Post No. 1,200 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.
A read of the print editions of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & San Francisco Chronicle yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.
Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 11,240.26 down 253.31 or 2.2% from Thursday's close of 11,493.57. For the week the Dow was down 44.26 or 0.04% from last Friday's close of 11,284.54. For the year the Dow is down 2.9%. Of the 30 Dow components 0 gained and all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $166.98 -3.35 1.97% 4,979,011 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $7.25 -0.66 8.34% 305,988,590 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.54 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.82 (year ago it was 14.10); Tues's P/E estimate is 11.52 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 11.23 (year ago it was 12.50), and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.73 up from Friday's dividend yield of 2.65 (last year it was 2.81). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,485.17 down 33.46 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,518.63. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.51 down $0.71 from Thursday's average closing price of $50.62. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.57 (AXP/JPM) down $1.23 from Thursday's median closing price of $42.90. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $79.35 -2.26 2.77% 4,391,281 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.25 -0.66 8.34% 305,988,590 NYSE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,346 ($151,863 - $148,517).
MarketWatch Friday 9/2/11 5:05 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Friday dropped for a second day, with payrolls at a standstill in August, prompting investors to worry whether the country can overcome partisan gridlock on Capitol Hill to deal with its economic challenges. “Today’s data puts the ball in the House’s hand. What can they say in response to the president’s plan for job growth? ‘No, we don’t want jobs, we want deficit cuts?’” wrote Elliot Spar, market strategist at Stifel, Nicolaus & Co., in emailed commentary. While there is much disagreement about whether the Federal Reserve should do more, Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at Charles Schwab & Co., said his firm would prefer that the central bank stay on the sidelines. “There is already plenty of liquidity in the economy, and the earnings season was good, companies certainly haven’t overhired or overextended themselves, so the corporate side is looking pretty good,” he added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the session down 253.31 points, or 2.2%, at 11,240.26, logging a 0.4% weekly slide. All 30 Dow components fell, with Bank of America Corp. off 8.3% and J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. down 4.4%, after the New York Times reported the lenders to be among the big financial institutions that could be sued by the Federal Housing Finance Agency for misrepresenting the quality of mortgage securities sold at the peak of the housing bubble. The S&P 500 Index declined 30.45 points, or 2.5%, at 1,173.97, with the financial sector slammed the hardest among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups. Netflix Inc.’s shares fell 8.6% after Starz LLC cable network halted contract-renewal negotiations with the online movie-rental firm. Read commentary on how Wall Street was moved by Starz. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 65.71 points, or 2.6%, at 2,480.33. It managed to cling to a minor gain of 0.02% for the week. Losers outpaced winners nearly six to one on the New York Stock Exchange, where 975 million shares traded as of 4 p.m. Eastern. Composite volume topped 3.8 billion. The Labor Department reported payrolls were unchanged on the month, while the jobless rate held at 9.1%, as the first downgrade of the country’s credit, political bickering over the U.S. budget and worries about European debt had companies and consumers alike curbing expenditures. The nation's unemployment rate didn’t change in August. In addition, virtually zero jobs were added to the economy. “The story it’s telling is August was pretty weak. The debt debate in Washington hurt business confidence, and they cut back on their hiring,” said Sorensen at Charles Schwab. While the jobs report did not help the case for equities on Friday, U.S. stock futures were already lower on European-related concerns, with negotiations between Greece and its lenders grinding to a halt.
“No one was expecting a great jobs report,” according to Sorensen, who believes events overseas are an even larger concern for investors than domestic issues. “In the U.S., we’re worried about slowing growth, but we’re not worried about a financial-system collapse. There is no confidence that they know at all what they are doing over there.” Of the 493 S&P 500 companies that have so far reported results for the second quarter, with 71% tallying earnings that exceeded expectations, 10% reporting in-line earnings and 19% posting earnings below expectations, according to research compiled by Thomson Reuters. In the holiday-shortened week ahead, three S&P 500 companies are slated to report quarterly results. Altera Corp. is expected to report on its second quarter on Tuesday, National Semiconductor Corp. is scheduled for Thursday and grocer Kroger Co. is on Friday’s calendar. The market will be closed on Monday for the U.S. Labor Day holiday.
