Fin Times p24 "Gains for Morgan Stanley & Goldman as S&P tops 1,200" by Ajay Makan says the S&P closed above 1,200 for the first time since 9/1 as the rally stretched to 4 days.

NYT pB9 "Markets cheer central banks' effort to stabilize Europe" by AP says a joint effort by 5 major central banks to support Europe's fin'l sysem set off a rally in stocks Thurs as gold plunged & Treasury yields rose as traders sold the safest investments. Markets in Europe soared.

USA Today p4B "Group effort by int'l policymakers calms markets" by Bloomberg says Wall St extended its winning streak to a 4th day Thurs as the European Central Bank & int'l policymakers coordinated to lend dollars to banks to tame the credit crisis, offsetting concern spurred by signs unemployment is worsening.

As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Friday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.75 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.55 (year ago it was 14.29); today's P/E estimate is 11.50 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 11.50 (year ago it was 12.53), and today's dividend yield is 2.69 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.73 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,510.66 up 14.64 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,486.02. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.36 up 0.83 from Wednesday's average closing price of $49.53. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.76 (AXP/HD) up $0.49 from Wednesday's median closing price of $41.27. If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,464 ($151,066 - $148,602).

MarketWatch Thursday 9/15/11 4:25 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks ended higher for the fourth session Thursday, pumped from the start after the European Central Bank unveiled a coordinated dollar-liquidity program with other central banks.
