Post No. 1,143 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 2, 2011.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,866.62 down 265.87 or 2.19% from Monday's close of 12,132.49. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $97.18 -3.54 3.51% 11,929,287 NYSE and percentage-wise was Pfizer PFE $18.14 -0.87 4.58% 103,309,678 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Tuesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.61 down from Monday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.62 (year ago it was 14.46); today's P/E estimate is 12.57 down from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.56 (year ago it was 12.70), and Tuesday's dividend yield is 2.49 unchanged from Monday's dividend yield of 2.49 (last year it was 2.61). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,567.93 down 35.13 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,603.06. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.26 down 1.27 from Monday's average closing price of $53.43. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.18 (AXP/JPM) down 1.05 from Monday's median closing price of $45.23. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $54.16- 0.45 0.82% 4,575,989 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.49 -0.32 3.26% 171,736,394 NYSE.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,513 ($160,306 - $156,793).

MarketWatch Tuesday 8/2/11 3:36 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell hard Tuesday, prolonging an already lengthy losing streak, with Wall Street on uncertain footing about deficit moves ahead and a likely stall in the recovery. The just-ended battle over hiking the U.S. debt ceiling means the government avoided default, but also rattled investors, with two of the three benchmark indexes poised for their longest losing stretch since October 2008. “This debate has left a cloud of uncertainty over the market in terms of what it means. The good news is we’re not going to default, the bad news is we don’t know what is coming out of Washington. There’s a loss of confidence and a rethinking of the profit outlook going out a few years,” said Nick Kalivas, equities and fixed-income analyst at MF Global. Helping foster such fears, the Commerce Department reported consumers trimmed their spending in June for the first time in almost two years. Extending its longest losing streak into an eighth session, a lower close would mark the longest down stretch for the Dow Jones Industrial Average since an eighth-session bout of declines ending Oct. 10, 2008. At last check the blue-chip index was off 198.21 points, or 1.6%, at 11,934.28. It was off as much as 210 points during the session. Down for a seven session, The S&P 500 Index fell 25.78 points, or 2%, at 1,261.16, with consumer discretionary and industrial companies hardest hit of its 10 industry groups. A down finish would also mark the longest losing stretch for the S&P 500 since October 2008. “Other than October 2008, the S&P 500 did not fall seven sessions in a row in all of the 2000s,” noted Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 59.70 points, or 2.2%, at 2,684.91. For every stock advancing, nearly four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 832 million shares traded as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Just hours before a potential default on the nation’s debt obligations, the Senate on Tuesday approved legislation that would increase the U.S. debt ceiling and reduce planned budget deficits. President Barack Obama signed it into law shortly after. By a 74 to 26 vote, the Senate approved a proposal to increase the $14.3 trillion debt limit by up to $2.4 trillion in two stages, and by the Congressional Budget Office’s tally, reduce deficits by $2.1 trillion over a decade. Following the vote, Fitch Ratings said that with a deal in place to increase the U.S. debt ceiling, any risk of sovereign default — “commensurate with [America’s] ‘AAA’ rating” — remains extremely low.

Fin Times p20 "Defence groups under pressure from Pentagon budget concerns" by Johanna Kassel says US stocks closed slightly lower after a turbulent session that saw the session open with shares sharply higher on the US debt agreement and then tumble after weak manufacturing figures damped sentiment. Defence firms came under pressure on worries that fiscal retrenchment int he wake of the debt deal will hit the defence budget. Boeing fell 2% to 70.33.

NYT pB4 "Relief rally disappears after fresh economic data suggest weakness" by Christne Hauser says hopes were high for a rally in stocks in the wake of Sun's debt limit agreement but the bounce was a thud as the three main indexes jumped then slumped for most of the day & closed lower as the reality of the challenges ahead for the economy set in.

Inv. Bus. Daily pA1 "Action volatile as stocks lose ground" by Paul Whitfield" says stocks lost more ground Mon as volume slipped from Friday's pace. The action was down in volatile trading and the current outlook is the market is still in correction.

USA Today p4B "Markets finished own slightly before vote on debt ceiling" by Bloomberg says stocks fell Mon, sending the S&P 500 index down for a 6th trading day, as slower than forecast growth in manufacturing erased a rally triggered by optimism that lawmakers would raise the nation's debt ceiling and avoid default.

A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. MarketWatch Monday 8/1/11 3:38 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks rebounded from steep losses in the final hour of trading Monday, with investors on uncertain footing before lawmakers vote on an agreement to lift the federal borrowing limit. Still, the Dow remained on track for its longest losing stretch in over a year after data had factory activity near a standstill in July. “The surprisingly disappointing manufacturing report fueled a growing concern that the ‘soft patch’ may be with us for a while,” said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. Wall Street’s decline had the blue-chip index extending losses into a new month, after losing 271 points, or 2.2%, in July, its third consecutive monthly decline. Friday’s finish marked a sixth consecutive down session for the Dow, its longest stretch of losses since early June. If the blue-chip average ends with a loss Monday, it will be the first seven-day loss streak since one ending July 2, 2010. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index declined 7.89 points, or 0.6%, to 1,284.39, with health-care stocks hardest hit among 10 industry groups after Medicare said it would trim payment rates to nursing-home facilities after an unexpected spike in 2011. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 21.17 points, or 0.8%, to 2,735.22. Decliners remained just ahead of advancers on the New York Stock Exchange, where 757 million shares traded as of 3:20 p.m. Lawmakers were expected to vote later in the day on the deal to hike the nation’s borrowing ceiling that would also include more than $2.4 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years. “The investment community is understandably relieved that a deal has apparently been reached, but a few questions hang in the balance,” said Kevin Giddis, fixed-income strategist at Morgan Keegan. The agreement, seen as passing the Democratic-led Senate but facing a rougher road in the GOP-controlled House of Representatives, had investors still fretting about the risk to the U.S. triple-A sovereign debt rating. “Both left-wing Democrats and right-wing Republicans may vote against the measure, suggesting that, if the deal is not passed, it will be hard to find a modification which could get through Congress,” said David Kelly, chief market strategist at J.P. Morgan Funds. Equities turned heels on an opening rally after data illustrated slowing growth in the manufacturing sector in July, with the Institute for Supply Management’s manufacturing gauge falling to a two-year low. Treasury prices gained, pushing the yield on the benchmark 10-year note as low as 2.7155%, the lowest level since November. Read more on bonds. Insurer Allstate Corp. reported less of a second-quarter loss than anticipated, while Humana Inc. hiked its 2011 profit outlook. “Even in a slow-moving economic recovery, corporations have been very successful in building their profitability,” said J.P. Morgan Funds’ Kelly of quarterly results.
