Post No. 1,229 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,733.83 down 391.01 or 3.51% from Wednesday's close of 11,124.84. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was United Technologies UTX $68.31 -6.56 8.76% 13,063,365 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.41 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.73 (year ago it was 14.49); today's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.76), and today's dividend yield is 2.76 unchanged from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.76 (last year it was 2.63). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,418.25 down 51.67 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,469.92. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $47.28 down 1.72 from Wednesday's average closing price of $49.00. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.84 (AXP/HD) down $1.20 from Wednesday's median closing price of $41.04. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $47.38 -0.81 1.68% 8,155,395 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6. NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $5,167 ($146,992 - $141,825).

MarketWatch Thursday 9/22/11 5:03 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks were thrashed Thursday, with the major indexes taking their hardest single-day hit in five weeks, amid widespread selling of stocks and commodities on escalated fears about the global economy. “This is a class example of indiscriminate selling to raise cash, it’s not a selective process here,” said Art Hogan, head of product strategy, equity research at Lazard Capital Markets. After falling almost 528 points during the session, the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished with a drop of 391.01 points, or 3.5%, at 10,733.83. The battering left the Dow nearly 14 points above its lowest close for the year and represented its steepest drop since Aug. 18. All 30 of the blue-chip index’s components lost ground, with United Technologies Corp. hardest hit, its shares tumbling 8.8%. The S&P 500 Index SPX -3.19% declined 37.20 points, or 3.2%, at 1,129.56, with natural-resource and energy stocks slammed the hardest. It was also the S&P 500’s worst percent loss since Aug. 18. The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -3.25% shed 82.52 points, or 3.3%, at 2,455.67, the worst retreat since Aug. 18. For every stock rising, nearly 11 fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where more than 1.7 billion shares traded. Composite volume neared 7 billion. FedEx Corp. added to the bearish tilt, its shares falling 8.2% after the shipper cut its 2011 profit outlook and its CEO told a conference call that he expected sluggish growth would continue, although he does not expect the U.S. to fall back into a recession. The negative sentiment taking hold among investors is “driven by the bank runs in Europe, and some of the European banks are rumored to be looking in the Middle East for capital; it’s like a replay of 2008 for some of the U.S. banks,” said Charlie Smith, chief investment officer at Fort Pitt Capital.
The Financial Times reported that the European Union was speeding up the recapitalization of 16 mid-tier E.U. banks that were close to failing recent stress tests. Read more on E.U. bank recapitalization. “When you talk about bank recapitalizing and going to places like Dubai to do it, everything echoes back to 2008 except economic fundamentals,” said Lazard’s Hogan. Smith also pointed to Europe’s solvency issues, saying Greece is not a major issue, given “it’s only 2% of the euro zone, but Italy would be.” With worries about a new global banking crisis on the rise, and calls for recapitalization of European banks intensifying, flows into the safe-haven dollar are likely to continue. U.S. stocks were part of a global stock selloff as investors also reacted to the Federal Reserve’s statement late Wednesday. The central bank warned of risks to the economic outlook and unveiled a bond-swap program, seen as something that would have minimal sway in revitalizing growth. Technical issues are also in play, according to Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors. “We need to successfully retest 1,100 on the S&P; we’re getting close,” he said. The market’s reaction to the Fed was in large part “buy the rumor and sell the news” trade, as the central bank’s stance that it would replace short-term debt with longer-term Treasury bonds was widely anticipated, Orlando commented. Since Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke began telegraphing the central bank’s intention in his speech at Jackson Hole, Wyo., on Aug. 26, through Tuesday, the S&P 500 climbed about 7.5%, going from the intraday low to the intraday high. As Orlando put it: “They tell you what they are going to do, the market prices it in; they when they do it, and the market takes profit.” The Fed’s use of the word “significant” in describing risks to the global economy also caused discomfort, he added. The dollar and Treasurys rallied, sending yields on the 10-year note down 13 basis points to 1.72%. Commodities fell hard, with gold futures for December delivery sinking $66.40 to finish at $1,741.70 an ounce. Crude futures for November delivery dropped $5.41 at $80.51 a barrel. Casting a pall over global resource demand, HSBC’s preliminary China Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index fell to a two-month low in September, signaling a broad slowdown in China’s economy. The Stoxx Europe 600 index dropped 4.6%. The FTSE 100 index lost 4.7%. The Japan’s Nikkei 2 fell 2.1%, while Mexico’s IPC Index lost 4.8%. U.S. economic data on Thursday had U.S. leading indicators increasing 0.3% in August; a gauge of home prices rising 0.8% in July; and fewer people submitting new claims for unemployment benefits, although the decline still left applications above 400,000. Read the latest on weekly jobless claims. On Wednesday, stocks declined sharply in the final 30 minutes of trading, with the Dow industrials finishing with a loss of nearly 300 points, after the Federal Reserve said that it would rebalance its portfolio, as had been expected, but that it also saw “significant downside risks to the economic outlook,” citing Europe as an issue. “The Fed cannot engender growth; the Fed cannot engender risk-taking. What it can do is buffer declines, but let’s see a real decline,” said Smith at Fort Pitt Capital, pointing out that the S&P 500 is down 5.8% for the year to date, on a total return basis. “Let’s talk when we make it 18% or 20%. The Fed is going to hold their fire until they see the whites of people’s panicked eyes.”

