1/9/13 Wed am Alcoa Profits Up on Down Rev

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 1,990 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization as of 1/1/13 and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings as of 1/1/13.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga.- carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Tuesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrail Average:    The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Tuesday at 13,328.85 down 55.44 or 0.41% from Monday's close of 13,384.29.  For the year the Dow is up 1.71%.  Of the Dow components 14 gained, Alcoa was unchanged and 15 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Exxon up 55 cents and percentage-wise was Hewlett-Packard up 1.45%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Verizon down $1.59 or 3.56%.

WSJ pC4 "Blue Chips pull back a 2nd day" by Matt Jarzemsky says stock weighted down by telecomms & Ind'l satres fell.  Alcoa swung to a 4Q profit as its benefited from cost cutting though rev edged down as alum prices remained low.  Boeing is charted under Bad News due to new scrutiny of the Dreamliner resultng from the recent fire.

NYT pB8 "Shares fall as investors remain wary" by Retuers says stocks fel Tues retreating further from last week's rally after the fed budget deal as firms start to report quarterly results.  AT&T fell 1.7% after it said it sold more than 10 mil smartphones in the quarter.

IBD pB4 "Market sees distribution as earnings season starts" by Vicgtor Reklaitis says stocks fell Tues but the main idnexes endured only moderate losses as Tuesday's action saw moderate losses in higher volume with the current outlook being a confirmed uptrend.  Boeing dropped 3% due to 787 problems.

FT p24 "Yum goes sour after warnng of congtroversy with Chian oeprations" by Anora Mahmudova says Alcoa reported slightly better thane xpected profits on higher rev and raised its '13 global alum demand estimate.

AJC pA11 "Edge about earnings season" by AP says US stocks were lower Tues as traders awaited the start of the corp earnings season.

As of the open of the market on Wednesday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Wednesday's trailing P/E ratio is 14.80 up  from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 14.43 (year ago it was 13.48); today's P/E estimate is 12.22 unchanged from Tuesday' s opening P/E estimate of 12.22 (year ago it was 11.92) and today's dividend yield is 2.58 down from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.63   (last year it was 2.57). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,735.63 down 7.27 from Monday's closing numerator of 1,742.85. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $57.85 down 24 cents from Monday's average of $58.09. The median closing price of Tuesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $51.08 (DIS/UNH) down 44 cents from Monday's median closing price of $51.52. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Tuesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $727 ($174,285 - $173,563).

Tuesday 1/8/13 MarketWatch 4:41 pm by Kate Gibson says U.S. stocks fell for a second session Tuesday as investors braced for quarterly earnings after a rally that took the S&P 500 to multiyear highs.“The outlooks are going to be fairly cautious,” Andrew Fitzpatrick, director of investments at Hinsdale Associates, said of anticipated first-quarter guidance from corporations set to release fourth-quarter results. “Expectations are lower, which leads me to think we have a little upside here.” As 2013 gets under way, Jack Hough counts down the investment lessons of 2012. After Tuesday’s close, aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. AA0.00% reported fourth-quarter results, with its release signaling the unofficial start of the earnings season. But the Dow component is generally not a reliable predictor of earnings, with the 22 S&P 500 companies that have already reported fourth-quarter earnings a better indicator. Sixty-four percent of those companies, which ended the quarter in November vs. Alcoa’s December quarterly finish, beat earnings expectations, but 73% lowered their first-quarter outlooks, according to Nick Raich, director of research with Key Private Bank in Cleveland.“That’s the better bellwether than Alcoa — a majority are going to beat [fourth-quarter estimates] and a majority are going to lower” first-quarter guidance, Raich said of the companies that have already reported, which include Nike Inc. NKE-1.06%, Costco Wholesale Corp. COST-0.19% and FedEx Corp. FDX+0.41%. Some on Wall Street believe that corporate earnings will boost the stock market, while others are worried about revenue growth, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. And Jack Hough from Barron’s has an interesting piece on four investment lessons from 2012. On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA-0.41% fell 55.44 points, or 0.4%, to 13,328.85, with 15 of its 30 components in the red. Losses were led by Boeing Co. BA-2.63%, down 2.6% after BB&T Capital Markets downgraded its rating on the aerospace manufacturer to hold from buy. Boeing suffered another setback related to its 787 Dreamliner jet aircraft Tuesday when a fuel leak was reported on an outbound Japan Airlines flight at Boston’s Logan International Airport. Alcoa shares ended unchanged ahead of the aluminum producer’s results. The S&P 500 index SPX-0.32% declined 4.74 points, or 0.3%, to 1,457.15, with telecommunications leading the slide and materials performing best among its 10 major industry groups. The Nasdaq Composite COMP-0.23% lost 7.01 points, or 0.2%, to 3,091.81. Studies show that stocks bought by insiders tend to beat the market. MarketWatch's Laura Mandaro looks at five stocks that insiders are confident will rise.More than 691 million shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Composite volume topped 3.5 billion.Sears Holding Corp. SHLD-6.43% shares fell 6.4% as investors reacted to word that Lou D’Ambrosio is stepping down as the retailer’s chief executive and that hedge-fund manager and Chairman Edward Lampert would take over in the post, starting Feb. 2. In economic news, the National Federation of Independent Business said its small-business-optimism index for December edged higher, but it was still the second-worst reading since March 2010. Separately, the Federal Reserve reported U.S. consumers raised their debt in November to $16.1 billion, expanding credit at an annual rate of 7%. Led by student and car loans, credit grew 6.2%, or by $14.2 billion, in October.

Alcoa
Alcoa kicks off earnings season with a profit.
Last week equities jumped the most in 13 months as lawmakers approved a measure to averts steep spending reductions and tax hikes called the fiscal cliff, pushing off for a month or two a debate over raising the debt limit. “We’re having a little bit of consolidation and pullback from recent highs. For now, it’s going to be about earnings, the politics will come back in February,” said Fitzpatrick at Hinsdale Associates.Fred Dickson, chief investment strategist at Davidson Cos., said: “With what we believe will be a so-so earnings season immediately ahead and the debt ceiling debate looming next month, we now see the stock market running into occasional pullbacks or periods of consolidation during the next six to eight weeks.”
