The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,896.44 up 29.82 or 0.25% from Tuesday's close of 11,8666.62. Of the 30 Dow components 10 gained and 20 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Coke KO $68.4 +1.33 1.98% 14,015,254 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was NYSE and percentage-wise was Caterpillar CAT $96.28 -0.90 0.93% 16,885,057 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of Tuesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 13.30 down from Tuesday's trailing P/E ratio of 13.61 (year ago it was 14.42); today's P/E estimate is 12.57 unchanged from yesterday's P/E estimate of 12.57 (year ago it was 12.70), and Wednesday's dividend yield is 2.55 up from Tuesday's dividend yield of 2.49 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $52.40 up 0.14 from Tuesday's average closing price of $52.26. If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $393 ($157,186 - $156,793).

MarketWatch Wednesday 8/3/11 4:11 pm by Laura Mandauro says U.S. stocks closed higher Wednesday, clawing back from deep session lows and ending a losing streak that would have marked the Dow average's worst since the late 1970s. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 29.82 points, or 0.3%, to 11,896.44, its first advance in nine sessions. The S&P 500 rose 6.29 points, or 0.5%, to 1,260.34, its first rise in eight sessions. The Nasdaq Composite rose 23.83 points, or 0.9%, to 2,693.07. Some support from earnings and bargain hunters helped offset a bleak round of economic data. All three indexes are now slightly higher for the year; the Nasdaq had lost yearly advances intraday.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 11,866.62 down 265.87 or 2.19% from Monday's close of 12,132.49. For the year the Dow is up 0.62%. WSJ pC6 "Dow's losing streak hits 8" by Steven Russolillo says worries about the US economy pushed stocks to the longest losing streak in nearly 3 years, sending the S&P index to a '11 closing low. Pfizer was the Dow's biggest decliner, dropping 87 cents as it reported 2Q earnings that were slightly above expectations, but rev fell shy of estimates.

Fin Times p20 "Seventh straight losing session for US shares amid economic worries" by Telis Demos says US stocks fell the most in a year on Tues, their seventh straight losing session as worries about the economy outweighed the resolution of the debt ceiling deal.

NYT pB1 "World markets plunge amid storm of bad news" by Christine Hauser says as the debt limit drama ended in DC, storm clouds thickened in the fin'l markets. The broader US stock market dropped 2.6%, erasing all of its gains for the year. That capped a string of declines over 7 straight days, its longest losing streak since Oct '08.

USA Today p4B "Stocks plummet as debt deal fails to trump economic woes" by Bloomberg says stocks tumbled Tues, easing the '11 gain for the S&P, after an unexpected decline in consumer spending increased concern that growth int he world's largest economy is faltering. United Technologies fell $3.41 and Caterpillar dropped $3.54 pacing losses in firms most dependent on economic growth. The Dow Jones transportation average, often a proxy for the economy, slumped 3.7%.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,567.93 down 35.13 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,603.06. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $44.18 (AXP/JPM) down 1.05 from Monday's median closing price of $45.23. The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $54.16- 0.45 0.82% 4,575,989 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $9.49 -0.32 3.26% 171,736,394 NYSE.

MarketWatch Tuesday 8/2/11 3:36 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell hard Tuesday, prolonging an already lengthy losing streak, with Wall Street on uncertain footing about deficit moves ahead and a likely stall in the recovery. The just-ended battle over hiking the U.S. debt ceiling means the government avoided default, but also rattled investors, with two of the three benchmark indexes poised for their longest losing stretch since October 2008. “This debate has left a cloud of uncertainty over the market in terms of what it means. The good news is we’re not going to default, the bad news is we don’t know what is coming out of Washington. There’s a loss of confidence and a rethinking of the profit outlook going out a few years,” said Nick Kalivas, equities and fixed-income analyst at MF Global. Helping foster such fears, the Commerce Department reported consumers trimmed their spending in June for the first time in almost two years. Extending its longest losing streak into an eighth session, a lower close would mark the longest down stretch for the Dow Jones Industrial Average since an eighth-session bout of declines ending Oct. 10, 2008. At last check the blue-chip index was off 198.21 points, or 1.6%, at 11,934.28. It was off as much as 210 points during the session. Down for a seven session, The S&P 500 Index fell 25.78 points, or 2%, at 1,261.16, with consumer discretionary and industrial companies hardest hit of its 10 industry groups. A down finish would also mark the longest losing stretch for the S&P 500 since October 2008. “Other than October 2008, the S&P 500 did not fall seven sessions in a row in all of the 2000s,” noted Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. The Nasdaq Composite Index declined 59.70 points, or 2.2%, at 2,684.91. For every stock advancing, nearly four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 832 million shares traded as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern. Just hours before a potential default on the nation’s debt obligations, the Senate on Tuesday approved legislation that would increase the U.S. debt ceiling and reduce planned budget deficits. President Barack Obama signed it into law shortly after. By a 74 to 26 vote, the Senate approved a proposal to increase the $14.3 trillion debt limit by up to $2.4 trillion in two stages, and by the Congressional Budget Office’s tally, reduce deficits by $2.1 trillion over a decade. Following the vote, Fitch Ratings said that with a deal in place to increase the U.S. debt ceiling, any risk of sovereign default — “commensurate with [America’s] ‘AAA’ rating” — remains extremely low.
