A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Monday's Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of Wall Street Journal & Financial Times, Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,810.54 up 47.23 or 0.37% from Thursday's close of 12,763.31. For the week the Dow was up 2.4% and for the month up 3.3%. For the year the Dow is up 10.65%. Of the 30 Dow components 18 gained, Kraft was unchanged and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $115.45 +2.81 2.49% 11,144,174 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.92 -0.79 2.96% 260,293,973 NASDAQ-GS.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Stocks tack on gains in rising volume" by Paul Whitfield says stocks posted small gains Fri, wrapping up a second positive week in a row. Friday's action was up in higher volume with the current outlook being a confirmed uptrend. Caterpillar was the lead listed in "Leaders up in volume".

Sat WSJ pA1 "April is a kindly month for stocks" by Jonathan Cheng says stocks had their best month of year in April, as strong corp earnings and the promise of continued low interest rates persuaded investors to make risky bets on small firm shares and volatile commodities.

Sat NYT pB7 "Market ends the week with momentum" by Christine Hauser says strong corp earnings, especially in the energy sector, lifted major stock indexes to 3 year highs on Fri. Microsoft was down by 2.96%.

Fin Times p14 "Caterpillar puts seal on week of bumper earnings" by Michael Stothard says large US indices hit multi-year highs this week after a number of bumper quarterly earnings reports & a well received statement on monetary policy from the Fed Res. Strong results from Caterpillar outweighed mixed results elsewhere. Microsoft lost 3% after reporting that rev from its Windows operating system had suffered a rare slip. It was the first quarter in more than 2 decades in which its profits had fallen below those of Apple. Merck was up 0.5% after reporting a tripling of its 1Q net income, while Chevron added 0.6% after announcing that its earnings were up 36% due to higher oil prices. Procter & Gamble & Boeing also reported healthy earnings and their stocks were up 2.6% & 5.7% over the past 5 days.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B4 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.53 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 14.95 (year ago it was 16.21); the P/E estimate is 12.91 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.68 (year ago it was 13.95), and the dividend yield is 2.30 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.31 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,692.65 up 6.24 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,686.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.42 up 0.21 from Thursday's average closing price of $56.21. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.38 (AXP/JPM) up 0.19 from Thursday's median closing price of $47.19. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $63.28 +0.22 0.35% 2,444,231 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.3 -0.12 0.97% 66,096,631 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $624 ($169,265 - $168,641).

Post No. 994 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 24, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 24, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,810.54 up 47.23 or 0.37% from Thursday's close of 12,763.31. For the week the Dow was up 2.4% and for the month up. 3.3%.

A read of the print editions of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Georgia - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,690.96 up 95.59 or 0.76% from Wednesday's close of 12,690.96. For the year the Dow is up 10.24%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $40.53 -0.51 1.24% 19,626,175 NYSE.

WSJ pC5 "Blue chips climb higher, adding 72 points" by Kristina Peterson says stocks extended their multiyear highs as the market clung to optimism generated by the Fed's plans to keep interest rates low & by the flow of encouraging corp earnings. Boeing climbed $2.43 and Procter & Gamble rose 48 cents after its 1Q earnings beat analysts' estimates, though it offered cautious guidance for the year reflecting higher commodity costs.

Fin Times p22 "Energy prices & jobs numbers damp mood but equities still rally" by Michael Stothard says Wall St continued to trend upwards following the multi year highs reached int he previous session, but sentiment held back slightly by mixed earnings reports from industry bellwethers Exxon and Procter & Gamble & disappointing data on US economic growth.

USA Today p5B "Markets set another high for '11" by AP says stocks closed at another '11 high Thurs despite modest US economic growth in the 1Q. Corp earnings were mixed. Procter & Gamble rose 48 cents after it reported higher earnings but cut its forecast due to rising costs. Exxon fell 44 cents even though it reported its best quarterly earnings since '08.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,686.41 up 9.66 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,676.85.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.21 up 0.31 from Wednesday's average closing price of $55.90. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.19 (AXP/JPM) up 0.63 from Wednesday's median closing price of $46.56. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $966 ($168,641 - $167,685).

