Post No. 1,241 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 11,153.98 up 143.08 or 1.3% from Wednesday's close of 11,010.90. Of the 30 Dow components 28 gained and 2 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $94.1 +2.36 2.57% 9,274,596 NYSE and percentage-wise was Travelers TRV $49.68 +1.51 3.13% 3,811,415 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Microsoft MSFT $25.45 -0.125 0.49% 62,237,136 NASDAQ-GS NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.28 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.48 (year ago it was 14.62); today's P/E estimate is 10.83 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 10.83 (year ago it was 12.84), and today's dividend yield is 2.79 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.75 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,473.76 up 18.90 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,454.86. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.13 up $0.63 from Wednesday's average closing price of $48.50. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.07 (AXP/HD) up 0.03 from Wednesday's median closing price of $40.04. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $49.68 +1.51 3.13% 3,811,415 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.305 +0.145 2.35% 202,470,670 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,890 ($145,486 - $147,376).

MarketWatch Thursday 9/29/11 4:13 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed a roller-coaster trading session Thursday with gains for two of three indexes, led by blue-chips. After rising as much as 260 points and falling 45 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 143.08 points, or 1.3%, at 11,153.98, led by Travelers Cos. TRV +3.16% , Bank of America Corp. BAC +0.47% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. JPM +0.03% . The S&P 500 SPX +0.81% ended up 9.34 points, or 0.8%, to 1,160.4. The Nasdaq Composite COMP -0.43% fell 10.82 points, or 0.4%, to 2,480.76. "High volatility in a relative tight trading range tells you the market is uncertain about the economic outlook over the next 12 months. All we're seeing is within a day, what we've seen many times day to day," said Rod Smyth, chief investment strategist at Riverfront Investment Group.
