A read of Friday's Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, USA Today & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Thursday's stock prices and related data.
Dow:The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 10,611.84 up 44.51 0.42% up from Wednesday's close of 10,567.33. For the year the Dow is up 1.76%. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 25 gained, ExxonMobil was unchanged and 4 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was IBM $127.6 +1.98 1.58% 7,925,739 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Coca-Cola KO $53.6 -0.60 1.11% 14,573,713 NYSE.
WSJ pC1 "Fin'ls Boost Dow" by Peter A. McKay says stocks rallied to a 3rd consecutive gain, buoyed by bullish comments from Citigroup's ceo. Talk of a possible sale by the gov of Citigroup shares which wold free Citigroup from gov overshight, has pushed the bank's shares higher in recent days. Trading in Citigroup represented mroe than one fifth of the market's overall vol as 1.2 bil shares changed hands, more than 8 times that of Bank of America, the next most active stock.
WSJ pC "Citigroup Rises 5.6% On Pandit Comments" by Donna Kardos Yesalavich says large cap stocks due to bullish comments from Citi's ceo and this boosted investor sentiment for a host of firms including Disney and Home Depot. The dow had its highest close since 1/19, it closed at the day's high, month to date it is up 2.78% and is down 3,552.69 or 25% from its record close of 14,164.53 on 10/9/07.
Fin Times pA22 "Blue chips close in positive territory after late turnround" by Masa Serdarevic says US stocks regained group Thurs. after falling early in the session as investors digested mixed US economic data releases and warnings by Beijing that inflation will be a problem for its economy this year.
USA Today p6B "Optimism from banks sends stocks up" by Bloomberg says the stock market rallied Thurs as Citigroup and Zions Bancorporation led a bank rally and investors speculated taht health care reform will be harder to pass.
AJC pA15 says "Stocks climb as financial shares rise" says a rally in fin' stocks Thurs. helped the market extend its grind higher to a 3rd day. The SP 500 index cleared an important hurdle when it closed just above its Jan. peak to set a new 17 month high. Fin'l shares rose after Citigroup CEO Pandit said the bank was on a path toward sustained profitability as it sells off risky assets.
As of the open of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132319125 unchanged, the trailing P/E ratio is 16.54 up from Thursday's P/E ratio of 16.48 (year ago it was 23.78) the P/E estimate is 13.45 unchanged from Thursday's P/E estimate of 13.45 (year ago it was 9.91) and the current dividend yield is 2.57 down from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.58 (it was 4.33 a year ago).
Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1404.15 up 5.89 from Wednesday's closing Dow numerator of 1,398.26. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase of 5.89 for Thursday by the divisor you get the increase in Thursday's Dow close of 44.51. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $46.81 up 0.20 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing price of $46.61. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was 41.65 up 0.32 from Wednesday's median closing price of 41.33. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $81.26 -0.30 0.37% 3,971,072 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $17.12 +0.01 0.06% 144,234,618 NYSE.
If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have made $604 ($140,430 - $139,826).
