Post No. 3,164 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a   recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components'  SEC filings.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 18191.11 up 267.05 or 1.49%  from Thursday's close of 17924.06.  For the week the Dow is up 110.97 or 0.61% from last Friday's close of 18080.14. Of the 30   Dow components all 30   gained and none  declined.  The  biggest gainer dollar-wise was Boeing up $3.97 and percentage-wise was Vida up 4.34%.

As of the open of  the market on Friday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.14985889030177.  Friday's trailing P/E   ratio is 16.39 up from Thursday's   trailing P/E ratio of  16.34 (last year it was 16.21).  Friday's P/E estimate is 16.03 down from Thursday's P/E estimate of 16.30 (year ago it was 14.81) and  Friday's dividend yield is 2.38 up from  Thursday's dividend yield of  2.28 (last year it was 2.26). The Dow's all-time high was 18288.63 on March 2,  2015. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2726.10 up 40.02 from Thursday's average numerator of 2686.08.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.67  change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $90.87 up $1.33 cents from Thursday's closing average of $89.54.  The median closing price of  Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $88.15 (CAT/XOM) up $1.13  cents from Thursday's median closing price of $87.02 CAT/XOM).  The lowest volume was Travelers  and the highest volume was Apple.

If  Friday   morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $4,020  ($272,610 - $268,608).

5/8/15 Fri. 4:28 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Barbara Kollmeyer says
U.S. stocks soared on Friday, with the Dow industrials posting their largest one-day point gain in more than three months. Solid gains on Friday helped the S&P 500 and Dow end the turbulent week with modest gains. Sentiment was lifted by nonfarm-payrolls data, which pointed to a pace of employment growth that was healthy enough to suggest that the economy may be on solid footing, but not so much as to quicken the first Federal Reserve rate hike. The U.S. economy added 223,000 jobs last month, while the unemployment rate fell to 5.4%, largely in line with expectations.
Scott Wren, senior global equity strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, said the jobs number was good but not great and exactly what the market needed to head higher.“It was a healthy jobs number, indicating the economy is doing OK, but it’s unlikely to sway the Federal Reserve too much,” Wren said. The solid employment report put the major indexes on track to finish the week slightly higher after a tumultuous week of trading. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.35%  closed 28.09 points, or 1.4%, higher at 2,116.09 and gained 0.4% over the week. All 10 main sectors finished higher on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.49%  jumped 267.05 points, or 1.5%, to 18,191.11 and finished the week 0.9% higher. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +1.17%  ended the session 58 points, or 1.2%, higher at 5,003.55 and finished the week roughly where it started.
“Despite the 5.4% unemployment rate, we believe there are still too many people who are part-time or marginally attached, which is why we are not seeing wage increases,” Wren said.
JJ Kinahan, chief strategist at TD Ameritrade, said stocks may continue to advance in a low-rate environment as investors chase richer returns that can’t be obtained in haven-investment like bonds.
“It is a good day for the stock market, but I would agree that the reaction may be a little overdone. As big today’s jump is, we are still not breaking out of the range that we had been stuck for months,” Kinahan said referring to a range of 2,080 and 2,112 on the S&P 500.“Certainly, the jobs number took the edge off the disappointing [gross-domestic product] growth in the first quarter, and there is more evidence that March was an anomaly and weather related,” Kinahan added.Randy Frederick, Managing Director of Trading and Derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said that the market anticipated a much weaker jobs number leading up to Friday and solid gains in employment resulted in a relief rally.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2686.08 up 12.30 from Wednesday's average numerator of 2673.78.   This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.14985889030177) you get the change in today's Dow. If  Thursday      morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $1,230  ($268,608 - $267,738).

5/7/15 Thurs. 4:30 pm MarketWatch by  Anora Mahmudova and Sara Sjolin says U.S. stocks closed higher on Thursday, recovering some of the losses from the previous two sessions, as turbulence in bond markets in the U.S. and in Europe appeared to subside. A stronger-than-expected weekly jobless-claims report, showing layoffs remain at 15-year lows, set the tone for the Friday’s highly-anticipated nonfarm-payrolls report. The S&P 500 SPX, +0.38%  closed 7.85 points, or 0.4%, higher at 2,088. Apart from the energy sector, which was hit following a drop in oil prices, nine of the main 10 sector finished higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +0.46%  gained 82.08 points, or 0.5%, to 17,924.06. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.53% added 25.90 points, or 0.5%, to 4,945.54. Colin Cieszynski, chief market strategist at CMC Markets, said the stock market is likely to trade sideways for some time.“Markets have rallied so much, that there are excesses which either need to be flushed out in a correction or trade sideways for the rest of the year and the let the economy catch up,” Cieszynski said.“At this points, the reaction to the jobs report will depend on whether people think a strong reading is good news because the economy is doing better or whether people think a weak reading is good news because the interest rates will remain low for longer,” Cieszynski added. “When market have been trading sideways for the past four months, it gets confusing,” he noted.Earlier investors remained on the sidelines following big fluctuations in government bond markets in the U.S. and much of Europe, while losses in the energy sector kept a lid on the S&P 500 and Dow.Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank, said the stock market valuations are high and are likely to keep rising due to continued demand from investors who are searching for yield in current environment.“The higher the markets rise, the harder the fall is going to be. But lack of alternative investments may keep pushing investors into equities for some time,” McCain noted.Global equity markets earlier suffered sharp moves following a jump in German bond yields. The yield on 10-year German Bunds TMBMKDE-10Y, +0.95%  jumped as high as 22 basis points to 0.8%, but has pared its gains to trade unchanged at 0.64%. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields TMUBMUSD10Y, -2.70%  rose 6 basis points to 2.18%.Data: The number of people applying for U.S. unemployment benefits remains near a 15-year low, rising a scant 3,000 to 265,000 in the seven days stretching from April 26 to May 2, well below economists’ forecasts.
