2/14/13 Thurs. am Cisco's Earnings Beat Forecast

http://www.dowjonesmonitor.com/

Post No. 2,046 The following is brought to you by Intellivest Securities Research, Inc. Toward the end of this Blog is a list of the Dow 30 current CEOs, and a ranking of the Dow 30 components by market capitalization and recent Dow 30 components' SEC filings.

A read of the print editions of Wednesday's Wall St. Journal, Financial Times, Investor's Business Daily, New York Times, USA Today, Atlanta Journal Constitution & Daily Report (Ga. - carries Bloomberg) yielded the following stories about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 component companies and the Dow with stories about the Dow aggregated first and then items about Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 companies presented alphabetically, followed by a separate table of Dow component's symbol and Wednesday's stock prices and related data in alphabetical order.

Dow Jones Industrial Average:  The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 13,982.91  down 35.79 or 0.26% from Tuesday's close of 14,018.7. For the year the Dow is up 6.71%. Of the Dow components 14 gained and 16 declined. The biggest gainer dollar-wise was Procter & Gamble up 58 cents and percentage-wise was GE up 3.59%. The biggest decliner dollar-wise and percentage-wise was Boeing down $1.21 or 1.59%.

WSJ pC4 "Big Mac attack crimps investor risk appetite" by Matt Jarzemsky, Chris Dieterich says McDoanld's decline helped lead the Dow lower, while strength in ind'l firms like GE pushed the S&P to another multiyear high.  GE was the best performing Dow stock rising 81 cents after agreeing to sell its stake in NBCUniversal.  Boeing also hurt the Dow by falling 72 cents.  McDonald's & other fast food stocks were pressued by Obama's call for an increase in the minimum wage.

NYT pB4 "Decline in McDonald's sends Dow lower; S&P and Nasdaq rise" by AP says the sotck market lacked direction Wed as a slump in McDonald's stock pulled the Dow below 14000 while other major market indexes were marginally higher  McDonald's fell due to concerns that Americans were spending less on eating out after a rise in Social Security taxes at the start of the year.  Investors sent GE and Comcast higher after GE agreed to sell its state in NBCUniversal to Comcast for $16.7 bil.

FT p22 "Comcast gets boost from deal to buy GE's NBCUniversal stake" by Anora Mahmudova says GE's share rose 3.9% after Jeff Immelt, CEO, said GE would use the cash from the sale to Comcasat to increase return to shareholders and invest in its ind'l business.

AJC pA15 "McDonald's weighs on Dow" by AP says the Dow dropped below its highest level of the year as McDoanld's pulled the Dow lower.

IBD pB2 "Nasdaq lifts 0.3% higher, but IBD 50 rallies 0.5%" by David Saito-Chung says stocks moved tentatively Wed and the major indexes finished mixed, as a few benchmarks appeared to have difficulty rallying past certain psychological price levels.  Wednesday's action was mixed, flat action in mixed volume while the current outlook is still a confirmed uptrend.

As of the open of the market on Thursday the current divisor for the Dow Jones Industrial Average found at page C5 of Thursday's Wall St. Journal is 0.130216081. Thursday's trailing P/E ratio is 15.38 up from yesterday's opening trailing P/E ratio of 15.31 (year ago it was 14.26); today's P/E estimate is 12.54 unchanged from Wednesday' s P/E estimate of 12.54 (year ago it was 12.26) and today's opening dividend yield is 2.48 up from yesterday's opening dividend yield of 2.47 (last year it was 2.53). The Dow's all-time high was 14,164.53 on Oct. 9, 2007. The 12 year low close for the Dow was on March 9, 2009 when it fell to 6,547.05.

Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average closing numerator was 1,820.80 down 4.86    from Tuesday's closing numerator of 1,825.46. This is the sum of all 30 closing prices. A short cut to the Dow numerator is to multiply the closing Dow by the Divisor. Now, if you divide the Dow numerator  decrease for today by the divisor (0.130216081) you get the decrease in today's Dow. A dollar increase or decrease in a Dow stock results in a $7.68 change in the Dow Index.

The average closing price (the closing numerator divided by 30) of   Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $60.69 down 16 cents from yesterday's average of $60.85. The median closing price of  Wednesday's Dow Jones Industrial Average was $56.10 (DIS/UNH) up 12 cents from yesterday's median closing price of $55.98. The lowest volume was Travelers and the highest volume again was Bank of America.

