As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.32 up from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.02 (year ago it was 14.59); today's P/E estimate is 10.83 unchanged from Monday's P/E estimate of 10.83 (year ago it was 12.84), and today's dividend yield is 2.78 down from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.85 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,478.62 up 19.40 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,459.22. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended up 146.83 points, or 1.3%, at 11,190.69, led by a 3.9% rise in Hewlett-Packard Co. shares. At its peak, the Dow had risen more than 300 points. The S&P 500 ended up 12.43 points, or 1.1%, at 1,175.38, led by natural resource and materials stocks. Utilities and financial sectors lagged. The Nasdaq Composite rose 30.14 points, or 1.2%, to 2,546.83

Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,459.22 up 35.99 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,423.23. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the increase in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.65 up 1.21 from Friday's average closing price of $47.44. The median closing price of Monday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.78 (AXP/HD) up $0.69 from Friday's median closing price of $40.09. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 272.38 points, or 2.5%, to 11,043.86, led by a nearly 7% surge in the shares of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. and a 4.6% rally in Bank of America Corp. shares. The S&P 500 ended up 26.52 points, or 2.3%, to 1,162.95, led by a 4.4% rally in financial stocks.
