Post No. 1,225 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,408.66 up 7.65 or 0.07% from Monday's close of 11,401.01. Of the 30 Dow components 16 gained, 3M was unchanged and 13 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $174.72 +1.59 0.92% 5,959,060 NYSE and percentage-wise was Home Depot HD $34.81 +0.46 1.34% 13,583,519 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Chevron CVX $97.79 -0.92 0.93% 8,380,421 NYSE and percentage-wise was Alcoa AA $11.25 +0.33 2.85% 22,636,232 NYSE.
As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.72 down from yesteray's trailing P/E ratio of 12.84 (year ago it was 14.51); today's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.76), and today's dividend yield is 2.70 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,507.42 up 1.01 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,506.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.25 up 0.04 from Monday's average closing price of $50.21. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.08 (AXP/HD) up $0.56 from Monday's median closing price of $41.52. The lowest volume was 3M NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6. NYSE.
If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,427 ($150,641).
MarketWatch Tuesday 9/20/11 4:33 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks squandered most gains Tuesday as Wall Street looked for signs of resolution to Europe’s debt crisis and for steps from the Federal Reserve to boost the economy. “A lot of it at this point really trades over optimism or pessimism about Europe; it’s a giant game of chicken, as the political forces in Europe have the power to make this go away,” said Bruce McCain, chief investment strategist at Key Private Bank. McCain said the Fed will probably implement a few measures to help the economy that don’t involve adding more to the central bank’s balance sheet. After rising as much as 148 points, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.07% finished up 7.65 points, or 0.1%, at 11,408.66. Of its 30 components, 16 advanced, led by a 1.3% increase in shares of Home Depot Inc. HD +0.34% The S&P 500 Index slipped 2 points to 1,202.09, with defensive sectors utilities, health care and telecoms performing the best. The Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 22.59 points to 2,590.24.
For every stock rising, nearly two declined on the New York Stock Exchange, where 926 million shares changed hands. In a teleconference during the session, Greek officials and international lenders discussed the next installment of emergency funds viewed as needed to keep the country from defaulting on its debts. Europe stocks gained Tuesday on optimism for an agreement. “The Greece populace is going to have to get used to an austere future to deal with their problems, and the Germans are going to have to get used to paying more of the bill than they are used to if they want to salvage their own economy,” said McCain at Key Private Bank. The Fed’s two-day policy meeting, concluding Wednesday, could have the central bank taking additional steps to bolster the economy. Read more on expectations for Federal Open Market Committee meeting. Many expect the Federal Open Market Committee to opt for a move known as “Operation Twist,” which would involve the central bank selling shorter-term notes and buying longer-term Treasury bonds in an effort to bend the yield curve. “There is a significant segment that always looks at the Federal Reserve as a generous grandparent ready to bestow a new treat,” added McCain of investors’ expectations. ConAgra Foods Inc.’s shares fell 1.7% after the food manufacturer reported a first-quarter profit below Wall Street’s expectations but maintained its full-year earnings forecast. Shares of Oracle Corp. fell 2.3%; the business-technology provider reported quarterly results after Tuesday’s close. “There is uncertainty about this quarter’s reports. If companies continue to meet or beat expectations, it will be difficult for investors to ignore the deeply discounted valuations. However, this week is more likely to struggle with short-term news from housing, the Fed and Europe,” wrote Marc Pado, U.S. market strategist at Cantor Fitzgerald, in an emailed note. Wall Street offered little reaction to a Commerce Department report that U.S. housing starts fell 5% in August, illustrating a still troubled industry. Read more on housing starts. Stocks had wobbled in negative territory shortly following the open, after the International Monetary Fund reduced its outlook for global economic growth, saying the repercussions could be severe should Europe not succeed in containing its debt troubles, or if U.S. lawmakers fail to reach agreement on a fiscal plan.