If Wednesday morning before the market opened you had purchased 100 shares of each of the Dow Jones Industrial Average 30 shares (assuming you could buy fractional shares and assuming no transaction costs or dividends) and sold at the close you would have lost $486 ($182,546- $182,080 ).

MarketWatch Wednesday 2/13/13 4:39  by Wallace Witkowski & Polya Lesova says U.S. stocks closed fractionally higher Wednesday, while blue chips declined, as positive market momentum mixed with investor anticipation of an overdue correction. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA -0.26% fell 35.79 points, or 0.3%, to close at 13,982.81, below its five-year closing high of 14,018.70 on Tuesday. Shares of fast-food giant McDonald’s Corp.MCD -1.16% were a significant drag on the price-weighted index. Shares dropped 1.2% to $94.00. While there was some speculation that a call from President Barack Obama to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour from $7.25 weighed on McDonald’s shares, analysts generally dismissed it as being a factor.
General Electric Co. GE +3.59% was the biggest gainer on the Dow, with shares up 3.6% to $23.39, following an announcement it would sell the rest of its stake in NBCUniversal for $16.7 billion to Comcast Corp. CMCSA +2.98% . Comcast, which closed up 3%, and GE were among the top gainers in the S&P 500. Following a 6% run-up in markets in January, stocks over the past week have traded mostly sideways, as investors anticipate some sort of correction. The intraday high-low spread on the Dow over the previous 13 trading days is the tightest it has been in 25 years, according to Bespoke Investment Group. Over the past 13 days, the difference between the Dow’s intraday high and low has been 1.35%, the lowest spread since December 1986, Bespoke said. The spread on the Dow Wednesday was 0.6%. WSJ's Paul Vigna reports traders have a worrisome eye on the horizon as severe budget cuts scheduled for March 1 loom. The investors who are most looking for a pullback are likely the ones who missed out on the December-January rally following a surprisingly positive earnings season, said Brian Belski, chief investment strategist at BMO Capital Markets. “It’s really important to say that people looking for a pullback are the ones who missed the move [up] in the first place,” Belski said. “It’s increasingly dangerous to be diagnosing short-term market moves.”
The S&P 500 indexSPX +0.06% , which fluctuated between slight gains and losses during the session, finished up 0.90 point, or less than 0.1%, to 1,520.33. The index touched an earlier intraday high of 1,524.69, with financials and telecom stocks the biggest losers and industrials and materials the leading gainers among the 10 major industry groups. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite IndexCOMP +0.33% , the strongest index on the day, gained 10.38 points, or 0.3%, to close at 3,196.88. The Nasdaq index touched an intraday high 3,205.52 earlier. Whether market momentum will continue or result in a selloff is hard to predict. Much of the smart money has boosted long positions into equities lately, according to a recent report from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.
“You’re seeing lots of macro hedge funds more allocated toward stocks,” said Bill Stone, chief investment strategist at PNC Asset Management Group. While investors who missed out on the rally may be the ones hoping for a pullback, the fact that a pullback hasn’t happened in a while is difficult to ignore. According to Stone, the broader stock market has gone 60 trading days without a 5% pullback, and 342 trading days without a 10% pullback. That’s compared with an average 49 trading days for a 5% pullback, and 161 trading days for a 10% pullback, using data going back to the 1920s, Stone said. Along those lines, not only did Goldman Sachs downgrade its short-term outlook on stocks earlier in the week but UBS is saying that stocks are overbought. Advancing stocks outpaced decliners about 18 to 12 on the NYSE, and by 13 to 10 on the Nasdaq. Composite volume for NYSE-listed stocks topped 3.3 billion shares, and 1.8 billion shares for Nasdaq-listed stocks. Before the opening bell, data showed that U.S. retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in January, which was broadly in line with expectations. The data indicated that a tax increase at the beginning of the year has started to affect consumers. In Washington, President Barack Obama delivered the State of the Union address on Tuesday evening. The president called on lawmakers to come together and end the “manufactured” crisis over the federal budget deficit, while also urging Congress to raise the minimum wage to $9 an hour from the current $7.25 rate. In other corporate news, Deere & Co. DE -3.50% said fiscal-first-quarter earnings rose to $1.65 a share from $1.30 a year earlier. The company’s shares, however, dropped 3.3%.In the bond market, yields on 10-year Treasury notes 10_YEAR -0.05% rose 5 basis points to 2.03%, following a $24 billion auction of 10-year notes at a yield of 2.046%.
