The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 10,388.14 up 21.9 or 0.21% from Thursday's close of 10,366.15. Year to date the Dow is up 18.37%. For the week the Dow was up 78.22 or .76. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 21 gained and 9 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was DuPont DD $32.3289 -2.5011 7.18% 25,027,389 NYSE. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was 3M MMM $78.24 +1.09 1.41% 4,366,365 NYSE and percentage-wise was United Technologies UTX $68.32 +1.06 1.58% 4,380,830 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Jrnl is .132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 18.02 up from Fri. morning's 17.98 (year ago it was 18.03) the P/E estimate is 16.05 down from Fri.'s 16.17 (year ago it was 9.93) and the current dividend yield is 2.67 unchanged from Fri. morning's 2.67 (it was 3.63 a year ago).

Most US manufacturing firms have a large manufacturing base today outside of the US. Kleinfeld, former ceo of Siemens said his sales are in dollars but his costs are in local currencies.

Fin Times p12 "metals man has a need to shine" by Peter Marsh, Richard Milne, William MacNamara interviews Alcoa's CEO Klaus Kleinfeld and has a large photo of him scowling. The nine months of '09 showed a net loss of $874 mil for Alcoa compared with net income of $1.1 bil in the same period in '08. Since '07, Alcoa has been forced to cut almost half its workforce, a total of 53,000 jobs.

WSJ pA2 "Estimated TARP Cost Is Cut by $200 Bil" by Deborah Solomon says the Obama admin plans to cut the projected long term cost of the Troubled Asset Relief Program by more than $200 bil in a move that could smooth the way for the introduction of a new jobs program. Banks have already repaid the Treasury about $70 bil and Bank of America has said it will return its $45 bil investment as early as this week.

Fin Times pA1 Headline: "Citigroup issues plea over Tarp repayment" by Francesco Guerrera says Citigroup is racing against the clock to convince US officials that it be allowed to repay $20 bil of bailout funds, with regulators arguing that unless the bank acts in the next 10 days it will have to wait for more than a month. Citi's need to pay back the Tarp funds has been heightened by last week's surprise announcement that Bank of America had raised $19.3 bil to repay $45 bil leaving only Citi and Wells Fargo as the only two big banks that have yet to repay Tarp.

Boeing BA $54.65 +0.88 1.64% 5,280,461 NYSE: WSJ pB1 "Long Overdue, Boeing Dreamliner Taxis Toward Its First Test Flight" by Peer Sanders says after more than 2 years of delay, Boeing Co.'s 787 Dreamliner could make its first test flight as early as next week. Once it takes off from its factory in Everett, Wash, BA faces another high stakes test: From the moment the Dreamliner is airborne through roughly the next 12 months, Boeing will race the clock to test the new aircraft in high altitudes, subzero temperatures, desert heat and emergency scenarios. Boeing still needs FAA certification before it delivers the first one to All Nippon Airways in the 4th quarter of next year. The original delivery data was May of '08.

The agreement is with Tokyo Electric Power known as Tepco to deliver 4.1 mil metric tons of LNG annually for as many as 20 years, which is equal to more than 20% of Tepco's annual consumption of LNG.

WSJ pC8 "Companies Must Flex Spending Muscles" by Liam Denning says with yields having fallen, pressure is on large firms to either make capital expenditures, do payouts to shareholders or do mergers and acquisitions because when big firms stop spending, their assets keep depreciating, industrial capacity shrinks and this spurs a revival in investment. This recession may be different in how firms are deploying cash. M&A activity is picking up as Danaher, Emerson and United Technologies have all announced $1 bil plus deals in recent months. The damage inflicted by the recession is prying free assets: an example is GE selling control of NBC universal to Comcast and its security biz to United Technologies.
