The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 12,426.75 up 32.85 points or 0.27% from Tuesday's close of 12,393.6. Of the 30 Dow components 20 gained and 10 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was JPMorgan JPM $47.64 +1.06 2.28% 29,866,112 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $111.02 -1.29 1.15% 5,474,450 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 15.06 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E of 15.07 (year ago it was 17.10); the P/E estimate is 12.75 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.75 (year ago it was 14.00), and the dividend yield is 2.37 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.37 (last year it was 2.49). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,641.94 up 4.39 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,637.55. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.58 up 0.07 cents from Tuesday's average closing price of 54.58. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.46 (JPM/AXP) up 0.45 from Tuesday's median closing price of $46.01. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $85.66 +0.26 0.3% 1,952,457 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $13.7375 +0.2675 1.99% 129,127,255 NYSE.
If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $439 ($164,194 - $163,755).

Inv. Bus Daily pA1 "Stocks relinquish gains following Fed minutes" by Vincent Mao says the major stock indexes ended narrowly mixed Tues as the Fed minutes raised tightening fears & took the steam out of a comeback rally. The current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,637.55 down .86 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,638.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices.
