Post No. 2,013 The following is brougt to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 1/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 1/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution and Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,712.13 up 62.43 or 0.46% from Friday's close of 13,649.7. For the year the Dow is up 4.64%. Of the Dow components 21 gained and 9 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Travelers up $1.57 and percentage-wise was UnitedHealth up 2.66%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise was Boeing down 88 cents and percentage-wise was Coke down 1.16%.

WSJ pC4 "Earnings thrust stocks higher" by Matt Jarzemsky says better than expected reports from Travelers and DuPont helped propel blue chips to a 5 year high.  Atlantic Tele-Network is charted under Good News says AT&T agreed to buy its retail US wireless operations.

NYT pB10 "Another day of gains after solid earnings" by AP says strong earnings reports from big US firms helped push the Dow to its 8th gain in 9 sessions on Thurs.

FT p22 "Google set to make gains as it reports forecast beating earnings" by Arash massoudi says US equities shoof off a sluggish start to the short trading week and reached a 5 year high as ivnestors weighed mixed results from a number of large US firms.

IBD pB4 "Stocks deliver nice finish; distribution count drops" by Victor Reklaitis says stocks dispalyed positive action by ralling into the close Tues starting a holdiay shortened week with moderate gains.  Tuesday's action saw rallies into the close as volume falls and the current outlook is a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of  Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.17 up from yesterday's  trailing P/E ratio of 15.12  (year ago it was 13.68); today's P/E estimate is 12.28 unchanged from Tuesday' s P/E estimate of 12.28 (year ago it was 12.05) and today's dividend yield is 2.54 down from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.61   (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,785.54 up 8.14 from Friday's closing numerator of 1,777.41. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator increase for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the increase in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $59.52 up 27 cents from Friday's average of $59.25. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $54.36 (DIS/UNH) up 91 cents from Friday's median closing price of $53.45. The lowest volume was 3M and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have made $814 ($178,554 - $177,741).

Tuesday MarketWatch 1/22/13 4:07 pm by Kate Gibson says US stocks gained Tuesday, with the S&P 500 index posting its longest win streak in nearly six weeks, as Wall Street embraced quarterly results from corporations including insurer and Dow component Travelers Cos. Inc. TRV+2.15% . "We're right in the middle of the thick of earnings season, and materials actually came out and beat expectations, which could mean the economy is stronger than we realized," said Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at the Schwab Center for Financial Research. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA+0.46% added 62.43 points, or 0.5%, to 13,712.13. The S&P 500 index SPX+0.44%climbed 6.58 points, or 0.4%, to 1,492.56. The Nasdaq Composite COMP+0.27%advanced 8.47 points, or 0.3%, to 3,143.17.
