Post No. 962 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of March 21, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Monday at 12,381.11 up 1.06 points or 0.01% from Friday's close of 12,380.05. Of the 30 Dow components 19 gained and 11 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Travelers TRV $60.42 +0.84 1.41% 3,641,513 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Chevron CVX $107.78 -1.88 1.71% 6,511,328 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Monday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Monday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.04 down from Friday's trailing P/E of 15.08 (year ago it was 17.17.15); the P/E estimate is 12.73 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.37 unchanged from Friday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.48). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,635.90 up 0.13 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,635.77. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.53 unchanged from Friday's average closing price of $54.53. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.62 (JPM/AXP) up 0622 from Friday's median closing price of $46.56. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $93.8 +0.58 0.62% 3,214,191 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.49 +0.01 0.07% 62,856,988 NYSE.

MarketWatch Monday 4/11/1 4:17 by Donna Kardos says U.S. blue-chip stocks eked out a slim gain Monday but other market measures fell slightly as investors traded cautiously ahead of the first-quarter corporate-earnings season. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 1.06 points, or 0.01%, to 12381.11. The Nasdaq Composite shed 8.91, or 0.32%, to 2771.51. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index slipped 3.71, or 0.28%, to 1324.46. The mixed activity came as investors looked ahead to the first-quarter earnings season, which kicked off unofficially Monday afternoon with Alcoa's report after the market close. Shares of the aluminum giant fell 15 cents, or 0.8%, to $17.77, prior to the company's release. Investors are generally expecting first-quarter earnings to come in strong, but they are concerned about the impact of rising food and energy prices. "There's some trepidation at this point in time," said Tim Evnin, partner and equity portfolio manager at Evercore Wealth Management. "The market is obviously up nicely on the year already and obviously up tremendously from its lows ... you continue to need strong earnings to support the markets here."

MarketWatch Friday 4/8/11 4:58 by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Friday after crude-oil prices surged above $112 a barrel and as budget talks to avoid a government shutdown faced a midnight deadline. The price of oil shows no sign of letting up. Also, how will a potential government shutdown affect the strength of the U.S. dollar? Budget negotiations on Capitol Hill weighed on Wall Street, with the political parties still at odds over spending just hours from what could be the first U.S. government closure in 15 years. “Nobody expects this to last a long time, but the divide between Republicans and Democrats is extremely large, especially if you include the Tea Party,” analyst Hugh Johnson said of the partisan battle. Caution on Friday was partially attributable to the coming earnings season.
“Part of the story is everybody’s waiting in great anticipation of the earnings season, which effectively starts Monday and gets on a real roll a week from Monday,” said Johnson, chairman of Hugh Johnson Advisors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,380, -29.59, -0.24%) fell 29.44 points, or 0.24%, to 12,380.05. But the loss wasn’t enough to tip the index lower for the week. It pushed out a tiny gain of 0.03%. Off 0.3% for the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX 1,328, -5.34, -0.40%) closed 5.34 points, or 0.4%, lower at 1,328.17, with financials the greatest laggard and energy up the most among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups.
The Nasdaq Composite Index (COMP 2,780, -15.72, -0.56%) fell 15.72 points, or 0.56%, to 2,780.42, down 0.3% from last Friday’s finish. For every stock rising, more than two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 800 million shares traded by 4 p.m. Eastern. Corporate results should help investors gauge the overall earnings impact of events in the Middle East, North Africa and Japan.
“We’ve already received hints that earnings will be impacted, energy companies will benefit and airlines will be penalized by the rise in oil prices,” Johnson said.
On Friday, crude-oil futures for May delivery (CLK11 113.11, +2.81, +2.55%) rose $2.49 to finish at $112.79 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Higher fuel prices constitute an energy tax on consumers and corporations, with the price tag not insignificant, said Johnson, who calculates oil’s spike from $83 to $108 a barrel would cost an added $152.2 billion over a year’s time. Johnson came to the figure by multiplying the price rise by the 18.8 million in barrels consumed by the U.S. each day, times the number of days in the year to reach his estimate. Among stocks on the move, Expedia Inc.’s (EXPE 25.30, +2.90, +12.95%) shares rose 13% a day after the online travel company said it would split into two companies. On Friday, the Justice Department approved search giant Google Inc.’s (GOOG 577.90, -0.26, -0.05%) purchase of ticketing-software firm ITA Software as long as ITA’s products remained available to Google’s competitors. Expedia and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT 26.05, -0.02, -0.08%) were among the companies that objected to Google’s planned $700 million acquisition of ITA.
