As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.55 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.89 (year ago it was 14.26); today's P/E estimate is 11.50 unchanged from Wed's P/E estimate of 11.50 (year ago it was 12.53), and today's dividend yield is 2.73 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.77 (last year it was 2.67). MarketWatch Wednesday 9/14/11 5:53 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks extended gains into a third session Wednesday after German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy reaffirmed their support for Greece, giving temporary relief to concerns about an impending euro-zone default. “It appears Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy are doing to right things to ensure they (the Greeks) have the horsepower to back up the avoidance of default,” said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 140.88 points, or 1.3%, at 11,246.73. It had fallen as much as 112 points during see-sawing morning trade dominated by reports on Europe. Stocks found direction, sending the Dow up as much as 281 points, after Merkel, Sarkozy and Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou talked by conference call Wednesday. The French and German leaders said they were confident Greece will remain in the euro zone, according to media reports that cited government spokespeople. The leaders also reaffirmed support for a late July plan that’s designed to prevent a Lehman Bros.-style financial panic. Read more on Merkel, Sarkozy discussion at the WSJ. The market’s volatility is indicative of “extreme valuations on one side and extreme uncertainty on the other,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. At the end of last week, for instance, stocks were cheaper relative to Treasurys since anytime since the early 1950s. The uncertainty stems nearly entirely from Europe, according to Kelly. “The U.S. economy is growing at a very slow pace, but it’s still growing,” he said. “The real question is people who look at the Greek situation realize there is no way Greece can pay its bills in the long run.” The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index ended up 15.81 points, or 1.4%, at 1,188.68. A rally in industrial stocks led gains for all 10 S&P 500 industry sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 40.40 points, or 1.6%, to 2,572.55.
For every one stock falling, three rose on the New York Stock Exchange, where 1.1 billion shares traded. Composite volume was around 4.5 billion.
Gold and oil futures fell in New York, with crude off $1.30 to close at $88.91 a barrel and bullion down $3.60 to end at $1,826.50 an ounce. “The market has been Euro-focused for the last week or week and a half,” said Paul Nolte, managing director at Dearborn Partners. “It’s very much a day-by-day situation.” Ahead of Wall Street’s open, stock-index futures offered muted reaction to a pair of U.S. economic reports, which found that retail sales and prices paid by producers for wholesale goods both held flat in August. “The economic numbers were more or less in line,” said Stephen Carl, head equity trader at the Williams Capital Group. In corporate news, shares of Dell Inc. rose 3.3% day after the computer maker said it would add another $5 billion to a current stock-repurchase program totaling some $2.1 billion.
