Post No. 2,895 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a recent ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and a summary of recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of Sept. 24, 2014.
A read of the print editions of Monday's Barron's & Investor's Business Daily, the combined Sat/Sun issues of each of the Wall Street Journal & Financial Times; & Saturday's New York Times & Atlanta Journal & Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Friday's closing stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 16380.41 up 263.17 or 1.63 from Thursday's close of 16117.24. For the week the Dow was down 163.69 or 0.99% from last Friday's close of 16,544.10. For the year the Dow is down 1.18%. Of the Dow components al l30. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Goldman Sachs and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 3.27%.
WSJ pB1 "Stock leap caps wild week" by Alexandra Scaggs says US stocks capped their wildest week in 3 years on a high note Friday.
IBD pB8 "Stock indexes post solid gains, but market is still in correction" by Paul Whitfield says Friday's action was up in lower vol.
FT p3 "Equities rally on rates shift hopes" by Ralph Atkins, Chris Giles, Vivianne Rodrigues says global equities rallied Fri encouraged by hints that US & UK monetary policy tightening cold by delaying and capping at urbulent week in fin'l markets that saw dramatic swings in bond yields.
NYT pB7 "Market ends volatile week on a high note" & Sat. AJC pA8 "Stocks end week with big gain" by AP say the stock market capped a turbulent week with a big gain Friday, a sign of renewed investor confidence.
As of the open of the market on Monday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page B6 of Saturday's Wall St. Journal is 0.15571590501117. Monday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.06 down from Friday's trailing P/E ratio of 15.06 (last year it was 15.85). Monday's P/E estimate is 14.24 down from Friday's P/E estimate of 14.73 (year ago it was 14.13) and Monday's dividend yield is 2.35 up from Thursday's dividend yield of 2.34 (last year it was 2.14). The Dow's all-time high was 17279.74 on September 19, 2014. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.
Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average numerator is 2550.69 up 40.98 from Thursday's numerator of 2509.71. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator change for today by the divisor (0.15571590501117) you get the change in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $6.42 change in the Dow Index.
The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.02 up $1.36 from Thursday's average closing price of $83.66. The median closing price of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $85.51 (DIS/NKE) up $1.69 from Thursday's median closing price of $83.82 (PG/UNH). The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume was GE.
If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $4,098 ($255,069 - $250,971).
10/17/14 Fri 4:34 MarketWatch by Anora Mahmudova & Sara Sjolin says following steep losses and massive intraday swings over the past five days, the U.S. stock market wrapped up the week on a relative high note, with the key benchmarks registering more than 1% gains on Friday.
Earlier in the week, investors exhibited panicky selling behavior as concerns over global growth, volatility in oil and the dollar, as well as fear of the spread of Ebola, converged. On Friday, stocks got a boost from upbeat earnings reports from heavyweights, such as General Electric. The S&P 500 SPX, +1.29% gained 24 points, or 1.3%, to 1,886.76, led by gains in industrials and health care sectors. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, +1.63% jumped 263.17 points, or 1.6%, to 16,380.41. The Nasdaq Composite COMP, +0.97% rose 41.05 points, or 1%, to 4,258.44.
The main benchmarks were still left nursing modest weekly losses after brutal selloffs earlier in the week. Weekly losses were fourth in a row.The Russell 2000 RUT, -0.35% dipped 4 points, or 0.4% to 1,082.33, underperforming its large-cap counterpart on Friday after relative strength over the week. Indeed, the small-cap index ended the week with a gain of 2.8%.J.C. Parets, founder and president of Eagle Bay Capital, warns not to be fooled by the snapback, asserting that carnage the equity markets experienced isn’t nearly over. “We get the most vicious rallies during market declines,” he cautions in an interview. Thursday’s sharp gains came after a choppy session on Wall Street on Thursday, when the benchmarks fell around 1% at the open. However, they recovered throughout the day, helped by comments from President of the St. Louis Federal Reserve James Bullard, who raised the possibility of extending bond purchases. Bullard isn’t a voting member this year of the rate-setting Federal Open Market Committee. Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren told CNBC on Friday he does not expect the U.S. economy to need another round of quantitative easing, but added that he would not rule out that possibility. Earnings: Several heavyweights reported results ahead of the opening bell. General Electric Co. GE, +2.35% shares rose 2.4% after third-quarter earnings topped market expectations. Defense contractor Honeywell International Inc. HON, +4.25% lifted its low end of its 2014 per-share outlook, after third-quarter earnings beat expectations, sending the shares 4.3% higher.