MarketWatch Wednesday 9/21/11 4:03 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Wednesday after the Federal Reserve again moved to lower interest rates on consumer loans and noted “significant downside risks” to the economic forecast. Wall Street’s negative reaction came as analysts noted divisions within the central bank, and questioned how much relief its latest move would bring. “There is so much liquidity in the economy that additional liquidity may not do much for the economy,” noted Sung Won Sohn, a professor of economics at California State University, Channel Islands. Down about 20 points before the Fed statement, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately off 160 points at 11,248.66, with 28 of its 30 components losing ground. The S&P 500 shed 21.52 points to 1,180.57, with technology the best performer and natural resources the worst among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 19.98 points to 2,570.26. For every stock rising, four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 824 million shares traded as of 3:35 p.m. Eastern. Fed policy makers said they would replace short-term debt in the central bank’s portfolio with longer-term Treasury bonds in a bid to further cut borrowing costs. The move, dubbed “Operation Twist” by economists after a like move by the central bank in 1961, bypasses the money creation that fueled a Republican outcry last year. As at the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting in August, three Fed members dissented. “The latest stimulus measures by the central bank was limited. There is a deep division within the FOMC,” Sohn wrote. “The key point is the Fed addressed purchases of mortgage-backed securities to help reinvigorate residential real estate,” said Art Hogan, head of product strategy, equity research at Lazard Capital Markets. Coal producers and railways slid after Alpha Natural Resources Inc. reduced its shipment outlook for the year, while technology companies proved the session’s bright spot a day after quarterly results from software makers Oracle Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc. lifted sentiment. Blue-chip decliners included Bank of America Corp. after Moody’s Investors Service downgraded its debt, along with that of Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. Hewlett-Packard Co. rose the most among the Dow 30, with shares of the PC and printing giant rising after media reports that the company’s board planned to consider ousting Chief Executive Leo Apotheker, citing sources familiar with the matter. A day ahead of the Fed’s decision, Republican leaders in Congress urged the central bank to refrain from any more action to “avoid further harm” to the U.S. economy, with the move an unusual one given the Fed is supposed to conduct monetary policy without political pressure. “I would be shocked that any further action by the Fed is going to do further harm to an economy. We are dangerously close to the potential ‘checkmate’ of the U.S. economy’s hope for near-term growth and everything should be on the table,” wrote Keven Giddis, a fixed-income analyst at Morgan Keegan. “Greater political influence on the conduct of monetary policy is going to be very worrisome to investors. To comment so publicly is to blur the lines between acceptable and unacceptable. Elections have consequences and if a given party is unhappy with the Federal Reserve, the Post Office or even the DMW, then we suggest they win an election and change things that way,” offered Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. Stock indexes briefly added to what had been modest gains after an industry report illustrated a surge in existing-home sales, with the National Association of Realtors reporting a 7.7% rise in August. Read more on above-consensus increase in August home sales. Also Wednesday, packaged-food maker General Mills Inc. reported adjusted results for the first quarter that beat estimates and reaffirmed its full-year adjusted earnings outlook. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the December gold futures contract fell a dollar to end at $1,808.10 an ounce, while crude for November delivery fell $1.00 to $85.92 a barrel. U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday on worries of little progress in Greece’s effort to ensure it would get more financial aid.
