WSJ pC1 "Global jitters trip up a rally" by Brendan Conway says after a 5 day run of optimism last week, investors began the new week with decidedly less fervor as investors pushed stocks lower in volatile trading as global policy makers geared up for another wave of action to address mounting economic worries. Fin'l stocks ledby Bank of America, which fell 24 cents, were the weakest performing sector in the S&P 500 as they have been for most of the year. Energy, material & industrial stocks also fell sharply. Alcoa, which is sensitiveto theglobal economic outlook, given its reliance on demand for aluminum shed 39 cents. Goodrich gained 14.71 after reports that United Technologies is in talks to acquire it.

Fin Times p24 "Goodrich soars on bid talk as 5 day rally comes to an end" by Ajay Makan says Goodrick jumped on reports that Untied Tech is preparing a bid for it.

USA Today p4B "Fears about Greece returnto end rally, send stocks down" by Bloomberg says stocks retreated Mon, ending the longest winning streak since Julyfor the S&P amid concern Greece willfail to qualify for more fin'l aid needed to avoid a debt default.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.72 down from yesteray's trailing P/E ratio of 12.84 (year ago it was 14.51); today's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.76), and today's dividend yield is 2.70 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.67 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,506.41 down 14.27 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,520.68. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.21 down 0.48 from Friday's average closing price of $50.69. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.52 (AXP/HD) down $0.85 from Friday's median closing price of $42.37. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV
$49.9 -0.71 1.4% 4,169,042 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.99 -0.24 3.32% 195,255,711 NYSE.

If Monday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,427 ($152,068 - $150,641).

MarketWatch Monday 9/19/11 4:09 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks quit a five-day winning streak to close lower Monday after recent euro-zone meetings signaled a Greek default might be sooner than some expected. The major indexes recovered somewhat in the last hour of trading, however, on a report that Greece was near a deal with its international creditors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 108.08 points, or 0.9%, to 11,401.01, led by a 3.3% drop in Bank of America Corp. shares. At its lows, the Dow was down nearly 254 points.
