3/6/11 Sun/Sat Barron's Plugs McDonald's & IBM Shares due to Dividend Growth

A read of the print editions of Monday's 3/7 issue of Barron's, the Sat/Sun combined issues of Wall St. Journal & Financial Times, and the separate Sun. & Sat. issues of each of New York Times & Atlanta Journal Constitution yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Friday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Friday at 12,169.88 down 88.32 points or 0.72% from Thursday's close of 12,066.8. For the year the Dow is up 5.12%. For the week the Dow was up 103.08 points or 0.84% from last Friday's close of 12,130.45. Of the 30 Dow Jones component companies 4 gained and 26 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage wise was Travelers TRV $59.18 +0.13 0.22% 4,252,906 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was IBM $161.84 -1.64 1% 4,223,212 and percentage-wise was GE $20.41 -0.34 1.64% 48,945,983 NYSE.

WSJ pB1 "Blue chips fall 88.32 with oil over $104" by Jonathan Cheng says a volatile week for the US stock market ended with another jolt. Throughout the week, intermittent worries about Mid. East tensions & surging oil prices sent the Dow swinging between triple-digit gains & losses.

Fin Times p14 "Fin'ls shaken by Citi & Goldman downgrades" by Michael Stothard says the fin'l sector lost ground after the investment ratings on Citigroup & Goldman Sachs were unexpectedly downgraded by one of their rivals in the wider market, equities slid after monthly employment data failed to live up to expectations. Bank of America Merrill Lynch downgraded its recommendation on the 2 banks to neutral from buy, citing expected weakness in their first quarter results.

Sat NYT pB6 "Rising oil prices overshadow drop in the jobless rate" by AP says stocks fell on Fri after another spike in oil prices overshadowed a report that the unemploymnet rate fell to its lowest level in nearly 2 years.

As of the close of the market Friday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. The trailing P/E is 14.79 up from Friday's 14.65 (year ago it was 16.47); the P/E estimate is 12.79 up from Friday's 12.67 (year ago it was 13.21), and the dividend yield is 2.39 up from Friday's 2.47 (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05. GE fell 38 cents, Hewlett-Packard lost 5 9cents, American Express declined 58 cents.

Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,608 down 11.67 from Thursday's closing numerator of 1,619.67. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Friday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $53.60 down $0.39 from Thursday's Dow Jones Industrial Average average closing price of $53.99. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $45.16 (JPM/AXP) down 0.93 from Thursday's median closing price of $45.16. The lowest volume was 3M MMM $92.19 -0.62 0.67% 2,718,519 NYSE and the highest volume was again Bank of America BAC $14.07 -0.20 1.4% 129,549,226 NYSE.

If Friday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $1,167 ($161,967 - $160,800).

MarketWatch Friday 3/4/11 4:27 by Brendan Conway Gibson says U.S. stocks closed Friday's session with steep losses, hemmed in by a jump in oil prices, though a partial recovery late in the session lifted the indexes to slight weekly gains. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA 12,170, -88.32, -0.72%) ended down 88.32 points, or 0.7%, at 12,169.88, led by a 1.8% drop in General Electric Co. (GE 20.38, +0.01, +0.05%) shares. The S&P 500 (SPX 1,321, -9.82, -0.74%) fell 9.82 points, or 0.7%, to 1,321.15, with financials and industrials falling the most. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP 2,785, -14.07, -0.50%) ended down 14.07 points, or 0.5%, to 2,784.67. For the week, the Dow ended up 0.3%, the S&P 500 gained 0.1% and the Nasdaq Composite also edged 0.1% higher.

Wells Fargo, Bank of America & Citigroup received a 27 page proposal from state attorneys general a& fed agencies to force a shakeup in banks' mortgage servicing policies.

WSJ pB8 "CD rates start ticking up" by Jane Kim says Banks including Bank of America, Citigroup, are bumping up rates on longer term CDs.
