Post No. 1,240 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and Dow 30 components' SEC filings in each case as of September 23, 2011.

A read of the print editions of Thursday's The Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data.

Dow Jones Industrial AverageThe Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 11,010.90 down 179.79 or 1.61 from Tuesday's close of 11,190.69. For the year the Dow is down 4.9%. Of the 30 Dow components all 30 declined. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Caterpillar CAT $75.08 -2.59 3.33% 9,318,329 NYSE and percentage-wise was Bank of America BAC $6.16 -0.32 4.94% 216,257,144 NYSE.

WSJ pC6 "Rally in stocks screeches to a halt" by Jonathan Cheng says US stocks snapped a 3 day winning streak sinking as a drop in commodities prices added to concerns about policy market abilities to contain Europe's debt crisis. All 30 Dow firms and all 10 sectors of the S&P finished in the red. Materials stocks fared worst as Alcoa fell 52 cents a share.

Fin Times p26 "Jabil Circuit forges ahead 8.4% but wider market gains evaporate" by Ajay Makan says semiconductor maker Jabil jumped while the wider Wall St rally evaporated as hopes of a European deal on sovereign debt hit a snag with the European Comm reportedly wading into the argument about whether private banks should take a bigger hit on Greek bonds.

USA Today p4B "Markets can't get away from Europe worries, end day down" by Bloomberg says stocks declined Wed halting a 3 session rally, amid growing concern that European leaders are divided about how to handle Greece's debt crisis.

NYT pB8 "Worry on Euro debt crisis ends 3 days of gains" by AP says a 3 day winning streak int he stock market ended Wed as investors worried about Europe's ability to contain its debt crisis.

As of the open of the market Thursday, the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C4 of today's Wall St. Journal is 0.132129493. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 12.28 down from yesterday's trailing P/E ratio of 12.48 (year ago it was 14.62); today's P/E estimate is 10.83 unchanged from Wednesday's P/E estimate of 10.83 (year ago it was 12.84), and today's dividend yield is 2.79 up from yesterday's dividend yield of 2.75 (last year it was 2.60). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,454.86 down 23.52 from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,478.62. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.132129493) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A $1 change in the price of any DJIA stock = a 7.57 change in the average.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $48.50 down $1.21 from Tuesday's average closing price of $49.29. The median closing price of Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $40.04 (AXP/HD). The lowest volume was Travelers TRV $48.17 -1.07 2.17% 3,527,542 NYSE and the highest volume again was Bank of America BAC $6.16 -0.32 4.94% 216,257,144 NYSE.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs) and sold at the close you would have lost $2,352 ($147,862 - $145,486).

MarketWatch Wednesday 9/28/11 4:14 pm by Claudia Assis says U.S. equities settled sharply lower Wednesday, turning mild declines into a full-blown selloff as investors worried euro-zone leaders diverged on their views to solve the region's sovereign-debt crisis. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 179.79 points, or 1.6%, to end at 11,010.90, while the S&P 500 retreated 24.32 points, or 2.1%, to 1,151.06. The Nasdaq Composite % declined 55.25, or 2.2%, to 2,491.58. Wednesday's losses snapped a three-day winning stretch for stocks.
