold futures rose for the third straight day, gaining nearly 2% over the week. Oil futures rallied, adding nearly 3% over the week.
