Post No. 1,204 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today & San Francisco Chronicle yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,414.86 up 275.56 or 2.47 from Tuesday's close of 11,139.3. For the year the Dow is down 1.4%. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 gained and 0 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $99.29 +3.68 3.85% 10,572,767 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $7.48 +0.49 7.01% 257,094,768 NYSE.

WSJ pC1 "A rally by banks boosts Blue Chips" by Jon Cheng says it wasn't a banner day for the global economy, but investors needed just a few glimmers of hope to snap the 3 day slide by stocks. Fin'ls got a boost late Wed when Bof A shuffled its top mgmt.

USA Today p4B "Stocks shake off Step doldrums, rally for gains' by Bloomberg says stocks rose Wed giving the S&P index its biggest rally in 2 weeks, as investors speculated that Obama's plan to inject more than $300 bil into the economy will bolster growth.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.73 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.43 (year ago it was 14.01); Thur's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Wed's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.50), and Thur's dividend yield is 2.69 down from Wed's dividend yield of 2.73 (last year it was 2.71). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,508.24 up 36.41 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,471.83. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.27 up $2.21 from Tuesday's average closing price of $49.06. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.40 (AXP/JPM) up $1.65 from Tueday's median closing price of $40.75. The lowest volume was United Technologies UTX $72.96 +2.46 3.49% 4,620,549 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.48 +0.49 7.01% 257,094,768 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $3,641 ($150,824 - $147,183).

MarketWatch Wednesday 9/7/11 4:29 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks on Wednesday finished higher for their first session in four as fears about Europe’s debt troubles abated and the Federal Reserve found modest economic expansion. A ruling by Germany’s top court that the country could participate in regional rescue plans and the Italian Senate’s approval of an austerity plan helped offset fears about Europe. “One of the interesting things about the market the last three days and possibly last three months is the key focus has been Europe, and today the news is less bad and quite possibly good,” said Art Hogan, head of product strategy, equity research, at Lazard Capital Markets. “One of the biggest concerns we have had was the ability of the ECB [European Central Bank] to deal with this crisis, and at least for today, they seem to be moving in the right direction,” Hogan added. And, the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book found modest growth in its survey collected on or before Aug. 26 from its 12 districts. “Bottom line, no surprises,” Peter Boockvar, equity strategist at Miller Tabak, noted of the information collected by the central bank. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 275.56 points to close at 11,414.86, with all 30 of its components rising, led by Bank of America Corp. , up 7% a day after a management shake-up. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index gained 33.38 points to end at 1,198.62, with financial companies leading gains that included all 10 of its industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 75.11 points to closed at 2,548.94. All three benchmark indexes finished at their highest levels of the day. For every stock that fell nearly nine gained on the New York Stock Exchange, where nearly 954 million shares traded by the end of the session. Crude-oil futures added $3.32 to close at $89.34 a barrel, while gold futures fell $55.70 to close at $1,817.60 an ounce in New York. In an address to a joint session of Congress Thursday night, Obama plans to propose bolstering employment by injecting more than $300 billion into the economy next year, mainly through tax cuts, infrastructure spending and aid to state and local governments. In Berlin, the country’s Constitutional Court rejected lawsuits aimed at halting Germany’s participation in emergency loan packages, easing worries some about Europe’s ongoing debt troubles. In a speech Wednesday in London, Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans said the Fed should move aggressively to curb unemployment, even if it means temporarily boosting inflation.
