Post No. 1,227 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of August 29, 2011.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,124.84 down 283.82 or 2.49% from Tuesday's close of 11,408.66%. Of the 30 Dow components only Hewlett-Packard gained and 29 declined. The only and thereforebiggest gainer dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard HPQ $23.98 +1.51 6.72% 88,111,530 NYSE. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $79.36 -4.30 5.14% 16,336,391 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $6.38 -0.52 7.54% 374,295,210 NYSE.

As of the open of the market Wednesday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.73 up from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.72 (year ago it was 14.52); today's P/E estimate is 11.52 unchanged from Tuesday's P/E estimate of 11.52 (year ago it was 12.76), and today's dividend yield is 2.76 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.70 (last year it was 2.62). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,469.92 down 37.47 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,507.42. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $49.00 down 1.25 from Tuesday's average closing price of $50.25. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $41.04 (AXP/HD) down $1.04 from Tuesday's median closing price of $42.08. The lowest volume was 3M MMM
$76.34 -2.87 3.62% 4,799,395 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.38 -0.52 7.54% 374,295,210 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $3,758 ($150,750 - $146,992).

MarketWatch Wednesday 9/21/11 4:03 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell sharply Wednesday after the Federal Reserve again moved to lower interest rates on consumer loans and noted “significant downside risks” to the economic forecast. Wall Street’s negative reaction came as analysts noted divisions within the central bank, and questioned how much relief its latest move would bring. “There is so much liquidity in the economy that additional liquidity may not do much for the economy,” noted Sung Won Sohn, a professor of economics at California State University, Channel Islands.
Down about 20 points before the Fed statement, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was lately off 160 points at 11,248.66, with 28 of its 30 components losing ground. The S&P 500 shed 21.52 points to 1,180.57, with technology the best performer and natural resources the worst among the benchmark’s 10 industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 19.98 points to 2,570.26. For every stock rising, four fell on the New York Stock Exchange, where 824 million shares traded as of 3:35 p.m. Eastern. Fed policy makers said they would replace short-term debt in the central bank’s portfolio with longer-term Treasury bonds in a bid to further cut borrowing costs. The move, dubbed “Operation Twist” by economists after a like move by the central bank in 1961, bypasses the money creation that fueled a Republican outcry last year. As at the last Federal Open Market Committee meeting in August, three Fed members dissented. “The latest stimulus measures by the central bank was limited. There is a deep division within the FOMC,” Sohn wrote. “The key point is the Fed addressed purchases of mortgage-backed securities to help reinvigorate residential real estate,” said Art Hogan, head of product strategy, equity research at Lazard Capital Markets. Coal producers and railways slid after Alpha Natural Resources Inc. reduced its shipment outlook for the year, while technology companies proved the session’s bright spot a day after quarterly results from software makers Oracle Corp. and Adobe Systems Inc. lifted sentiment. Blue-chip decliners included Bank of America Corp. after Moody’s Investors Service downgraded its debt, along with that of Citigroup Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. Hewlett-Packard Co. rose the most among the Dow 30, with shares of the PC and printing giant rising after media reports that the company’s board planned to consider ousting Chief Executive Leo Apotheker, citing sources familiar with the matter. A day ahead of the Fed’s decision, Republican leaders in Congress urged the central bank to refrain from any more action to “avoid further harm” to the U.S. economy, with the move an unusual one given the Fed is supposed to conduct monetary policy without political pressure. “I would be shocked that any further action by the Fed is going to do further harm to an economy. We are dangerously close to the potential ‘checkmate’ of the U.S. economy’s hope for near-term growth and everything should be on the table,” wrote Keven Giddis, a fixed-income analyst at Morgan Keegan. “Greater political influence on the conduct of monetary policy is going to be very worrisome to investors. To comment so publicly is to blur the lines between acceptable and unacceptable. Elections have consequences and if a given party is unhappy with the Federal Reserve, the Post Office or even the DMW, then we suggest they win an election and change things that way,” offered Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC. Stock indexes briefly added to what had been modest gains after an industry report illustrated a surge in existing-home sales, with the National Association of Realtors reporting a 7.7% rise in August. Read more on above-consensus increase in August home sales. Also Wednesday, packaged-food maker General Mills Inc. reported adjusted results for the first quarter that beat estimates and reaffirmed its full-year adjusted earnings outlook. On the New York Mercantile Exchange, the December gold futures contract fell a dollar to end at $1,808.10 an ounce, while crude for November delivery fell $1.00 to $85.92 a barrel. U.S. stocks ended mostly lower on Tuesday on worries of little progress in Greece’s effort to ensure it would get more financial aid.
