Post No. 2,981 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization  as of Dec. 20 and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings as of 12/20.

A  read of the print editions of  Tuesday's  Wall Street Journal,  Financial Times,  Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal & Constitution  & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Monday's  closing   stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed  Monday at 18038.23 down 15.48 or 0.09%  from Friday's close of 18053.71. For the year the Dow is up 8.8%. Of the Dow components 12  gained and 18   declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Home Depot up 78 cents or 0.75%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise  was and percentage-wise was IBM down $1.83 or 1.13%.

WSJ pC4 "S&P 500 notches another closing high" by Dan Strumpf says stocks kicked off the final week of the year with a new high for the S&P as investors appeared to shrug off the latest bout of political turmoil in Greece.

IBD pB3 "S&P 500 hits fresh high in another quiet session" by Ken Shreve says Monday's action was mostly unchanged in higher vol while the current outlook is uptrend under pressure.

NYT pB2 "Wavering, markets mostly rise" by AP says stocks inched mostly higher in light trading as investors shrugged off falling energy prices, a plunging ruble and turmoil in Greece.

As of the open of  the market on Tuesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117.  Tuesday's trailing P/E   ratio was 16.93 down from Monday's   trailing P/E ratio of 16.95  (last year it was 16.83).  Tuesday's P/E estimate was 15.93 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 15.93 (year ago it was 15.25) and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.40 unchanged from  Monday's dividend yield of 2.40  (last year it was 2.06). The Dow's all-time high was 18053.71 on December 26,  2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2808.84 down 2.41  from  Friday's   numerator of 2811.25.  This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.63 down 8 cents from Friday's  average closing price of $93.71.  The median closing price of  Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $93.99  (CAT/AXP) down 27 cents from Friday's median closing price of $94.26 (CAT/AXP). The lowest volume was   Travelers and the highest volume was GE.

If  Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost  $241 ($281,125 - $280,084).

12/29/14 Mon. 4:24 pm MarketWatch by Victor Reklaitis & Sara Sjolin says the S&P 500 edged up to another record close on Monday, but the Dow industrials snapped a seven-session winning streak. Utilities, the best-performing S&P sector this year, showed the biggest gain among the 10 main sectors on Monday. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.09% rose by 1.80 points, or 0.1%, to close at 2,090.57, leaving the benchmark up 13.1% for 2014, with two trading sessions left in the year. Monday’s mark also was the index’s 53rd record close of the year, or an average of one a week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.09% dipped 15.48 points, or 0.1%, to end at 18,038.23. The blue-chip gauge, up 8.8% so far in 2014, pulled back from a record close achieved Friday. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.00%  inched up by 0.05 point to finish at 4,806.91, while the small-cap Russell 2000 RUT, +0.32% tacked on 3.90 points, or 0.3%, to 1,219.11.Composite volumes for both the NYSE and Nasdaq were at roughly two-thirds of their 30-day average, according to FactSet. Trading is expected to be light throughout this holiday-shortened week.Looking ahead to 2015, Wall Street strategists on average predict further gains for the U.S. stock market, as an improving economy and lower energy prices offset rate hikes and increased volatility.Movers and shakers: Gilead Sciences Inc. GILD, +0.36% closed up 3.7% for the S&P 500’s best performance as Morgan Stanley upgraded it to overweight and Barron’s picked the stock as one of its 10 favorites for 2015.Energy-related stocks such as Nabors Industries Ltd. NBR, +1.48%   were also among the S&P’s big winners, although they gave back some gains as crude oil prices CLG5, -1.77% fell again and settled at the lowest level since May 2009.The energy SPDR XLE, +0.36% an ETF that tracks the S&P 500’s energy stocks, remains down 9.2% for the year, but it established at least a short-term bottom in mid-December. Greek drama: The global trading mood on Monday was dented by renewed uncertainty about the political landscape in Greece. The country’s parliament rejected Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’s candidate in a third and final presidential vote on Monday, meaning parliament will now have to be dissolved and a snap election held.Greece’s ATHEX Composite index GD, -3.91%  tumbled after the failed vote. But the pan-European Stoxx Europe 600 index SXXP, +0.11%   closed higher, shaking off early losses.
