Post No. 1,221 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Saturday's combined Sat/Sun issue of each of The Wall St. Journal & Financial Times & Sun's & Sat's New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 11,433.18 up 186.45 or 1.66% from Thursday's close of 11,433.18. For the week the Dow was up 516.96 points or 4.7% from last Friday's close of 10,992.13. For the year the Dow is down 0.56%. Of the 30 Dow components 21 gained and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was IBM $172.99 +2.90 1.7% 10,500,494 NYSE and percentage-wise was Intel INTC $21.97 +0.43 2% 86,559,873 NASDAQ-GS. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $85.9 -0.70 0.81% 10,256,114 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $18.15 -0.34 1.84% 73,411,857 NYSE.

WSJ pB5 "Banner week for Dow" by Steve Russolillo says stocks surged this week, rising all 5 days and 516.96 points, amid hopes that Europe's debt crisis won't spiral out of control. Procter Gamble led the Dow rising $1.55 while Intel gained 43 cents. Weighing on the downside were Bank of America which dropped 10 cents & JPMorgan which declined 38 cents. United Technologies was down 11 cents on reports that it was seeking financing to fund an acquisition of a US firm.

Fin Times p13 "RIM & Netflix miss rally on gloomy outlook" by Telis Demos says US stocks were on target to enjoy a weekly gain, but a pair of previously high flying tech shares were hit hard by falling expectations. Bank of America cuts its gains on the week in half on Fri. BofA has been selling assets in an attempt to shore p its capital base to assure investors it can withstand an economic slowdown.

Sat NYT pB6 "Hints of progress in Europe cap a week of gains" by Reuters says stocks rose for a 5th straight day on Fri & the S&P scored its best week since early July on signs that euro zone leaders were acting together to limit any damage from the sovereign debt crisis.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Saturday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.84 up from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.75 (year ago it was 14.31); Saturday's P/E estimate is 11.52 up from Friday's P/E estimate of 11.50 (year ago it was 12.76), and Saturday's dividend yield is 2.67 down from Friday's dividend yield of 2.69 (last year it was 2.66). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,520.68 up 10.02 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,510.66. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $50.69 up 0.33 from Thursday's average closing price of $50.36. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $42.37 (AXP/HD) up $0.61 from Thursday's median closing price of $41.76. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $80.53 -0.10 0.12% 5,851,281 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $7.23 -0.10 1.36% 236,073,466 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $1,002 ($152,068 -$151,066).

MarketWatch Friday 9/16/11 4:12 pm by Laura Mandaro says U.S. stocks closed higher for the fifth straight session Friday, pushing up weekly gains to more than 4%, as investors dialed down their concerns about an impending Greek debt default. It was the first weekly rise in three for the Dow average and the S&P 500. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 75.91 points, or 0.7%, to 11,509.09 and gained 4.7% for the week. The S&P 500 rose 6.9 points, or 0.6%, to 1,216.01 and rose 5.4% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite gained 15.24 points, or 0.6%, to 2,622.31 and rallied 6.3% for the week.
