Post No. 607 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 8/17/10 and an update of the Dow 30 component's SEC filings as of 8/17/10.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Thursday at 9,985.81 down 74.25 or 0.74% from Wednesday's close of 10,060.06. Of the 30 Dow Companies: 2 gained and 28 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing BA $61.32 -0.56 0.92% 4,875,990 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $122.78 -2.49 1.99% 7,739,487 NYSE and percentage-wise was Cisco CSCO $20.7 -0.51 2.4% 53,407,489 NASDAQ-GS.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493, the trailing P/E ratio is 13.57 up from Wednesday's 13.55 (year ago it was 15.40) the P/E estimate is 12.36 unchanged from Wednesday's 12.36 (year ago it was 14.71) and the current dividend yield is 2.79 up from Wednesday's 2.79 (it was 3.01 a year ago). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,319.42 down 9.81 from Wednesday's closing numerator of 1,329.23. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease of 9.81 for Thursday by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in Thursday's Dow of 74.25. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.56 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $43.98 down 0.33 from Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $44.31. The median closing price of Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $39.61. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $79.78 -0.97 1.2% 3,571,237 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $12.47 -0.19 1.5% 137,148,779 NYSE.

If Thursday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $981 ($132,923 - $131,942).

MarketWatch 8/26/10 Thursday 4:25 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell Thursday as a fall in new claims for unemployment benefits offered only slight consolation to a market hammered by a recent spate of largely dismal economic reports. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 9,986, -74.25, -0.74%) shed 74.25 points to 9,985.81, with all but two of its 30 components ending in the red. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,047, -8.11, -0.77%) declined 8.11 points to 1,047.22, with health-care companies and consumer staples weighing the most among its 10 industry groups. Material and industrial firms fared the best. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,119, -22.85, -1.07%) fell 22.85 points to 2,118.69. For every stock on the rise nearly two fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume reached a little over 1 billion shares. Treasury prices rose after solid results from the government's auction of $27 billion in 7-year notes, while the U.S. dollar weakened against half a dozen rivals, with the dollar index (DXY 82.92, -0.35, -0.42%) recently off 0.4% at 82.916. Crude-oil futures rose 84 cents to end at $73.36 a barrel, while gold futures shed $3.60 to $1,237.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Before the opening bell, the government reported applications for jobless benefits declined last week, with the better-than-expected data helping to offset worries that companies are once again cutting workers in a slowing economy. Figures from the Labor Department had claims for first-time unemployment benefits falling by 31,000 to 473,000 in the week ended Aug. 21. The four-week moving average of claims climbed to 486,750 from 483,500 the prior week.
Adding to the bearish case, the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City said manufacturing growth had sputtered in the region, with its index of activity slipping to zero in August from 14 in July. Investors were also on edge ahead of a speech early Friday by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who recently called economic conditions "unusually uncertain." In corporate deal-making, technology giant Dell Inc. (DELL 11.75, -0.04, -0.30%) said data-storage maker 3Par Inc. (PAR 27.78, +1.75, +6.72%) has accepted its sweetened takeover offer, which came after rival Hewlett-Packard Co. made an unsolicited bid. See more on corporate sparring for 3Par.
