Post No. 2,841 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times, Investor's Daily Business, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 17172.68 down 107.06 or 0.62%  from Friday's close of 17279.74.  For the year the Dow is up 3.6%. Of the Dow components 5  gained and 25 declined.  The biggest gainer   dollar-wise   and percentage-wise was Procter & Gamble up 34 cents or 0.4%.  The biggest decliner   dollar-wise was Visa down $2.37   and percentage-wise was United Technologies down 1.83%.

WSJ pC4 "Dow's winning ways hit great wall" by Chris Dieterich says the Dow snapped a 5 day winning streak as uncertainty about china's economic growth injected caution into global fin'l markets.

NYT pB4 "Wall Street retreats, as China's weakening growth pulls shares and oil lower" & AJC pA7 "China, oil weigh on US stocks" by Steve Rothwell say these concerns made the market dive in its biggest loss in almost 7 weeks.

IBD pB3 "Uptrend under pressure; small caps rattled again" by Ken shreve says a wave of selling hit growth stocks Mon as the action saw broad losses in lower trade & the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

FT p23 "Wall Street" by Jennifer Bissell, Richard Blackden says US equities were weaker while the Dow lost 0.4%.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C6 of  Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.38 up from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.26  (last year it was 15.66).  Tuesday's P/E estimate is 15.28 up from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.10 (year ago it was 14.25) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.18 down up from  Monday's dividend yield of 2.19  (last year it was 2.12). The Dow's all-time high was 17279.74 on September 19,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2674.06 down 16.67 from  Friday's   numerator of 2690.73.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $89.13 down 56 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $89.69.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.42  (UNH/AXP) down 33 cents from Friday's median closing price of $88.75 (UNH/AXP). The lowest volume was  Travelers and the highest volume was Microsoft.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $1,667  ($269,073 - $267,406).

9/22/14 Mon. 4:08 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova, & Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks closed sharply lower on Monday, with the S&P 500 falling by its largest margin in nearly seven weeks. Investors turned skittish as they fretted about falling commodity prices and concerns about global growth. A decline in economic activity in August, measured by Chicago Federal Reserve as well as a drop in existing-home sales contributed to the dour Wall Street mood.
The S&P 500 SPX, -0.80%  closed 16.11 points, or 0.8%, lower at 1,994.29. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.62%  dropped 107.06 points, or 0.6%, to 17,172.68. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, -1.14%  fell 52.10 points, or 1.1%, to 4,527.69.Randy Frederick, managing director for trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab, said that market volatility is expected to rise in the next several weeks.“The end of tapering in October will coincide with midterm elections, which is historically a volatile period for stocks. We would caution investors in the near term and hedge against 3%-5% pullback,” Frederick said.Data released on Monday, shows U.S. economic activity was lackluster in August. Sales of existing homes unexpectedly declined in August, for the first time in five months, the National Association of Realtors reported Monday. NAR attributed the drop to fewer all-cash sales to investors.   China worries festering: Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, -1.44%  fell to two-month lows on Monday as traders worried ahead of the HSBC estimate for China’s September purchasing managers index, due after the close of U.S. markets.Any number under 50 — indicating contraction — could mean more losses for Asia markets, barring meaningful stimulus measures. At a G-20 meeting over the weekend, China’s Finance Minister Lou Jiwei said the country is facing downward pressure, but won’t “make major policy adjustments” due to changes in any individual economic indicator.“We’re not going to see this wall of money thrown at the Chinese slowdown,” Stuart Beavis, head of institutional equity derivatives at Vantage Capital Markets in Hong Kong, told Bloomberg News.Stocks to watch: Alibaba shares fell 4.3% on the second day of trading. With the e-commerce company’s underwriters set to exercise an option to sell additional shares, the IPO is now officially the world’s largest, Dow Jones Newswires reported Sunday. Shares in Apple, Inc. AAPL, +0.10%   closed slightly higher after the company said iPhone 6 sales topped 10 million during the first weekend, a new Apple record.AutoZone Inc. AZO, -4.00%   reported fiscal-fourth quarter earnings that topped estimates, but sales were slightly below forecasts. Shares were dropped 4%.Dresser-Rand Group Inc. DRC, +2.58%  gained 2.6% after German engineering company Siemens AG SIE, -0.49%  announced a deal to buy the U.S. oil-equipment maker for $7.6 billion. Shares of Sigma-Aldrich Corp. soared 33% after Merck & Co. Inc. MRK, +0.15%  said Monday it will pay $140 per share for the life-science and technology company, a price that values the company at around $17 billion. Other markets: Silver SIZ4, -0.14%  prices fell to four-year lows on Monday on dollar strength. Gold   GCZ4, -0.15%  recovered and settled $1.30 higher at $1,217.90 per ounce. The dollar BUXX, +0.00%  was largely unchanged but hovered around ¥109.15 Monday, just under a six-year high reached Friday.