MarketWatch Thursday 4/28/1 5:46 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks closed solidly higher Thursday, pushing the Dow average to its best finish in nearly three years after confidence in corporate results overcame weaker economic data. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.57% closed up 72.35, or 0.6%, to 12,763.31 points, its highest close since May 20, 2008. Twenty-three of the blue-chip components gained, led by Boeing Co. BA -0.19% , DuPont DD -0.02% and American Express Co. AXP +1.89% .
“Overall it’s been a good period, earnings have come in better than expected and the market is just sort of dealing with that right now. We’re very overbought but may have more room to run,” said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Banyan Partners LLC. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index SPX +0.36% gained 4.82 points to 1,360.48, with financials the best performer and energy the biggest laggard among its 10 industry groups. The S&P 500 closed Wednesday at 1,355.66, twice its bear-market low of 676.53 hit on March 9, 2009, or “doubling the index value in 26 months,” noted Howard Silverblatt, senior index analyst at S&P Indices. The gain of more than 100%, however, “needs to be interpreted with the fact that the index remains 13.38% off its Oct. 9, 2007, high,” Silverblatt added. Echoing a theme from past sessions, rosier outlooks from companies overshadowed dimmer views from the day’s economic data. Shares of Citrix Systems Inc. CTXS +0.70% rose 10% a day after the maker of infrastructure software raised its 2011 outlook.Motorola Solutions MSI +7.46% shares advanced 7.5% after the communications-equipment provider reported results. Read more on Telecom Stocks. Silver's "almost vertical ascent" is just one of many signals suggesting the metal's rally is reaching a top, says Richard Ross, chief technical strategist at Auerbach Grayson. Gold, or better yet, copper, offer better value. Norfolk Southern Corp. NSC -0.50% shares gained 8% after the railway operator reported a first-quarter profit that beat expectations, thanks to better freight demand. Those gains helped lift the Dow Jones Transportation Average DJT +1.18% 1.2% to 5,510, a record high. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP +0.09% rose 2.65 points, or 0.1%, to 2,872.53, its best since Dec. 12, 2000. For every 11 stocks falling, roughly 19 gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where 961.8 million shares traded. Earlier in the day, the Commerce Department reported the U.S. economy grew at a 1.8% annual rate in the first quarter, softer than the 3.1% pace for the prior three months. Separately, the Labor Department said the number of Americans filing for initial jobless claims last week rose 25,000 to 429,000, the highest total since late January. “These data points should not materially affect investor earnings expectations in coming quarters but point to the fact that the economy is growing at a lot slower rate than normally seen during the end of the second year of an economic expansion,” said Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos. The dollar index DXY -0.60% fell, while gold futures GCM11 +0.27% rose to end at $1,531.2 an ounce and crude oil CLM11 -0.14% slipped back below $113 a barrel in New York. The recent spike in commodities could prove temporary, given that the Federal Reserve plans to halt its $600 billion bond-buying program, also known as quantitative easing. The Federal Open Market Committee, which finished its two-day policy meeting Wednesday, agreed that the Treasury purchases would end as planned in June, saying the rise in commodity prices would likely have a transitory effect on inflation. Pavlik at Banyan Partners concurred the rise in prices would probably be temporary, as the Fed’s program weakened the U.S. dollar, making alternative assets more appealing, and therefore the reverse would likely to come into play once the Fed’s program ends. “The market is thinking oil prices may start to move lower as the dollar strengthens as QE2 nears its end. That is why you started to see comments by big investment firms calling for a pullback in oil prices,” said Pavlik.

Post No. 993 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of April 24, 2011 and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of April 24, 2011.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 12,763.31 up 72.35 or 0.57% from Wednesday's close of 12,690.96. For the year the Dow is up 10.24%. Of the 30 Dow components 23 gained and 7 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $78.55 +2.43 3.19% 7,348,463 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.95 up from Thursday's trailing P/E of 14.86 (year ago it was 16.70); the P/E estimate is 12.68 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 12.68 (year ago it was 14.10), and the dividend yield is 2.31 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.32 (last year it was 2.45). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,686.41 up 9.66 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,676.85.

The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $63.06 +0.81 1.3% 2,921,539 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $12.42 +0.09 0.73% 92,206,450 NYSE.
