Post No. 1,207 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 10,992.13 down 303.68 or 2.69% from Thursday's close of 11,295.81. For the week the Dow is down 248.13 points or 2.21% from last Friday's close of 11,240.26. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $161.37 -3.88 2.35% 6,740,810 NYSE and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $22.65 -1.22 5.11% 36,898,155 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Friday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.60 down from Thursday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.73 (year ago it was 14.05); Fri's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Thur's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.50), and Fri's dividend yield is 2.71 up from Thur's dividend yield of 2.69 (last year it was 2.71). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,452.38 down 40.13 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,492.51. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.41 down 1.34 from Thursday's average closing price of $49.75. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.68 (AXP/JPM) down $1.84 from Thursday's median closing price of $41.52. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $48.14 -1.20 2.43% 4,556,468 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.98 -0.22 3.06% 255,478,227 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $4,013 ($149,251 - $145,238).

MarketWatch Friday 9/9/11 4:34 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stock indexes dove Friday on heightened worry about Greece’s debt crisis, pushing the dollar to a six-month high against the euro and 10-year yields to a record low. The distress came along with news that the European Central Bank’s top economist had quit and that Germany was reportedly preparing to safeguard its banks against a possible Greek default. European stocks plumb depths amid concerns over the sovereign-debt crisis and global growth, fund managers are tempted by rock-bottom stock prices but frightened that worst isn't yet to come. “The perception is the ECB is not on the same page, that it doesn’t have a clear vision of how to stimulate the economy,” said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at Charles Schwab Corp. Tallying its sixth straight triple-digit move, and its worst day in more than three weeks, The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 303.68 points, or 2.7%, to 10,992.13, down 2.2% from the week-ago close. All of the blue chips’ 30 components lost ground, including McDonald Corp.’s off 4%, after the world’s biggest burger chain reported a less-than-anticipated increase in global sales for August. Also weighing on the Dow, Bank of America Corp. shares shed 3.1% on a Wall Street Journal report that executives have discussed cutting about 40,000 jobs in an initial restructuring wave. The “disappointing results from McDonald’s didn’t help matters, and more jobs cuts from Bank of America — add those things up and you get some pressure,” Sorensen said. Down 1.7% for the week, the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined 31.67 points, or 2.7%, to 1,150.09, with energy and natural-resource firms hardest hit among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index shed 61.15 points, or 2.4%, to 2,467.99. For every stock rising more than six declined on the New York Stock Exchange, with more than 1.2 billion traded; composite volume neared 4.5 billion. As equities were hammered the U.S. dollar rose to a six-month high against the euro, while the 10-year Treasury yield used in determining rates on consumer loans including mortgages fell to a record. The ECB said Juergen Stark, a proponent of higher interest rates, would step down from its executive board by the end of the year, signaling a possible dispute among policy makers over how to combat the regional debt crisis. Stark’s move came as financial leaders from the globe’s most developed nations met in France to devise a strategy to bolster the world economy. Bank of America executives have discussed eliminating roughly 40,000 positions during a wave of restructuring — known as "Project New BAC" — that CEO Brian Moynihan is expected to discuss Monday, people familiar with the plans say. Stocks’ losses intensified after Bloomberg News reported German officials were readying a plan to recapitalize German banks should their Greek holdings overcome balance sheets.
“Some in Europe are finally realizing that the money being funneled to Greece to buy time from the inevitable would be better put to use to recapitalize banks to insulate them from sovereign haircuts,” Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Milller Tabak, wrote in an email. Sorensen at Charles Schwab said Europe is the dominant story for Wall Street and behind the ongoing volatility. “We have fiscal issues here, but nobody is seriously considering that the United States is going to default or break apart,” said Sorensen in contrasting Europe to domestic concerns. Stock-index futures had edged lower ahead of the ECB-related news as investors worried whether political gridlock in Washington would continue in the wake of President Barack Obama’s proposal unveiled Thursday night to create jobs and help lift the U.S. economy. “Once it gets into Congress, what comes out the other end is another thing. The process is not something the market is all that confident in,” said Sorensen.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,492.51 down 15.73 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,508.24. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Thursday 9/8/11 5:12 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks ended near their lows of the session Thursday after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank would discuss options to aid the economy later this month, but declined to offer specific proposals to help growth and employment. Stocks had been trading lower ahead of Bernanke’s remarks, after a jagged move higher. But declines intensified after the afternoon comments. The Fed chairman said the central bank has the tools to provide more support to the sluggish U.S. economy, but declined to say whether it's prepared to use them at its next meeting. “There were really no surprises coming out of what he said to fuel the market; that’s why it continued to sell off,” said Stephen Carl, head equity trader at the Williams Capital Group. After falling 131 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 119.05 points, or 1%, at 11,295.81. More than 3% drops in J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp. shares led declines on the index. Only five of the Dow’s 30 components rose. The S&P 500 Index declined 12.72 points, or 1.1%, at 1,185.90, with consumer staples and utilities the best performers and financials and industrials the hardest hit among its 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 19.80 points, or 0.8%, to 2,529.14. For every stock that rose, almost four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where less than 1 billion shares traded hands. In a speech that echoed August remarks made in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Bernanke said members of the Federal Open Market Committee would consider a range of tools to promote stronger economic recovery at a two-day meeting later this month. He also said he was not worried about a pickup in inflation earlier this year. While the Fed has been public about what tools it’s considering, including further bond purchases, there are some doubts any action will provide the kind of boost it did during the last few years of aggressive rate cuts and extraordinary stimulus. “Monetary policy has done the yeoman’s work here,” said Hank Smith, chief investment officer at Haverford Investments. “We need a better mix of fiscal policy. We can’t keep asking what else can the Fed do.” Thursday’s loss marks the major stock indexes’ fourth decline in the past five sessions. On Wednesday, U.S. stock indexes ended a three-session losing streak, with the Dow industrials gaining 275 points. “The battle in the stock market, and why we’re getting these wild swings, is on the one hand we have this economic data that continue to come in below expectations, so now the second-half [gross domestic product] is going to grow, but not by all that much,” said Haverford’s Smith. “On the other side we have corporate America, which is profitable, with terrific balance-sheet strength, record amounts of cash and valuations as cheap as they’ve been in 30 years,” Smith said. Stock indexes had opened lower after a report showed first-time applicants for jobless benefits climbed last week and as the European Central Bank noted increased risks to the euro region. Addressing a news conference in Frankfurt, ECB President Jean-Claude Trichet said economic threats to the euro region had increased, with the bank trimming expectations for growth this year and next. Read more on Trichet's remarks. In America, the Labor Department said jobless claims rose by 2,000 to 414,000 last week, with the claims figure exceeding expectations. Read more on U.S. jobless claims. In more welcome news, the Commerce Department reported that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed more than forecast in July, with the gap shrinking 13.1% to $44.8 billion. President Barack Obama addresses a joint session of Congress at 7 p.m. Eastern time Thursday. But expectations for that speech could be overblown. “Obama is not expected to bring a bold new plan to Congress, so the buildup to his speech may be [overdone],” wrote Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald, in a research note. Ahead of Friday’s open, a moment of silence is planned in memory of exchange members and the thousands of others who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, NYSE Euronext said in a statement Thursday. Officials instrumental in reopening the financial markets on Sept. 17, 2001, will ring Friday’s opening bell.
